i‘ \I I min FOR TII% VOLUNTEERS.—During the
rcinn r now drawing to a close the wives and
olioarts of the brave men who rallied to the
of the Government added materially to
t 6.6 66nifort of the soldiers by supplying them
havelocks, without which many would
16 6%, 16oen stricken down, while making forced
DLL: Lis, by the extreme heat. In addition,
,166,1... handkerchiefs and needle-books were
61.1 i.rd by our patriotic ladies throughout
11,6 state, and thankfully received by the troops.
Ii a little time the "sewing societies," which
have heretofore rendered material assistance to
pla. of every city, village or town, will be
orahized for "the season," and we would sug
g, ,t I them to commence iknn early day the. I
%%. 6, I. of knitting socks for the soldiers in the
Jai army. Let our young misses, fresh
ft at, , CllOOl, lay aside their crochet work for a
1.1i6 I season, arm themselves with knitting
1,, dies and a hank or two of yarn, and labor
csilt assiduity in making stockings or socks for
66111 brave soldiers, who will soon be exposed to
t 166 ...verity of the winter, fast approaching.
The employment of knitting is admirably
adapted for social gatherings among the fair
sex, and can be taken up or laid down without
trouble. Ladies, you can carry your knitting
wilh you up stairs and down stairs, and even
whiln visiting take occasion to put in a few
stir lies for the good cause. If you don't know
how to knit get "granny" to show you—the
IS easily acquired and is always useful. In
stead of making fancy needle books and frilled
night raps and skirts with thirty or forty tucks,
knit soldier's socks. Already has the country
incurred a debt to the ladies of the laud for
their exertions in the cause of philanthropy and
patriotism, yet we feel that our loyal women
are ready to add to that debt.

WHAT A STRANGER SATS OF HARRISBURG.—A
correspondent of the National Republican of
Washington, D. C., on his travels through
Pennsylvania, thus alludes to our city
Before leaving Harrisburg, we took a gener
, 1 tour through the city, first visiting the State
ouse, which is located in a central and very
ealthy part of the city, the ground laying very
J. igh. It is a very delightful spot, particularly
in the summer season. The grounds upon
which the State House and adjacent buildings
are built, cover a space of ten or twelve acres,
all of which is beautifully laid out, having an
abundance of fine shade trees, and enclosed by
a neat iron railing. In the centre of these
grounds is the State House itself a very sub
stantial looking building, two stories in height,
about 150 feet in length, and 70 in width. It
is built of press-brick, and has but little orna
ment any ere about it. As you enter the ro
tunda, the most conspicuous object that meets
the eye is an immense American flag reaching
from the top of the dome nearly to the ground,
a distance, perhaps, of fifty feet. The halls in
which the Legislature meets are entered direct-.
ly from the rotunda. They are rather mall,
and the ceilings are decidedly too low. There
are no galleries, and seats for not more than one
hundred visitors in either hall.
To the east of the State House is another
building of the same style, but about half the
size, over the door of which, in large black let
ters, we find the words, " State and Treasury
Department ;" and another building to the west
of the State House, which is used for the Land
Department.
At the west end of the grounds, where a ma
chine shop is in full operation, a number of ces
sions and cannon are being fixed rip ready for
immediate use
The streets of Harrisburg are rather sandy,
and consequently there are but few hacks here,
and not many omnibueses. The principal pub.
lic conveyance is a light carryall, capable of
taking four persons.
As You enter this city by the Northern Cen
tral road, two magnificent stone bridges crossing
the Susquehanna river, each about a mile in
length, meet the view. One of these bridges is
used exclusively by the cars, and is an open
bridge. The other, which it covered, is used
butte for vehicles and pedestrians. They are
both very costly bridges, and much alike in
their general appearance
For an inland city of tWenty thousand tub' ab
i tants, the amount of business done here is very
large, and it boast s of teeny yetyfine dw . . ;
es well as nice -looking stores. There are EIRo
a number of very fine churches and several Well
kept hotels.

Kan To ma RIGHT-WAIZERI >F THE kasser—
A correspondent wishes us to call the attention
of persons walking our pavements to the neces
sity of always keeping to the right. In New
York the whole population pours into Broad
way, and though there are twenty times the
number crowding that thoroughfare that will
be found in any single street in this city, every
body keeps on his course without interrupting
others or being turned aside himself, simply
because he observes the rule always to turn to
the right. The convenience of this rule is so
obvious that we should scarcely think it requir
ed any urging to make it invariably adopted,
did we but know that a great many persons act
in most common affairs without any rule at
all, Or any idea that the act is governed by
rule.
Osmium To ros Itiasasso.—We learn that or
ders have gone from Washington to Philadel
phia for the release of Mean. Carson, Honey
and Nunn, arrested in this city a few days
since, by order of the government. It is said
to have been satisfactorily proved to the gov
ernment that the visit of these gentl emen to
the South lilts purely on private busing, and
that the funirsYound in their possession are the
polexid s of collection' of money due them.

Company will be held in their hall this

Lsoruns or Miss Li SEUR.—A correspondent
who was present at the recent lecture by Miss
Le Seur on "Our Republic" in the Locust street
Methodist church, pronounces it an eloquent
composition, delivered with earnestness and
taste, reflecting much credit upon its gifted
author. Its tendency was to cultivate a zeal
ous patriotism.
EDITOR Tinaxittapn—Dear Sir: Some friend
having named me in your paper several days
ago as a candidate for the Legislature, permit
me, in reply, to say, that I have not been, and
am not at this time, a candidate, but will give
my mite to any man who will sustain the State

In thin unpleasant predicament, I was ioduced to try
Wood's; Hair Restorative, mainly to arrest the falling
off of my hair, fort bad realty no expectation that gray
hair could ever be restored to its original color except
from dyes. I was, however, greatly surpris.d to find
after the use of two Rollos only, that not only was the
falling oil arreste d , but the color was restored to the gray
hairs aid sensib ility to the scalp, and dandruff ceased to
form oni my bead, very much to the gratification of my
wife, at whose solicitation I was induced to try It.
For this, among the many obligations I owe to her sex,
I strongly recommend all husbands who v4lne the d
