A GOOD IDEA.—It has been suggested that a
s be placed in some public place in our city,
receive the contributions of those who may
ire to do something to alleviate the condi
n and render wore comfortable our sick and
:bled soldiers , A very good idea, and we
Pelt will be carried out. Every patriotic
en will put something in it, if it should
1y be a half dime. It is for a holy purpose,
will provi the best investment ever made.

HORSE AI)N BUGGY Sromas.—Three soldiers,

ggy of A T. 'Wester, at Williamsport, Md.,
the purpose of visiting Hagerstown, Md.,
,rnisiug to return the same evening. This
'raise. however, they forgot to keep ; and as
ey hare not yet returned the presumption is
at they have disposed of the horse and wagon,
.propriated the proceeds, and made off to parts
known. A full description of the stolen

CHRIMAS is Cowl:al.—One day more and
istmas will be here. The store windows of
merchants give us the assurance that they
prepared to accommodate all in their line
business, and give notice to that effect in the
vertising columns of the TELEGRAPH.. The
ungsters have got their stockings ready and
counting the hours that are to pass before
ey , can have the pleasure of hatOrtg them up
the expected visit of "old Kris." The good
,usewives are looking up the tin pattern for
e "fancy" cakes ; the chestnut bag is in
:dog to be untied ; and the tnrkeys and
ckens scarcely make a gobble or cackle, so
ll are they being supplied with corn and care
' ly housed at night.
PROF. rein To-Hamm—Our readers, by no
•ans, should forget the lecture of Prof. Ama
liPCoy, at the Fourth Street Bethel, this
ening. The Subject--"An Historical Vindi
thu of Temperance Societies"—is one that
, thes the interest of all classes of society,
d in the hands of the eloquent Professor, it
.not fail to be highly attractive. It Is said
be replete with humorous allusions, witty
eedotes, affecting incidents, and powerful ar
,ment. The interest excited in this city by
.e Professor's previous lecture "on the London
and the rebellion" was greater, perhaps,
an that occasioned by any other orator for a
, tuber of years, and those who had the good
tune to hear him on that subject, will un
,slatedly be present to-night.
A 3 I6IIICAN WaTann.—Now is the time for
~ .ericans to support American workmen, by
~rchasing, a watch manufactured by the Ameri

t 01111.IBLI Ocormunica.—A painfully distressing
urrence transpired near Altoona, on Thum
' y night, resulting in the death of the wife of
man named William Cochrane and two of his
Ilren. The bans,. in which the family lived
glut fire, and during the night Mrs. 0. was
'used by the smoke. Jumping out of bed
• opened a door leading to an old kitchen,
ere the fire originatol, when the flames rush
in, filling the apArtment and rendering escape
po. ale. Mrs. Cochrane, however, contrived
secure her babe, and handed it out through
e window to the father, who had by this time
ached the open air, but the heroic mother
.erself was 'malls to escape, and was burned
death, while two of her children suffered a
fate. The fire caught from an ash barrel
, n the old kitchen before referred to, and spread
rapidly that eatsrything in the house was
consumed.
Catusrme.s Gum, sox SoLoorts.—During the
• tter part of last week the officers of the Hope
toad Adams' express companies in this city were
unusually busy shipping boxes and packages
containing presents for the soldiers. These
l oxes and packages were of all shapes and sizes,
and the contents were as varied as their GI:A
-.ll'llld appearance. They all contained some
thia'; useful or dainty to contribute to the sol
dier's comfort, and to gladden their hearts with
the refection that although absent they are not
f orgotten at this festive season. In this connec
tion We would state by way of hint to those who
desire to tend articles to their friends in camp,
that all boxes destined for the soldiers must be
trnrig material, convenient for handling and
fastened. It is moreover absolutely

were heard before Justice Seeder, and the par

—Our German friends of the Second street Lu
theran church, are making extensive prepara
tions for the Christmas festivities. They have
handsomely decorated the Church with spruce
and holly, and prepared a beautiful "Christmas
tree," which is filled with appropriate sweetmeats
and other articles, intended, we believe,"as pres
ents to the Sunday School scholars. The Church
will be open to the inspection of the public from
one to five o'clock on Christmas afternoon, and
again at six o'clock in the evening, when the
Christmas tree will be beautifully illuminated
with wax tapers, in the good old German style,
and the presents given.to the children. The
occasion promises to be an interesting one, and
will no doubt attract a large number of visitors.

