The. United. States Gun Boat 'Flag, Com

arrived off the powder magazine, at Fort Mif

She brought thirtpsia pirate prisoners, taken
from a rebel vessekoi war off Charleston, on the
aftemoon of the Est instant. The rebel craft
was sunk by 11. *tame from the United States
frigate St. -Lawrence. Fire of her men were

They were put on board the i flath where they
have been heavily ironed and itidiea cops tent

The officers of the Aiken evidently dilt-'not
understand the character of the St. lawcince.
She Inane boldly out of Charleston harbor, and
fired two 'ahots at her. Tha St. lArence re
turned: the fire, and. at the first discharge sunk
her, reaoning moat of those •on board, as we
have already stated.
Tie Flag*, which brought the prisoners to the
Delaware, sailed from the Philadelphia Navy
tard last May, since which time she has been
cruising off Hampton road, " limiest= and
Sayszinah," overhauling vessels and chasing
;their steam= when attempting to come out,
ttc. She hada skinnish with one on the 27th

beat a hasty retreat after receiving a 'broadside
of shell. The officers and craw_ are all well • •

The_Senta Fe Mail and Canon City Express

of time bringing dates from Santa Fe to the 2d

New Mexico was still dull. The crops looked

retuning to Ihe States at Bents's old fort, with
orders from them to return to New Mexico.
It was feared' the Texans were going to cap

Two Federal.officens, Capt, John M. James and

COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE_
The market for goods affected by the tariff
changes continue excited, and the action of
Congress on the recommendation of the Secre
tary of the Treasury- is anxiously awaited. In
other.respects the market is quiet. Wining
butter has an improving tendency on account
of the non arrival of the steamer Sonora, which
hi delayed by the accident to the steamer Chem
pion. on the Atlantic side, and also on ''account
of eastern advices instructing holders not to
sacrifice their stocks. The present price' is
about /6 eta. ; Rio coffee 18440119 ; Wheat is
droofdrtg, having.declined 5 to 10 cts. per 100
lts. slice harvest commenced. Barley Is quo

GENERAL - NEWS.
Pony &pros arrived yesterday with
Eastern dates to the 18th inst., with accounts
of Gen. McClellan's success in Western rginia
and the continued retreat of the rebels toward
the interior of Virginia. The nm inspiring
e Overland Mail continues to arrive regu
larly. The price of passage from Sacramento
to St. Joseph has been fixed at $l6O.
-Passengers who came through in the mail
stages seem to regard the trip as one of co
great hardship, although compelled to ride con
tinually, night and day, for eighteen days.
Since the last dispatch a new telegraph sta
tion has been opened, twentv-five miles further
east, with prospects of another like extension
before another Pony Express.
The candidates of all three political parties are
in the field, engaged in an active canvass of the
State. Between the - Union dernocra,ts and re
publicans, only State issues exist, as both parties
largely sustain the administration war polity.
The 'Breckinridgers also make great pretentious,
but claim that the prosecuting of the war ren
eeni the preservation of the 'Union hOpeless.
They seem to favor about the same policy that
the Buchanan administration was pursuing on
the accession of Lincoln.
Ea-Senator Gwin made a speech recently at
Warren, principally on a topicpersonal to him
self. He said it was his last political speech,
and he appears to take but little interest in the
politics of the day.
By the way of Los Angelos, we have later
news of the party of Seceselonitts, including
Gen. Jolmson's men. They were last heard of
at Tucson in Arizona, numbering about 50.
Several had joined the party after leaving Los
Angelos, and among them were Major Arm
stead, Hardcastle' of the Eolith Infantry;

Some of the large rancheowners in the south

It is said that, at the current rates of the various

the rates., This.showu that driving cattle' and
sheep to California from the Eastern States, will
not longer pay.
The steamer Columbia, arrived yesterday from

At letter from our correspondent at Orflino,

paying wherever the , claims have been fully
opened. I have seen a great 44114 dust inthe
last ten days, but gold and silver 'win is very
scarce' and there is difflonltg in dhipbsing of
it. These mines are no longer an experiment.
They are. fast programing and assuming the
position of substantial towns, as wp anticipated.
There has been no' satisfactory 'result 'from the
Nez : perce Council at Lapway. It had been in

were over three hundred present at the Council.
These were indispoited to accept the annuity

REPORT OF A DESERTER FROM
MANASSAS
THE REBEL ARMY DISORGANIZED
THE VICTORY IN MISSOURI.
The report that the rebels axe•at Bush Hill,
is entirely untrue. Thera are nope of them
within ten miles of Alexandria.
The city is very quiet, most of the, Senators
and Representatives, as well as many others,
having already left for home.
The appropriations made by Congas" at the
late extra session, amount to two hundred and
seventy millions of dollars.
An Irishman, a deserter from Manassas, who
had been impressed into the rebel serviee, came
within our lines today. He says that the
enemy retain their old position, but they are
very badly fed, and much disorganized since
the late battle. Ho also states that large num
bers of men are being impressed into the rebel
service, foreigners especially being selected.
The War Department has received informa
tion of kvictery gained by Glen .Lyon over the
rebel forces under Ben. McCulloch, In South
Western Missouri, but no details are given.
