HARRISBURG
Tuesday Afternoon, March 12 1861.
Tun RAILROADS.—Forty-eight of the railroad
companies of Pennsylvania, during the year
1860, have made full reports to the Auditor
General of their condition. Twenty-six com
panies refused to report. Of the passenger
corporations; nine made returns, in compliance
with the law, and fourteen neglected or re
fused.

AT WORK AGA:IN.—The Legislature met at
three o'clock this afternoon, with a pretty full
attendance in both Houses. The members will
now proceed vigorously and uninterruptedly
to finish the work of the session, which will
probably,be accomplished by the last of next
month, 'or early in May.
GONE TO. WASHINGTON. olt
f Mr. James Williams,
orthis city, left for Washington this morning,
to officiate as a Messenger in the War Depart
ment. The gay James was always "wide
awake" diming the last campaign, and did effect
ive service for the party in the way of march
ing and burning coal oil.
G erm MUDS —'fhe Good Will, boys are
fixing up for their Fair, which commences to
morrow night. The large room on the second
floor of Exchange Hall is being elegantly fitted
up and decorated for the occasion. The object
being a commendable one, we wish the boys
abundant success, The Fair is under the mtn
agement of ladies who will grace the hall with
their presence nightly daring its continuance.
FUNERAL Or Ma. COLDER.—The remains of
Mr. John Colder, whose death we annonced
yesterday, were taken to the railroad this
morning and conveyed to Huntingdon, for in
terment in the cemetery at that place. On
the arrival of the cars at Huntingdon a large
concourse of people assembled at the depot to
participate in the funeral obsequies ; and pay
the last sad tribute of respect to the memory
of a man who was universally esteemed in that
community.
I===l
Mum Witten Mss•rraos.—The citizens of the
various wards of the city, irrespective of party,
will meet at the following named places this
(Tuesday) evening at seven o'clock, for the pur
pose of nominating candidates for the various
municipal offices to be filled at the coming
election: First ward at the Black Horse tavern
in Paxton street ; second ward at the Union
House in Market street; third' ward at the
Franklin House in Walnut street ; fourth ward
at the hotel of Wm. P. Hughes in Canal street;
fifth ward at the hotel of John Raymond.

/mama SUDDEN DEATH.—Another old citi
zen, Mrs. Hannah Weetfall, died suddenly.yes
terday afternoon. We leirn that on Saturday
she was about apparently in the enjoyment of
her usual health, having attended -market on
the morning of:that day. The unusually large
number of sudden deaths occurring in our com
munity-this season keep constantlysaid forci
bly reminding us of the uncertain of life,
and the importance of proper preparation for
the dread summons which, sooner or later,
awaits all men.
The Mucci Mstrnsos.—The ward meetings
this evening to nominate candidates for muni
eipal offices, irrespective of party, should be
participated in by all citizens who prefer the
gocal , gbveTment and prosperity of the city to
the success.of it-political party. Much mischief
might be done by the election of incompetent
officers ; and the only way to avoid such a re
sult is for the people to assemble together,
select intelligent,3sagacims and prudent men,
and then concentrate their votes upon and
elect them, leaving political considerations out
of the question. Will they do it? If so, let
them rally to the meetings in their respective
wards this evening.
Domenic Tnousrats.—Some of the police offi
cers inform us that it is astonishing, as well as
humiliating, to witness the number of family
troubles they are called upon to adjust. Be
tween many husbands and wives there are die
graceful quarrels, in which both parties are
often to blame. Several cases have been
brought to our notice recently, in which the
husbands were hard-working, industrious men,
while their wives, who should be help-mates,
were doing everything but fulfilling their part
of the marital vows. Such cases are too hu
miliating to chronicle, had we the disposition
to Invade the private circle and give publicity
to what the parties themselves manifest but
little disposition to clothe with its sanctity.
Pnoreor Tag BlBDS.—Every inseetiverons
bird which frequents the premises of a gardener,
farmer or horticulturist, is worth its weight-in
geld to him, and should be valued accordingly.
A few years ago our Legislature wisely passel
a law for their protection; but in many neigh
borliOods it is more honored in the breach than
in the observance. The late Washington Ir
ving was a great friend to birds, and would not,
under any circumstances, permit one of them
to bernolested upon his premises. The conse
quence was that every grove, every tree aid
every shaded bower was vocal with their music;
and the delight he experienced in listening to
to their songs, in beholding them build their
nests and rear their young, more than repaid
him for his watchful care. Besides, the birds
are the farmers best friends—destroying whole
armies of bugs and flies and other insect pests,
which, but for their help, would soon decimate
our crops of fruit and grain and grass. Pro
tect the birds, and they will repay you ten fold
for the little care bestowed upon them. Should
cold or snow drive them to your door-yard,
after they have been tempted from their south
ern homes, feed them, and care for them as
you would feed and care for your fowls or other
inhabitants of the barn yard. An agricultural
friend, who bas learned to value these little
annual visitors, says he would consider it no
gryater offence for a person to come on to his
premises and kill a turkey, than one of the
little birds.