PRESENTAZION 07 COLORS TO OM MURRAY'S
REGIME:XT.—The ceremony of presenting one of
the State flags to the Eighty-fourth Regiment
Pennsylvania Volunteers, Col. Wm. Murray,
took place in the rear of the Capitol at Ave o'-
clock last Saturday afternoon. The flag was
presented by his excellency Governor Curtin in
one of his usual happy speeches, and was re
ceived on behalf of the regiment by Col. Mur
ray, who assured the Governor that whatever
the fate of the regiment may be in the future,
it will endeavor by good conduct and a strict
discharge of duty, to make such a record as will
bring no dishonor on the Stars' and Stripes,
which it goes todefend,--or the pro ad old Com
monwealth of Pennsylvania, whose sons and cit
izens they deem it an honor to call : themselves.
Both of the speeches were received with a hear
ty applause, and the cheers given at the termi
nation of the ceremonies were lively and en
thusiastic. The regiment expects to move Dix
ieward to-morrow morning.
How ro MAKE A CHIBIOTY6/1 Tazz.--The pret
ty Christmas trees are gradually superseding the
old German custom of filling the stockings ; and
as some may like to obtain an exact idea of the
modus operand', we will give them a simple
method of preparing one for the children. The
tree itself can doubtless be purchased in the
Square to-morrow for a dime, unless one of un_
usual size is required ; and care should be taken
to select one that branches out finely, so as to
give full effect to the lights and decorations.
The lights are furnished by small wax candles,
which %tribe boughtby the dozen for a trifle, and
are easily attached to the tree. Some people coy
erthem with coloredpaper,like Chinese lanterns,
and they look very pretty in this way ; but it
;is considerable trouble, and the paper is apt to
take fire.
After the lights are properly arranged there
is nothing to do but properly dispose of the
gifts, which should be all ready and labelled
with the names of those for whom they are 'in
tended. The larger and heavier articles must
be ranged round the base of the . tree ; the small
toys, confectionery, and light presents attached
to the branches and main stem by narrow blue
or rose colored ribbon, of which a piece that
costs about twenty-five cents will be required.
When these are tastefidly disposed of, some lit
tle ribbon streamers, sprigs of artificial flowers,
and lady apples may /be 'Sprinkled here and
there wherever they will do the most to render
more brilliant the general effect. The candles
of course must not be lighted until the trim
ming of the tree is completed and it is ready for
exhibition to the delighted throng of children,
to whom it will , give teglimpse of fairy-land.
CEMLSIXAS FUSllND3.—kliillele and gentlemen
breastpins, fob and neck chains, amulets, and a
general assortment of articles suitable for
Christmas presents, can be had at kr Calla's, 88
Market street.
Tax Grump gamma or rim DAY.—What has
caused the great advance in dry goods and
groceries? almost every one inquires, will they
get higher ? Dissatisfied says it is specula
tion, and our friend Mrs. Brown insists that it
cannot last long—the old lady Mrs. Prudence
has looked all around and canvassed the best
infonnation at her disposal, and thinks as mfr.
Dissatistiml cannot control speculation, and Mrs.
Brown's' time is so indefinite, she, Mrs. Prudence
will jpst step in Urich & B owmates'and select a
few pieces of cotton goods from the old stock,
and a dress or two front the beautiful new goods
just arriving; maser of Front and Market
