of entertaining Mr. Lincoln at Trenton amount
ed to $2,000. Surely our Harrisburg charges
were cheap in comparison.
MAIL AGENT.--Mr. Cyrus Rutherford, of this
county, has been appointed a mail agent be
tween tid n s city and Philadelphia. He is a re
liable and competent man, and a good Repub
lican. His appointment will give general
sat isfaction.
ANOTHER SENATOR. PROMOTED.—We have 111-
more to the effect that Mr. Benson, Senator
from the Eleventh District, has been appointed
Paymaster in the United States army. Heis a
warthy and deserving man and we hope the
rumor may prove true
MR. ARM9TRON6'S LECTURS.—The lecture on
"Egypt," to be delivered by Wm. H. Arm
strong, Esq., in the House of Representatives,
this evening, will be free for all who choose to
attend. This lecture has been delivered in
various towns in the Northern section of the
State, and is spoken of in terms of the highest
commendation of the press. Mr. Armstrong
having traveled extensively in the old world,
is thoroughly convenient with his subject, and
will treat it in such a way as to please and in
struct his bearers. As no charge is made for
admission, we hope the eloquent lecturer will
be honored with a large and appreciative an
dienca.
ARREST BY THE MAYOR.—Last evening Mayor
Kepner dispersed a crowd of colored corner
loungers, at the State Capital Hotel. One of
the party exhibiting a mulish disposition, the
Mayor took charge of and conveyed him to the
lock-up. Every evening grops of corner loun
gers, white and colored, may be seen in various
prominent localities ; and Mayor Kepner is
entitled to the thanks of all good citizens for
his efforts to abate the intolerable nuisance.—
It is to be regretted that be is without a corps
of efficient officers, under his immediate super
vision and control. A law should be passed
giving him the appointment of at least six city
policemen, and we trust this will be done be
fore the session closes.
Tin Ilsnasw FASSOVZlL—According to an an
cient custom of the Israelites, established by
the command of Moses, the Hebrews began
their Passover on Sondarevening. This is the
biginning of the feasts and fasts, which will
continue at intervals for several weeks. Among
the ancient Israelites—and it is pretty general
ly observed by those of the present day—the
use of unleavened bread only is allowed. In
the earlier days of the religion it was the cus
tom for the priest to kill an unblemished lamb
:and sprinkle the lintels and the door posts with
its blood, for the history of the Bible teaches
that at a certain time the destroyingangel pass
ed and slew the first born of each house where
the custom was not observed. This will be one
of the most solemn of the fasts, and several
days of the season will be observed by a cessa
tion of all business affairs, and worship in the
churches.
THE NEW PENNSYLVANIA STAPLE-THE OIL
TRADE. —A gentleman has collected from vari
ous printed and private sources, some particu
lars in relation to the oil business in Western
Pennsylvania, which seem to indicate that the
product of ,this discovery will eventually take
its place as an important staple. There is no
doubt that much exaggeration has existed in
relation to the quantity of oil produced, and
that speculation has been actively at work, by
which some men have realized great profits,
while others have suffered great losses. But
this proneness to turn everything into a specu
lation has been shown when coal mines were
first worked, or wherever gold or pearl-bearing
muscles have been discovered. The *masses
need no especial stimulant to induce them to
take hold, but rush involuntarily, some, in
every instance, sure to lose. But it is not in
dividual profit we are now "considering, but
commercial results. They are shown to be
already quite remarkable ; for the number of
barrels of oil which came over the Sunbury
and Erie railroad to the latter city, during the
year 1860, is as follows, showing an extraordi
nary rapid increase of production

LI addition to this, the freight on engines,
pumps, supplies of all kinds, and passengers,
growing out of the rush of population to the
oil region, is expected to furnish quite an
equal amount of business and revenue. The
large quantity above referred to has been sup
plied almost exclusively from two localities—
namely, Tideoute, on the Allegheny river,
about fourteen miles below Irvine Station, and
'Titusville, on Oil Creek, about eighteen miles
from the station of Union Mills. From these
points it is principally hauled by teams to the
line of the road, although in the Summer sea
son much is boated from Tideoute up the river,
and much finds its way down stream from both
points to Pittsborg—the most, if not all, of
which will come to the railroad when suitable
branch roads, now in contemplation, shall be
constructed. At the points named the wells
are bored into the oil bearing rock from the
depth of seventy-five feet to three hundred
feet before striking the veins, and at each of
the said points, there are up to the present
time, about thirty wells in successful operation.
