There is nothing stirring to-day, bit the pros . irct of the secession of Virginia gives great joy. Nothing has been beard from Virginia to day, and there is great anxiety to hear. The steamer R. Cagier, from Savannah, re ports having passed a steam tug on Sunday, with her smoke stack gone, off Cape Remain, bound South, probably the Yankee. The same day she spoke the steamer Baltic, off Charles- ton bar. The captain of the Baltic stated, in answer to a hail : "We take Anderson and his command to New York." The Harriet Lane was inside the bar, and both vessels had steam up. There was also a steamer inside, probably the Isabel. Captain Crocker reports that he saw Fort Sumter, but could perceive no breaches in the walls. The outside looked somewhat battered. When five miles away he heard firing, which was probably the salute fired by Anderson on leaving the fort. DE! 44. S .1;;C;k 1 / 1 W, Bopto,-) The Merchants raise money.—.Yetespaper ekes visited by Union Men.—A. T. Stewart takes the lead.— The killed and wounded in Fort Moultrie. The Seventh Regiment has received orders to proceed to Washington. They will leave on Friday. At a meetinm 's of the merchants held to-day, twelve merchants subscribed one hundred dol lars each on the spot. There is great excite ment here this afternoon. A crowd of over five thousand collected be fora the Express office, threatened violence if the American flag, was not displayed. It was soon flung out amidst tremendous cheers. A similar visit was then paid to the Day Book office with similar result, the editor barely es caping by the aid of police. The Daily News was then visited, the crowd having increased its numbers greatly. It is reported that A. F. Stewart has offered a mil lion dollars to aid the government. The Express of this evening says it has reli able information that forty-nine were killed anti one hundred and thirty wounded at Fort Moultrie. The Daily Yews put out the American flag. Most of the crowd then started for the New York Hotel, the headquarters of the Southern visitors. The Day Book having drawn in their flag, small crowds gathered about the office, but a posse of police wero.on the ground. The steamer Glasgow, from Liverpool on Zld inst., has arrived below. Her advices are an ticipated. W. 0. 1107:KOK. A pens Empbatic Union Declarations by Gower- Governor Dicks was waited on last night by Company F., the Governor Guards, at his qo• tel, who informed him that they come to sing the Star Spangled Banner with him. The Gov ernor expressed pleasure at the visit, and said he was too hoarse to join with them, but he would tell them that he was still under the Stars and Stripes. The Star %tangled Banner was then sung by fifty.voices, with fine effect. The Governor thanked the visitors for the courtesy, and said that he hoped that "Matpatriotie air would be song on all fitting occasions forever. The Union must be prcservccl. ' A voice exclaimed—" Governor, you have done your duty so far." The Govemor . replied, " Yes, and I intend to keep doing it." The visitors responded with one voice : "We will stand by you." Much enthusiasm was manifested. Witmorox, Arial I.6.—Tbe' Union feeling now prevailing here is intenss, and the few se cessionists have been overawed by the deter mined aspect of the people. A scheme to seize Fort Delaware was undoubtedly projected; but it has been frustrated by the action of the Gov ernment. A company bad been organized, and the arms were to be taken 'from the military academy to equip them. This movement was designed with, a double effect. It was. to get usstssion of the academy rifles, so that they could not be had by the people in a sudden emergency, and to arm an efficient company to carry out secession when the time to act should arrive. Our merchants are frowning down secession, by a determination to patronize no paper that does not give expression to Union sentiment:3. Senator Bayard Is now on a visit to Virginia, and his friends, who are suspected of secession sentiments are keeping quiet, the Union senti ments here being so unanimous as to convince them that there no hope for the success of any effort to , capture Fort Delaware. At a meeting of the Jackson Democratic Club, last night, resolutions were adopted ex pressing nutlinching devotion to the Govern ment, and a proposition was made to raise an Irish regiment,, to be tendered to President Lin coln for the defence of the country. 13osrozi, April 17. FROM WASHINGTON CITY The Secretary of War has just received the official document containing the first response of the volunteers of Massachuetts to the pro clamation of President Lincoln. A menti:er of the Virginia Convention tele graphs from Richmond that an ordinance of secession will pass that body, but that it tvill be decided to submit the ordinance to the.peo ple of Virginia for their ratification or rejec tion. Washington to day presents a decidedly-mili tary appearance. Many volunteers ate rapidly enrolling them selves and reporting to tha Department. These new recruits are yet without uniforms. The War Department is in receipt of various notifications to the effect that volunteer from Northern and Western States are moving to wards Washington rapilly. The Government regards it as treasonable for Northern manufacturers to sell arms to the seceders. All tho elderly men who aro exempt from militia duty arc to hold a meeting, and form a corps to defend the city. Latest From Virginia—She Refuses to Sc- Menu°Rti, April 17.-5 o'clock, r. The ordinance of secession has not yet been passed. The Convention is still in secret session. Nothing known for certain what the result will be. A private, dispatch has been received stating that the secession ordinance had been rejected by a majority of eleven, and that the Conven tion had adjourned sine GOVERNOR HICKS FOR THE UNION rIIILADELPIIIA, April 17-12 lldniglit Governor Hicks' patriotic declaration was re ceived hero with enthusiasm. Recruiting is progressing steadily. Enrolments in the city exceed five thousand more mu than is required to fill the quota of the city. At least ten thousand have already been ac cepted at Harrisburg. Many property owners have resolved to reduced the rents to families of volunteers, and have notified' them that no rent will be required during their absence. Tite Reinforcement or Fort Pickens. Walker, Secretary of War, I have to inform you, for general publicity, that on last night rtinforee wants were thrown into Fort Pickens, by the Government at 'Washington, in violation of the convention existing between that Gocerninc-nt and this Confederacy.
