youngsters have got their stockings ready and
are counting the hours that are to pass before
they can haye the pleasure of hanOing them up
for the expected visit of "old Kris." The good

IloannitE Ocetutassure.—A painfully distressing
occurrence transpired near Altoona, on Thurs

a man named William Cochrane and two of his
children. The house in which the family lived
caught fire, and during the night Mrs. C. was
aroused by the smoke. Jumping out of bed

where the fire originated, when the flames rush

to secure her babe, and handed it out through
the window to the father, who had by this time

the reflection that although absent they are not

di,ir e to wend articles to their friends in camp,
that all boxes destined for the soldiers must be
of strong material, convenient for handling and
i,i.curely fastened. It is moreover absolutely
novs,,ary for the name of the soldier, the num

his company and regiment, and the loca

'balking hilt upon the box. The charges for
Iran:porting packages to soldiers must be paid

CHRISTMAS IN THE GERMAN lATRHERAN CHURCH.
—Our German friends of the Second street Lu
theran church, are making extensive prepara
tions for the Christmas festivities. They have
handsomely decorated the Church with spruce
and holly, and prepared a beautiful "Christmas
tree," which is filled with appropriate sweetmeats
and other articles, intended, we believe, as pres
ents to the Sunday School scholars. The Church
will be open to the inspection of the public from
one to five o'clock on Christmas afternoon, and
again at six o'clock in the evening, When the
Christmas tree will be beautifully illuminated
with wax tapers, in the good old Genmin style,
and the presents given to the children', The
occasion promises to be an interesting ohe, and
will no doubt attract a large number of Visitors.
PRESENTATION or. COLORS co COL. MURRAY'S
Recumorr.—The ceremony of presenting one of
the State flags to the Eighty-fourth Eegiment
Pennsylvania Volunteers, Col. Wm. Murray,
took place in the rear of the Capitol at five o'-
clock last Saturday afternoon. The flag was
presented by higexpellancy Goven:tor 7 Curtin in
one of his usual happy speeches, and was re
ceived on behalf of the regiment by Col. ltiur-•
ray, who assured the Governor that whatever
the fate of the regiment may be in the future,
it will endeavor by good conduct and a strict
discharge of duty, to•make such a record as will.
bring no dishonor on the Stars and Stripes,
which it goes to defend—or the proud old Com
monwealth of Pennsylvarda, whose sons and cit
izens they deem it an honor to call themselves.
Both of the speeches were received with a hear
ty applause, and the cheers given at the termi
nation of the ceremonies were lively and en
thusiastic. The regiment expects to move Dix
ieward to-morrow morning.
How To Mims a Cultism's Tale.—The pret
ty Christmas trees aregradually superseding the
old German custom of filling the stockings ; and
as some may like to obtain an exact idea of the
modus operandi, we will give them a simple
method of preparing one for the children. The
tree itself can doubtless be purchased in the
Square to-morrow for a dime, unless one of un
usual size is required ; and care should be taken
to select one that branches out finely, so as to
give full effect to the lights and decorations.
The lights are furnished by small wax candles,
which can be bought by the dozen for a trifle, and
'are easily attached to the tree. Some people cov
erthem with colored paper, like Chinese lanterns,
and they look very pretty in this way ; but it
is considerable trouble, and the paper is apt to
take fire.
After the lights are properly, arranged there
is nothing to do but properly dispose of the
gifts, which should be all ready and labelled
with the names of those for whom they are in
tended. The larger and heavier articles must
be ranged round the base of the tree ; the small
toys, confectionery, and light presents attached
to the branches and main stem by narrow blue
or rose colored ribbon, of which a piece that
costa about twenty-five cents will be required.
When these are tastefully disposed of, some lit
tle ribbon streamers, sprigs of artificial flowers,
and lady apples may be sprinkled here and
there wherever they will do the most to render
more brilliant the general effect. The candles
of course must not be lighted until the trim
ming of the tree is completed and it is ready for
exhibition to the delighted throng of children,
to whom it will give a'glimpee of fairy-land.
Cuarsmus Passarrs.—Ladies' and gentlemen
breastpins, fob and neck chains, armlets, and a
general assortment of articles suitable for
Christmas presents, can be had at "M'Calla's, 38
Market street.