APPOINTMENT BY THE GOVERNOR.—The Gover
nor has appointed Hon. lILYSBI9 MERCUR to be
President Judge of the 13th judicial district,
in the place of the Hon. David Wilmot, elect
ed United States Senator.
THE CITY Ilosprrar, contained eight lodgers
last night, most of them arrested for drunken
ness and disorderly conduct. This morning
two or three paid their fines, and -the balance
were sent to the county reformatory institu
tion for thirty days. -
SMALL Pox IN TUE POOR HOUSE.—The Poor
House physician, Dr. Mish, informs us that the
small pox prevailed to some extent in that in
stitution several weeks ago, but that no cases:
have occurred recently. The house is now en
tirely free from the disease. -
CHANGE or LOCATION.—We invite attention to
the card of Mr. Parkhill, in another column,
announcing the removal of his Plumbing and
Brass Foundry to South street, opposite the
Bethel. -This is one of the best establishments
of the kind in the city, and we take pleasure
in commending it to the patronage of all who
want work done in Mr. Parkhill's lino of busi-
SHOOTING A.ITAIR.--A man named Frederick
Keenen, residing at Union Deposit in this
county, was arrested yesterday charged with
having shot Henry Blouck. It appears, that
Keeneu was recklessly handling - a loaded gun,
and although warned that the weapon contain
ed a full charge, he fired into a crowd of boys,
wounding Blouck so severely that he was con
fined to his room for some weeks. A hearing
took place before the Mayor, and Keenan en
tered.bail for:his appearance at the April term.
SINGULAR CASE.-A sudden death, under sin
gular circumstances, took place in the neigh
boring town of Hanover on. Saturday last. A
man named Jeremiah Sherman had been afflict.
ed for some days with a carbuncle or other in
flammatory tumor of the sitne'nature "on'his
chin, and applied som precipitate. On the eve
ning of Saturday he retired, complaining of
the pain, but nothing more. Between nine and
ten o'clock, however, he became alarmingly
ill, and continued to grow worse until about
four o'clik in the morning,,whe.ntae expired.
A Rocau CUSTOMER.—A countryman named
Francis Frick came to the city yesterday,
indulged freely in cheap whiskey, and
"splurged" extensively. He had in his posses
sion a two barreled pistol, which he handled in
a very reckless manner, and officer Garman,
fearing that the fellow would do serious in-
jury to somebody, took him in custody, and
conveyed him to the lock-up. When introduced
to the Mayor this morning he exhibited a very
contrite spirit, attributed his misconduct to
the tanglefoot he had imbibed, and promised
to conduct• himself with more propriety in his
future visits to the city. He paid his fine and
was discharged.
INFORMATION FOR TRH LADIES.-It may be in
teresting to our lady readers to learn that the
style of bonnets for the coming season contem
plates nothing smaller than those worn in the
past season. The new Paris shape is very dis
tingue, but it will disappoint some of the ladies
who are trying to introduce the fiat Marie Stu
art fronts. - The new style is worn very high,
close to the lower part of the face, and slopes
very much from the tip to the crown. Ruches
will be worn still, but not generally. The hair
will be worn in curls and in braids in the bon
nets, as was the fashion before ruches came in
vogue. They will, however, still be worn in
some of the most stylish bonnets,,, The trim
mings for the bonnets will be simple—lace and
small flowers, in clusters and in loops on the
top, or as nearly on top of the bonnet as it is
possible to get them. Fancy straws will be
very much worn this spring and summer. A
great many costly ones have been imported.—
The dress goods for the coming season are very
Chaste and beautiful in pattern. In silks and
bereges the ground colors for promenade are
various shades of gray, brown and green ; but
the gray seems the favorite color. English be
reges will soon be made in gored dresses, hav
ing one large flounce on the bottom of the
skirt. English Grenadines—a much more ele
gant and expensive fabric—will be made in
seven or eight flounces.
