HARRISBURG
Saturday Afternoon, June 1, 1861
PRESBYTERIAN SERVICES.—On an after to
morrow the Sabbath evening service in the
Old School Presbyterian church of this city will
commence at six o'clock P. M. This arrange
ment will be continued during the summer.
I=
RELIGIOUS SERVICES IN CA w.—The usual re
ligious services will be held in Camp Curtin
to-morrow. Mass in the morning for the bene
fit of the Catholic volunteers, and addresses by
some of the Protestant clergymen in the af
ternoon.
SUTLER FOR TUE ARMY.—Gen. Philip Irwin,
of Middletown, in this county, has been ap
pointed a Sutler in the United States Army.
Among the deputies selected by the General is
Walter Kendig, also of Middletown, now at
Camp Scott in an official capacity.
CAP TRIEP.-A man named John Higgins
was before Justice Baader this morning, charg
ed with stealing a cap from Wm. Warden.
['pen consenting to return the stolen article,
and pay the costs, he was discharged. Officer
Wickert made the arrest.
A LADY 0001ILIST.—We invite attention to
the card of Miss Laura Le Suer, a lady Occulist,
now on a professional visit to this city, and
stopping at Berr's hotel. She comes highly
recommended by the Pittsburg papers, in which
city she has been operating for the last two
years.
IN PRISON AGAIN.—Last night officer Cole
found Elizabeth Marshall perambulating the
streets under the influence of tangle-foot, and
behaving in a disorderly manner unbecoming
her sex. She was escorted to her old familiar
quarters in. Walnut street.
=I
LIBBRAL. —We hear of a patriotic farmer in
a neighboring county who has offered to give
all the grain he has on hand, and fifty head of
cattle, to feed the Pennsylvania volunteers.
The God of harvests will surely bless that
farmer, and reward him with abundant crops
the coming season.
I==l
NOTlCE.—Having been unable to effectuate
the numerous orders I received these last few
days, I will extend my stay in this city until
next Wednesday evening the sth of June, when
I will close my office positively here.
M. I. FRANKLIN, Optician.
Harrisburg, May 31st, 1861.-4 d.
I=l
REIC,OTERT OF STOLEN PROPERTY. —A few days
ago a magnifying glass was stolen from the store
of Mr. Franklin adjoining this office. The ar
ticle was subsequently found by officers Rada
baugh and Wickert at M'CuHough's pawnbroker
shop, where two boys offered it for sale. Mr.
M'Cullough, suspecting the glass to have been
stolen, refused to purchase but took possession
of it, with a view of restoring it to the owner.
I=l
BEATY Gus CARRIAGE6.—A large shipment
of heavy gun carriages has been made over the
Pennsylvania Railroad for some days past. The
carri Iges are of the' most massive description,
deeigned for mounting twenty-four and thirty
two pounders, and perhaps heavier guns. The
work on Ihem is such as the government gen
erally exacts, of the very best kind. They are
destined for points in the west and south-west.
IN &ARON OF HIS MOTHDR. —A small boy who
came here from Petersburg, Perry county, in
search of his mother, living somewhere in the
city, wandered into the Mayor's office this
morning. ' The lad was without money and
hungry, and our worthy Mayor kindly furnish
ed him with funds to procure breakfast. We
did not learn the bay's name, or the cause of
desertion by his mother, but hope his mission
may prove successful.
I=El=l
FUGITIVES FROM THE SOUTH.—Within a few
days we have noticed on the streets a number
of strange colored men, evidently " seceders "
fiem the rebe,l territory. One result of the ex
isting war will be a large increase in the colored
population of the free States. We are inform
ed by those who have opportunities of know
ing, that since the commencement of the re
bellion, hundreds of southern " chattles" have
passed through this city en route to the north.
I=l
Tna ANNUAL MEETING of the colored Union
Sabbath School Association will be held in the
Presbyterian church, Walnut street, to-morrow
afternoon. An interesting feature of the ex
ercises will be addresses by Reverends Cattell
and Robinson. The Sabbath schools connected
with the various colored churches of the city
are well attended and in a flourishing condition.
The excellent manner in which some of them
are conducted reflects great credit upon the
superintendents and teachers.
BEFORE TEE MAYOR.—Thia morning three
dilapidated specimens of humanity, all victims
of cheap whisky, were before the Mayor. John
Raskin, an old offender, who got drunk and
abused his family, was sent to prison for ten
days. Edward O'Bryan having no wife to whip,
and being anxious to display his skill in the
pugilistic art, went,in on the "free fight" prin
ciple, auditing almost every man he met on
the street. The Mayor placed Edward under the
reformatory discipline of Professor Boyd for
forty-eight hours.
PATRIOTIC.—The ladies of Lykertstown, in
this county, have manufactured seventy, "Have
locks" and forwarded them to the Washington
Rifle company, now in camp at Chambsrsburg.
The 14 keustown ladies have set an example
worthy of imitation by their sisters in this city.
Our - volunteers will feel the want of these light
and useful head-coverings when doing duty on
the scorching plains of the south. They cost lit
tle, are easily made by any lady accustomed to
use the needle, and afford excellent protection
agaisst the rays of the sun in hot weather. La
dies at home can make them up and have them
forwarded to the quarter-master of the regi
ment to which they wish to 4ve di em dis
tributed.
