The United States Gun Boat Flag, Com
mander Sartori, (formerly the Phineas Sprague)
arrived off the powder magazine, at Fort Mif
flin, this morning, from Savannah.
She brought thirty-six pirate prisoners, taken
from a rebel vessel of war off Charleston, on the
afternoon of the Ist instant. The rebel craft
was sunk by a broadside from the United States
lrlgate St. Lawrence. Five of her men were
drowned, but the. remaining thirty-six saved,
and are now planners.
They ware put on board the Flag, where they
have been heavily ironed and under a constant
guard. We are informed that they are a villai
nous looking set of fellows. The vessel that
was sunk was formerly the United States reve
nue cutter Aiken, that was seized by the seces
sionists at Charleston, last November.
The officers of the Aiken evidently did not
understand the character of the St. Lawrence.
She came boldly out of Charleston harbor, and
fired two shots at her. The St. Lawrence re
turned the fire, and at the first discharge sunk
her, rescuing most of those on board, as we
hive already stated.
The Flag, which brought the prisoners to the
Delaware, sailed from the Philadelphia Navy
Yard last May, since which time she has been
cruising off Hampton road, "Charleston and
Savannah," overhauling vessels and chasing
their steamers when attempting to come out,
&c. She had a skirmish with one on the 27th
of last June, off Tybee Island, causing her to
beat a hasty retreat after receiving a broadside
of shell. The officers and crew are all well and
ready to return as soon as necessary repairs
are finished. The following Is a list of her

The Flag, with her prisoners, is on her way
up to the city, but will not arrive before four or
five o'clock.. The prisoners will be handed over
to the United States Marshal.
The rebel vessel, we are informed, was called
the "Petrel," under her new commission. The
St. Lawrence's shot are said to have cut her
completely in two.

The Santa Fe Mail and Canon City Express
arrived in this city last night three days ahead
of time bringing dates from Santa Fe to the 241
and Canon City to the 26th nit. Business in
New Mexico was still dull. The crops looked
fine owing to recent rains.
There was a great deal of excitement in
Mexico on account of the threats of the Texans
to capture the government property. An ex
press from New Mexico overtook 1,000 soldiers
returning to the States at Bents's old fort, with
orders from them to return to New Mexico.
It was feared the Texans were going to cap
ture the government forts in that Territory.
Two Federal officers, Capt. John If. James and
Lient R. G. fiantland, of the Seventh Infantry,
had deserted from the United States service at
Fort Filmore and joined the Texans.
By the latest acconnts the Texans had assem
bled at Fort Bliss, about seven hundred strong,
with a number of pieces of artillery. Their
pickets approached within ten miles of Fort
Fillmore at which point there are thirteen com
panies of regulars to meet them. A few days
previous three companies left the Fort for Nes-
Mlle to take down any secession flag that may
be found floating. As Texas supports Arizona
this act may bring about a collision.
The mining regions of San Juan are now
abandoned as all classes are disappointed in
finding gold though the tudkzrAions of it are
Iraq flattering; lioritliazH, forty persons have
bet their lives in that region. Twenty-four
were killed by the Indians. Thelmaters of the
placer mines are in good spirits and very san
guine of complete success in their under
taking.
Mr. John Grimes, of Ohio, reached Santa
Fe, and had entered upon the duties of his
office. Indians were met by the mail party,
bat they were all friendly. The weather is
extremely hot on the plains.

butter has an improving tendency on account
of the non arrival of the steamer Sonora, which

