The holiday season Is upon us, and the t tetekeepers are making their accustomed pre orations for it. The war does not interfere aerially with the arrangements for the festive season, and from present indications, the obser- Ance of the Christnias time,wM"be althost as spirited as when the country is at peace. The passagtowill , be-readitrrecolleeted by meet of hie bearers " What you learn from bad habits and ir i t bad o ss2f9ty," said he, " youpdll never forget; aikallewil bit, 'a .hisdng One to y.m. I tell you in all sincerity, not as in the excitement of speech, but as I would confess and bays confessed before God, I would give ..y right band to-light if I. could 'forget that which I have learned in evil society—if I could tear from my remembrance the scenes which I have witnessed, the transactions which have taken piaci beforenna. You cannot, I believe,. take away the effect of a single impure thought that has lodged and harbored in the heart.— You may pray against it, and, by God's, grace, you may conquer it, but it will, through life, cause you bitterness and anguish." I=l Tus Hor,mAys are approaching, and their ad vent is indicated by the general garnishing up of attractive wares upon the shelves and in the windows of their vendors and despite the strin gency of the times and the "pressure," such matters almost invariably find purchasers if proper means are employed to secure them.— Barnum the "immortal," when asked "what is it,' which has been mainly instrumental in procuring your success in life P—replied with a knowing wink,—•with his thumb upon, his nose, and his fingers gyrating before it, "Printer's Ink!" The reply was worthy of the man, and indicated that knowledge of human nature, and Insight into the workings of the heart, for which he is so noted. Moral.—lf those who have 4mmodities to dispose of fail to have the fact. Presented to the eyes and mind of the people, they have no right to complain of "dullness of the times," and must naturally expect to keep their commodities upon their shelves. Let those interested read, and when they have read "make a note of it." JEFF. AS A Bal-BEAR.—Every nation, saYs our cotemporary of the Philadelphia Bulletin has its traditional bug-hears. Judging from pre sent appearances, we may conclude that Jeff. Davis will be the "black popelman" of Amer.; lean children, for many generations. He is surely as worthy of that distinction as the English (luy Fawkes, whose effigy is every year burned all over England, amid great re joicing. In Scotland, Black Douglas was for a long while the scarecrow of a large portion of the Population, Among our childhood's reminis cences we discover the outlines of a story—pro bably found in the "Scottish Chiefs"—wherein a woman sitting upon one of the towers of a fortres s at midnight, with a child in her arms, is the Prominent figure. She sat there lulling the letbe with some such doggerel as this:— "ffush thee I hush thee I little pet I the Douglas, Douglas cannot get thee ;" w hen suddenly the iron-gloved hand of that warrior was laid on her shoulder, he having Sealed the tower. According to present signs, we may conclude that through long ages, American mothers will be singing similar lullabies , with Jeff's name 15 them, to their children, without being in 'Luger of such a fright as the Scotch woman from. Yon hear the word "Jeff" at st e t turn now among children. All objects ?'lowed and aversion, or which are in receipts tAit jims are "Jeffs." The engine Nifigaiu, purchased some time ago from the Sunbury and Erie company, has been thoroughly overhauled. and rebuilt, at the engine shop of the company in York, under the supervision of Mr. Frederick Scott, the efficient Master of Machinery at that station. Her machinery has been almost en tirely renewed, and several alterations made, adding to her speed and utility.