Ray. S. S. RICHMOND, of Altoona, will preach
in Brant's Hall (Court Room) to-morrow morn
ing and evening at the usual hour.
VERBEKE Rorms.—The regiment with which
this company is connected will leave Lancaster
to-morrow morning at nine o'clock Their des
tination is supposed to be Chambersburg.
TETE POLLOCK GUARD, of Milton, accepted as
part of the reserve corps, arrived here this af
ternoon, accompanied by an excellent silver
cornet band, and went into quarters at Camp
Curtin. A number of recruits for the Iron
Guard also arrived in the same train and were
escorted to camp by a detachment of the com
pany.
GOOD APPOINTMENT. —The school directors of
the north ward have appointed Malcolm B
Montgomery collector of school tax for the
present year. The directors showed their good
sense and business discretion in the selection,
as Mr. Montgomery is in every way a reliable
and efficient gentleman, and will undoubtedly
make a prompt collector.
VANDALISM.-At an early hour this morning
some persons invaded the premises of Col. John
Berryhill, Daniel Boas, Esq., and Mrs. Dr.
Orth, on Front street, and plucked a large
quantity of choice flowers, mutilating and in
juring some of the bushes. Suspicion attaches
to four women who were afterwards detected
plucking roses from a bush in the yard of Mr.
Andrew S. Black in State street. The penal
code inflicts a severe penalty for offences of this
kind, and we hope the perpetrators of the out
rage may be arrested and punished. The gar
dens of the persons above named are among
the most beautiful in this city, and contain
flower bushes of the most choice and valuable
varieties, which the owners have spared no la
bor or expense in cultivating.
AR ITEM FOR Besnros MEN.—Our merchants
and mechanics, and all classes of business men, I
who desire to retain and if possible increase
their business in these panic-stricken times
should advertise largely and persistently. They
make a grand mistake in helping to produce
the very stagnation they deplore, by withhold
ing their advertisements from the public jour
nals, and relapsing into do-nothing apathy,
until something shall• turn up" to their ad
vantage. They will be likely to find, however,
that the community will not dig them out of
the graves into which they have buried them
selves, but will bestow their custom upon those
who are alive and continue to let the public
know that they are prepared to serve them as
heretofore, with a larger variety of better
goods at prices in accordance with the times.
Music IN THE PUBLIC Senors.—The Board of
School Directors of the north ward, at a meet
ing held last evening, decided to dispense with
the teaching of music in the male schools, and
also with the services of Mr. Tarbutton, at. the
expiration of the present quarter. We doubt
whether this action will be approved by citi
zens who concede the importance of vocal music
as a branch of common school education, and
are aware of the rapid progress which their
children have made under the effective tuition
of Mr. Tarbutton, who has discharged his duty
with scrupulous fidelity, and become a great
favorite with the pupils. The Board determined
'to confine the teaching of music exclusively to
the female schools, and employ a lady teacher
at the same salary now paid Mr. Tarbutton
for his services in that capacity in all the north
ward schools. We hope that Mr. Tarbutton,
before retiring, will give a public concert, in
order that out citizens may see and hear for
themselves, and place a proper estimate upon
his labors in the responsible position which he
has so faithfully and ably filled. We feel as
sured that such an entertainment would result
creditably to him and his pupils, and afford a
high degree of gratification to parents and lov
ers of music generally.
A BOLD Act or DrmANcs—A Palmetto Flag on
the Market House.—As the Market-Master, F. P.
llaehnlen, was entering upon his usual duty
this morning at 4 o'clock, he discovered in the
twilight a largo flag floating from the south
end of the lower market house, on a pole
twenty-feet long. There was something strange
in the folds of the flag that did not suit the
gaze of Mr. Uaehnlen, and on examination he
found that it was a regular Palmetto Flag, the
original emblem of the traitors of South Caro
lina. It is evident that this flag was placed
on the market house as a defiance to the troops
encamped in this city, as well as an insult to
the loyal people of the Capital of Pennsylvania
If it was done by some spy who is prowling
within the limits of the State, we are 'almos t
led to admire his bold audacity—but if it was
nailed thus boldly to one of our public build
ings by a traitor living in our midst, he de
serves alike the execrations of his neighbors,
and ei banishment from the city. Fortunately
the flag was discovered before many people had
assembled in the market, or the excitement
might have led to serious consequences. As
it was, the affair created a great sensation, and
the author should be ferreted out by the au
thorities. We commend the matter to the
vigilance of Alayor Kepner.

BLACK Taoors IN THE REBEL AILIIY.—The
Hartford Times publishes the following ex
tract of a letter dated Pittsborough, Chatham
county, N. C., May 20 :
" Every free negro in this county, so far as I
can learn, has enlisted to fight the abolition
ists, and there are enough to make a regiment.
All the slaves who can obtain consent have al
so enlisted."
While these traitors are carrying Africa into
the war, they may wake up, some fine morn
ing and find that somebody else has carried the
war into Africa.
