last evening, for which they have our warmest

troops has 'sued proposals for the purchase of

of firemen„front Pottsville, arrived in our city
at noon to-By., and have taken up their quar
ters* Camp Curtin. They are a fine stalwart
body of young men, and will render good ser
vice on the field of notion.
ARRIVAL OP NVESTREN TROOPS.- About six
tam hundred volunteers, principally from
Pittsburg, Washington and Westmoreland
counties, arrived in this city between one and
two o'olook this morning. They joined Camp
Curtin, and were mustered into the United
States service to-day.
TUE MOD AND ORDER which prevails in our
city, notwithstanding the presence of an im
mense concourse of strangers, is the subject of
general remark. This cheering state of affairs
is owing, in a great measure, to the existence
of the special police appointed by Mayor Kep
ner.

'Tsar stattarts of the Committee of Public
'Safety, whose names appeared in the proceed
ings of the town meeting, published on the
outside of this evening's TamaArn from
our morning edition, are requested to meet at
the Court House at half-past seven o'clock this
evening.
Thi "ISDNUNDANT RANGERS," Capt. C. M.
Donovan, the "Ross Rifles," Capt. Wm. H.
Miller, the "Verbeke Rifles," and the "Lochiel
Guards," are the names of the . four military
companies recently organized in this city. We
believe tlfat each have the full compliment of
men, and are anxiously awaiting an acceptation
of their services by the Governor.
&MVO DIMS AT CAMP OURTIN.-A volunteer
named John &error died suddenly at Camp
Curtin last night. The deceased marched to
this city a few days ago as a private in a
Pittsburg volunteer company, but the company
being -too large, be with others joined the
Washington Light Infantry of Pinegrove,
Schuylkill county. Justice Reader this morn
ing held an inquest over the body, and the ju
ry returned a verdict in accordance with the
facts.
Fsersswoarar.—At a meeting of Harrisburg
Lodge No. 68 Z. 0. of 0. F., it was unanimous
ly resolved to exempt the members of Bali
Lodge belonging to volunteer companies now
Serving their country from the payment of all
dues during their absence, and in case of their
death to pay the usual amount of money pro
vided for in such cases to their widows.
Washington Lodge I. 0. of Good Teroplars
have pawed a similar resolution with reference
to the dues of the soldiers belonging to that
Lodge.
A PATBIOTIC Towx.—The good people resid
ing in the little town of Halifax, this county,
are very enthusiastic in their patriotic demon
strations. Whenever soldiers pass through the
village in the care of the Northern Central rail
wadi,. their appearance is greeted with hearty
cheering, waving of flags, and other tokens of
welaome. The ladies assemble upon the balco
nies and sing the national airs, while the peo
ple for Mile) around, vie with each other in fur
nishing cakes, pies and other acceptable crea
tive comforts to the way-fivers. Such gener
osity is appreciated.

Special report of Grand Jury recommending
an appropriation of $lO,OOO out of the county
funds, for support of the familiea of volunteers
during the present war, read in open Court and

Moss ARRIVALS—STARTLING INOIDENT.—Two
fine military companies, one from Lock Haven
and the other from Mill Hall, Centre county,
accompanied with an excellent brass band, ar
rived in this city at 1 o'clock to-day, and have
joined Camp Curtin..
A little incident occured, previous to the de
parture of these companiei from home that
served to inspire them and other spectators with
the wildest enthusiasm. Jest as the compan
ies had marched to the depot of the Northern
Central Railroad in that borough, for .the pup
pose of embarking on the cars for this
city, a large bald eagle approached from the
mountains and hovered in the air for sev
eral minutes directly over the cars ; and
then as the noise made by the irre
pressible acclaim from a' thousand throats
greeted the noble bird, it flapped its wings and
ascended in majestic circles up, up, until lost
to view in the mighty empyrean. The inci
dent was regarded as a favorable omen, and
filled the hearts of all who witnessed it with
additional courage in the great fight for the
maintenance of our glorious "(Won.
Tics TENT/1 REGIMENT, Pa. Volunteers, corn.

part of the State, was organised in State street
and mustered into the service of the United
States, at three o'clock, this afternoon,by Capt.
Simmons, U. S. A. The following are the offi

Ix Town.—Capt. Eyster, of the the "Came
ron Guard," paid the city a flying visit this
morning on business connected with military
matters. His company are still encamped at
York, and all are represented to be in the best
possible spirits.
Luton Aaarvex of Trcoopa.—A body of vol
unteers numbering about sixteen hundred, from
Allegheny, Washington, Lawrence, Butler and
West Moreland counties, arrived here early
this morning, and are quartered in . the State
Capitol, the Lutheran Church and several of
our Hotels.

velunteered or who may hereafter volunteer
during the present war. Provided, That no
part of said sum of money shall be used until
the Court shall be satisfied that the same is
absolutely needed, and that when' said money
or any part of the same shall be so used, it
shall be disbursed under the directions and su
pervision of three disinterested persons to be
appointed for that purpose by the Court.

That we have passed upon a great 'number
of cases, many of which were of a trifling, frivo
lous character, and which we were obliged . to
return ignoramus from a want of the proper

fully upon the Court the adoption of some
efficient mode compelling witnesses to attend
upon the grand inquest hereafter. We have
also found cause to censure Justices of the
Peace for permitting so many of those trifling

inability to compel them to pay the costs in

BALTIMORE, April 24, 1861.
Baltimore is fast being evacuated, the road
from Baltimore to York is lined with carriages
conveying families north, exorbitant demands
are made by the livery stable keepers, but
every charge is promptly paid, such is the eag
erness of families to leave. The city is now
quiet, and it is believed that a force of 10,000
Nothern troops determined to go through would
not be attacked. The attack on the biassachu-
Setts regiment was made by a lot of young
cowardly vagabonds, who fled before the fire of
only a few muskets. There is an evident fear
pervading the respectable portion of the inhab
itants that the city will be shelled or burnt and
burnt to the ground.
The latest account from Washington report
that pending the arrival of the troops from
Annapolis painful feeling of -suspense existed
there. No communication was reciteved from
the North from Friday to Tuesday, but from
the South information was daily received of the
concentration of Virginia troops to attack the
Capital. The report that there were 14,000
Northern troops was confounded, the ,number
Including volunteers from the district and some
800-regulars did not exceed on yesterday morn-
ing 5;000.
