Keeney, charged with assault and battery on
oath of Geo. Blough, returned a verdict of
guilty of the assault but not guilty of the bat-
cum. vs. Christina Kramer, charged with as
wit and battery on oath of Mrs. Zimmerman.
Nut guilty, but directed to pay the costs of
prr*ecution.
This cam finished the criminal craendei, and

attendance.

izing for the Dirbuqe Herald during the absence
of the regular eity editor. In. the course of a
fortnight he threw up, his situation in (*gust,

reason, that in his brief experience
he had laid the foundation for thirteen quarrels,
several' of Which had already' become ;serious
fighting matters. A number of canes , had ai
r-m.lly been presented to;him. He was probable
verdant enough to inaugurate his editorial ca
reer by telling the truth about people. He
could not have made a more serious mistake.

them as good as new." This is a hint that is
really worth being practically improved.

mkket ordinances this morning. The offence
crn3sisted in Walters purchasing two hind gnar
+s of veal from a farmer, and afterwards re

' he Soldier's Friend" I send the directions for
fitting mittens, learning from your issue of
' morning that she desired to occupy a por
tion of her time in providing for the comfort of
our bnwe volunteers. They must be knit.with
one finger, to allow a free use of the first finger
and thumb.
; "Cast twenty : stitches on eaoh needle, knit
twenty-five rows of ribbing, and twenty rows
plain. Then take the twenty stitches that are
upon one needle, and knit sixteen rows back
ward. and forward. This is for the beginning
of the thumb. Then take these twenty stitches
on three needles, and knit round for sixteen
rows, after which narrow gradually until the
thumb is finished. Take up twenty stitches at
the lower part of the thumb. Then there will
sixty stitches on the three needles. Knit
twenty rows, Take the twenty stitches nearest
the thumb, join them on threeneedles, and knit
twenty-two rows, Then narrow gradually un
til the finger is finished. Take the remaining
forty stitches on three needles, and knit twenty
two rows. Narrow gradually till finished."