pion on the Atlantic side, and also on account
of eastern advices instructing holders not to
sacrifice their stocks. Thepresent price is
about 25 cts. ; Hie coffee 1810'19 ; Wheat is
drooping, having declined 5 to 10 cis. per 100
lbs: since harvest commenced. Barley is quo
ted at 85 ; best flour S 2 50 per sack.
GENERAL NEWS.'
The Pony Express arrived yesterday with
Eastern dates to the lBth inst , with accounts
of Gen. McClellan's succes3 in Western Virginia
and the continued retreat of the rebels toward
the interior of Virginia. The news is inspiring
to the Union men.
The Overland kiail continues to arrive regu
larly. The price of passage from Sacramento
to §t. Joseph has been fixed at $l6O.
Easiengern lake came throntlarin the Mail
stages seem to regard the trip as one of uo
great hardship, although compelled to ride con
tinually, night and day, for eighteen days.
Since the last dispatch a new telegraph sta
tion has been opened, twentv-five miles further
east, with prospects of another like extension
before another Pony Express.
The candidates of all three political parties are
in the field, engaged in an active canvass of the
State. Between the Union democrats and re
publicans, only State issues exist, as both parties
largely sustain the administration war policy.
The Breckinridgers aho make great pretentious,
but claim that the prosecuting of the war ren
eers the preservation of the Union hopeless.
They seem to favor about the same policy that
the Buchanan administration was pursuing on
the accession of Lincoln.
Ez,Senator (twin made a speech recently at
Warren, principally on a topic personal to him
self. He said it was his last political speech,
and he appears to take but little interest in the
politics of the day.
By the way of Los Angelos, we have later
news of the party of Secessionists, including
Gen. Johnson's men. They were last heard of
at Tucson in Arizona, numbering about 50.
Several had joined the party after leaving Los
Angelos, and among them were Major Arm
stead, Lieut. Hardcistle, of the Sixth Infantry;
Mr. Armatead, a brother of the Major, and
others.
Some of the large rancho owners in the south
ern counties of this State, have commenced
slaughtering their cattle for their hides and tal
low only, there being no farming work for beef.
It is said that at the current rates of the various
portions of the animal, they will net nearly $l2
in gross, which is much better than buying at
the rates. This shows that driving cattle awl
sheep to California from the Eastern States, will
not longer pay.

The steamer Columbia arrived yesterday from
Oregon with dates to the 28d, and bringing
$9,700 in treasure.
The Portland Advertiser of the 23d of July
says : The steamer Julia arrived last night
bringing $285 in gold dust, from the Nez Perce
mines.
At letter from our correspondent at Orflino,
dated on the 23d instant, says :—The mines are
paying wherever the claims have been fully
opened. I have seen a great deal of dust in the
last ten days, but gold and silver coin is very
scarce and there is difficulty in disposing of
it. These mines are no longer an experiment.
They are fast progressing and assuming the
position of substantial towns, as we anticipated.
There has been no satisfactory result from the
Nes-pence Council at Lapway. It had been in
cession for three days, and the Indians were
stubborn, manifesting no kindly feelings. There
were over three hundred present at the Counci I.
These were indisposed to accept the annuity
goods and some declined outright to take the
presents. Some two hundred and fifty of the
Indians refused to take the beef of the agent,
drawing up their own cattle and slaughtering
them in front of the agency.
Trouble is anticipated with the Snake Indians
on Salmon river by the miners who were there,
prospecting.
The Indian who shot Judge Washington was
given up by the chief of the Spokanes. - He
confessed his crime before Squire Hall, at Sol
dile, and was forthwith hung by the whites at
that place.

By the steamer Senator, which arrived here
yesterday afternoon, from ports on the South
ern coast, we have correspondence and papers
from San Diego and Los Angelos.
The Star remarks that by the arrival of, the
mails from El Paso, it has late and reliable In
formation from Arizona. The whole country
lies at the mercy of the Indians.

goons, with Lieut. Davis, started for Fort Teuson

We have heard a rumor on the street, that

The report that the rebels are at Bush Hill,
is entirely untrue. There are none of theta
within ten miles of Alexandria.
The city is very quiet, most of the Senators
and Representatives, as well as many others,
having already left for home.
The sppropriations made by Congress at the
late extra session, amount to two hundred and
seventy millions of dollars.
An Irishman, a deserter from Manassas, who
had been impressed into the rebel service, came
within our lines today. He says that the
enemy retain their old position, bnt they are
very badly fed, and much disorganized since
the late battle. He also states that large nom
hers of men are being impressed into the rebel
service, foreigners especially being selected.
The War Department has received informa
tion of a victory gained by Gen Lyon over the
rebel forces under Ben. McCulloch, in South
Western Missouri, but no details are given.

The steamship Columbia arrived at this port
this afternoon with Havana dates to the Sd
inst. The Captain General of Cuba fe absent at
St. Domingo taking formal possession of Domi
nician Territory for the Spnnish Crown. No
foreign war vessels were at Havana. Street
and highway robberies and other depredations
seem to be on the increase.
The Havana markets were active. Sugar
quoted slightly higher at 7i(3,8i reels--
stock in port 120,000 boxes. Molasses was
steady. Freights dull. No business was offer
ing for American vessels.
Money was plenty and the health of Havana
improving.
The Columbia reports on July 26th In latitude
82:44, in longitude [ 78:19, she passed a small
schooner with something covered up on her
deck. On approach of the steamer she hoisted
the American flag, which saved her from rough
usage. After passing the schooner she made
all sail in an opposite direction. On Aug. Bth
the Columbia spoke the brig Sarah Starr, bound
to New York, with a piize crew aboard.