A MEETING OF TUD TRUSTEES of the Pennsylva
nia Female College, called for the purpose of
taking such action as might be deemed proper
by reason of the death of Rev. Beverley R.
Waugh, Principal of the College, was geld on
Monday the 25th inst., at 3 o'clock, P. M.—
Hamilton Alricks, Esq., Vice President in the
Chair.
After the object of the meeting had been
stated by the presiding officer, on motion, R.
A. Lamberton, A. 0. Hiester, J. H. Berrybill,
Wm. Dock, and E. M. Pollock were appointed
a Committee to report appropriate resolutions.
Whereupon, The Committee reported the fol
lowing preamble and resolutions which an mo
tion of A. B. Hamilton and Major M'Glough
lin, were unanimously adopted:
Wnzases, We have learned with sorrow of
the death of our friend the Rev. Beverly R.
Waugh, Principal of the Pennsylvania Female
College at Harrisburg, and as it is becoming
that we should give expression to the loss thus
sustained by our College and our community;
therefore,
Resolved 1. That by the decease of its Princi
pal the College has been deprived of one who,
in an eminent degree, possessed those qualifi
cations which so well him for the moral
and intellectual training of those who were en
trusted to his care.

can be had. Whole sets of jewelry, formerly
sold for a small fortune, can be secured for the

ful what a change has taken place in prices.
This is the age of gold. Everything you touch
turns into gold as it did to Tantalus of old. It
is very difficult to tell which is servant on the
street—Bridget or your wife—for Bridget wears
just as showy a necklace, just as shining ear
rings, just as beautiful rings, and, with the ex
ception of her plebian gait and freckled face,
is just as handsome a woman. Then it is quite
as difficult to tell who is master—John who sits
on the bOx of the coach, or yourself sitting in
side. John sports a gold watch with an im
mense chain and fob. He wears three magni
cent rings on his fingers, and when not in
charge of the horses, John swings iv gole
headed cane; Surely John puts on as many
airs as his master, and dresses as well—how can
a stranger tell the difference between John and
his master ? What has wrought this great
change in the way of ornament? Has money
become . more plentiful, or gold cheaper ? We
will give,the solution as furnished by the Scientific
American.' There is a new metallic alloy exten
sively used in this country as a substitute for gold.
It is nothing more than simple brass, yet in
appearance and specific gravity it is like gold.
It is a French discovery, and ,is called, by the
French, gold oriede. It is manufactured to a
large extent in Waterbury,'Oonn. It bears a
ye. y close resemblance to gold in color,density
and fineness of grain, so close that it deceives
every one but practical dealers and experts.
The fineness of the grain in this alloy gives to
those objects of art composed of it.a delicacy
and a purity of detail that cannot be obtained
from bronze. The alloy is essentially ductile
and mailable, and can be cast, rolled, drawn,
stamped, chased, beaten into a powder or
leaves, or treated in any other way the artist
may desire. The discovery of this .new alloy
is really wonderful, and its use will have a
tendency to place within the reach of all the
useful, ornamental and higher products of art.
An immense number and amount of articles
are manufactured out of this alloy and sold
South and West, and none but excellent judged
can tell it from gold.

largo crowd of people last night, and the dis
tribution of forty elegant gifts among the audi
ence, at the dose of the exhibition, caused a
great sensation. Mr. Wentz has been very
liberally patronized by our citizens, and he has
mardfested.his appreciation of iitby a generous
free-will offering of beautiful gifts in return,
in addition to giving a full equivalent for the
money received in the way of unrivalled pano
ramic views. Mr. Wentz says he "makes it
pay," and we presume this to be the case,
judging from the immense crowds that throng
the hall every night. Among the articles to
be distributed this evening are a splendid gold
clasp family Bible, an elegant silver cake bee ,
ket, .a splendid hunting case silver watch, a
silver goblet, a heavy gold bracelet, various
articles of jewelry for ladies and gentlemen,
amounting in the aggregate to seventy dollars,
and about thirty dollars worth of valuable
books—in all forty different gifts. So far as
regards the pictures exhibited, they are gems
of art which no lover of the beautiful should
