SENATOR, MASON NOT AMSTED,.
BALTIMORE QUIET.
THE NEW YORK SMNTEC REGIIONE
The Steamer Adelaide Fired into by

EXTENDED TIME OP SERVICE OP TEE
pv UNTEERS.
Government Armory at Rock Island, 111.
Pziarrsrvara), April 29, Evening
Senator Mason has not been arrested. The
report must hare started by the detention of
some parties for examination.
The latest, arrival from Baltimore reports
the city quiet.
A member of the New York seventh regi
ment from Washington, says when that regi
ment offered its servius to the Government it
was for the defence of the Capital, and not to
engage in war against any State or States.
Fifty members had refused to take the oath on
reaching Washington. The rest took it on
condition not to be called out of the District of
Columbia. He says the feeling of the regiment
toward the people of Baltimore is of the most
friendly character.
BALTHIORE, April 29.—The steamer Adelaide
arrived at Baltimore on Saturday morning froin
Norfolk. She reports having been fired into
off Old Point Comfort by the a g rlet Lane.
WASHINGTON, April 29.
The Government to day formally decided to
receive forty thousand of the seventy-five
thousand volunteers, recently called for by prc.
clanaation, for the term of three years ; twen
ipfive thousand for five years, and eighteen
thousand sailors for the same period.
Orders to carry this measure into effect will
be at once issued. An armory in placepf that
at Harper's Ferry is to be established at Rock
Leland, 111.
JIM A SUOMI KEEPS HIS WORD OF HONC4I.--
It is refre-hlog in this day, when Twiggs and
Beauregard and Hamilton, among warriors,
and Wigfall and Breokinridge among Senators,
sworn to allegiaece, are recreant to their oaths,
to read the narrative of the old soldier, Peter.
Hart, who was is Fort Sumter during the siege.
The story carries its own moral, and needs no
word of comment. Hart was an old soldier
under Anderson at Mexico. When Hrs.
Anderson visited Fort Sumter, Hatt ac
companied her, by permission of the Oorgeder
' ate authorities, on giving his parole not to fight
,•hould he conclude to remain in the garrison.
When the bombardment commencLd, the sol
dier mounted the parapet wall, and shouted to
the men : "Now fire away boys, I can't fight
without breaking a soldier's word, but I'll tell
where your shots strike, and where to look' for
danger."
Thus conspicuously a mark during the whole
two day's bombardment, Hart left the parapet
only once, aud that was to climb the flagstaff
' to nail the colors to the peak, after the halliards
had been shot away
AVENGED RS IiIOTHER —The Louisville De
mocrat of the 21st, says : A min named Peter
Smith was shot yesterday morning, on the Jef
fersonville ferry boat; by his illegitimate son,
Francis Marion Smith. The young man states
that the former had seduced his mother forty
years ago, and brought her to a career of pros
•titution. He states that his twiner, on her
death bed, _about a year ago, told him of these
facts,
and told him to avenge her. The young
man first stabbed him, atm then shot him in
the back' of the head, the ball coming out
above the eye, literally blowing his brains out.
He died immediately:= Peter Smith was well
known as a wine grower, and resided near
Utica, Indiana and is connected by marriage
with respectable families in this city. He was
highly respected by a laige circle of friends.
A PERFECT MAN.—The man deserving the
name is one whose thoughts and exertions are
for others, rather than for himself ; whnee high
pnrpose is adopted on just principles, and
never abandoned while heaven or earth af
fords means of accomplishing it. He is one
who will neither seek an indirect advan-
Lege by a - specious word, nor take an evil
path to secure a real good purpose. .:Sach a
man is ono for whom a woman's heart • BA:it:mid
lkat constantly while he breathes, and break
when he dies. •
Taw; NAVY YARDS of New York and Brook
lyn are torning out vessels as fast as possible to
assist in blockading Southern forts. The ac
tivity in these yards never was so great.' In a
few weeks the traitors will be a,s well confined
as if they were under lock and key.
AN ERA OF GOOD FEDLING.—The Indiana
Legis ature on eissembliug the other day,
though strongly Republican, voted to divide
the (aces in its gift with the Democrats.
A single Odd Fellow's Lodge, Covenant. No.
35, of New York, have appropriated . 32000 to