Tan Commune or Aratamentszrrs for the Fair
of the Good Will Fire Company will meet this
evening at seven o'clock—the ladies at the
residence of Wm. K. Verbeke, and the gentle
men at the engine-I:mdse.
THE GOODTEKPI6I9 meet this evening for
the purpose of making arrangements to attend
the - fib:4oM of Mrs. Hannah Westfall,,of which

Cease.—Thi s forenoon a victim of tangle
f°qi 1 7 1 4 3 i 3 . name we did not learn, was:cap
tured by the Chief and caged in the retreat for
sedates. The fellOw'sspirit-ual manifestations
'Vera of.so violent a nature that it was found
necessary to put iron bracelets upon him. He
had evidently imbibed a large quantity of
fighting .
Wm FORMBY, Esq., who did effective work
for the Republican party last summer as po=
litical editor of the Tsyscateprr, was in the city
yesterday, and graced our sanctum with his
presence. Mr. FORNEY . is one of the largest
hearted men living, and has few equals as .a
ready, vigorous and finished writer. He• is an
honor to the party and au ornament to the
fraternity. May he be appropriately rewarded.
Tinan WARD Couscams.s.—Mr. Wm. Colder
is the retiring . Councilman in the third ward.
Without any desire to dictate to the citizens of
that ward, we think they could not do better
than retain the services of• Mr. Colder. He
has made an efficient and prudent member of
the board, and the interests not only of the
third Ward, but of the entire city, would be
subserved by his re-election.
DEMAND FOR DWkLLINGS.—We have been
credibly informed that quite a number of the
mechanics employed by the Pennsylvania Rail
road Company in the shops at Parkes
burg and Columbia, and now about to be trans
ferred the new works erected in this city,
are compelled to.leave their families behind
them, in consequence of the fact that there are
no houses here for their accommodation. The
company will be compelled to erect dwellings for
these families unless our citizens make provi
sion for them. Where do our capitalists in
vest their funds? Is there no public spirit
among us?
OIL FOR. THE Taman= WATEMS.-it has been
alleged that the oil wells of Pennsylvania pro
duce about eighty-five million gallons of oil
per annum. Considering the effect of oil on
turbulent waters, and the admitted position of
Pennsylvania as having the power to conduce
more than any other State to the termination
of the present troubles, the Sunday Ames says,
it is evidently her duty to go into the proposed
conference with Kentucky with a determination
to pour all her oleaginous material on the
vexed waves of political strife, stop them from
casting up any more abolition or dist:talon mire
and dirt, and calm them down to an unruffled
mirror, reflecting only love and sunshine.
PIACING OBSTRUCTIONS ON A P.AIIItOAD.-4.18W
days ago a young Irishman giving the name of
Daniel Karl, was arrested on a charge of placing
irons across the track of the Penusylvanialtail
road, a mile or two above the Coatesville sta
tion. By the evidence it appeared that a hand
car, containing some employees of the road,
was on its way from Coatesville to Parkesburg,
and at a point about a mile above the former
place, an iron chain was observed on the track,
so placed that it must inevitably have thrown
off any train so unfortunate as to have come in
contact with it. The hand car was stopped,
the obstruction removed, and the car again
started but a few yards in advance again bad
to stop to remove, this time, a piece of iron
railing, which was ingeniously placed over the
track. Near this place the accused was found.
It is very difficult to assign a motive sufficient
to account for this act, which would have re
sulted so disastrously but for its timely dis
covery. He was committed to the Chester
county prison to await a. trial.
Ceara FOlt A "Rnx•RonND."--Somebody who
professes to know, says that the disease of the
finger or toe commonly called a run-round, may
be easily cured by a remedy so simple that
persons who have not seen it tried are generally
incredulous as to its efficacy. "The first symp
toms of the complaint are heat, pain, and red
ness at the top of the nail. The inflammation, if
not checked, will soon go round the whole of
the nail, causing intense pain, accompanied by
festering, and ending in the loss of the nail.
To prevent all this, as soon as the first symp
toms appear lay the finger flat on the table
and scratch the nail all over with a penknife
or pair of scissors. This excoriation must be
done first crossways, and then lenghthways, so
as to thoroughly scratch up the whole warfare
of the nail, leaving it rough and white.—
This little operation does not . give the'slightest
pain,-and is a certain and speedy cure." A.
still more simple remedy,.aud one we have
never known to fail, is to dip the finger three
or four times in boiling water, on the first ap
pearance of the disease.

Grters Vnora.—A fruit so hardy, ao sure,
and requiring so little cultivation and expense,
surely not a homestead in our land need be
without this luxury. Let there be an arbor in
every man's yard, and 'Then the season comes
it will seldom fail to be loaded with the most
delicious fruit. There is a cheap way to do
this, within the reach of every man : First, se
lect a place in your yard where you want your
arbor, and then dig a trench about one and a
half feet deep and two feet wide, and fill
with good rich dirt. Second, go around to
your neighbors who have choice selections of
grapes—none will refuse to give you a few
slips—they will. be glad to see your enterprise,
and willaay that it is a move in the right di
rection. If they are men of some experience
in the business, it would be well to ask for
advice how to proceed. Plant your slips in
the ground in a slanting position, one bud out
and another just under the surface of the earth.
There should be at least two more in the
ground. Follow the above directions, reader,
nd in a few years you will have grapo vines
bylhe ddzenand•grapes by the bushel.

W. W. Brown, Esq.
Among the many prominent gentlemen for
the succession to a seat in the United States
Senate, made vacant by the resignation of Ron.
Simon Cameron, we hear the name of Col. W.
W. Brown, of Bellefonte, favorably mentioned
in various localities of the State. For many
years Col. Brown has been editor - of the Centre
Democrat, in which capacity he has labored
with a zeal and a devotion for Republican print
ciples unsurpassed by any man in - the Coinmon
wealth: United to his zeal and devotion, he
has Added weight to his labors by the exercise
of 'an intellect of the highest order, until he
has been mainly instrumental in changing the
centre of Pennsylvania from a blind adherence to
pseudo Democracy to that of an enthusiastic
deesolon to the measures and men of the Re
publican organization.
We take pleasure in responding to the men
tioning of the names of such men as Col.
Brown in connection with a, high and honor
able position, even if their own purpose is not
achieved in the realization of a manly ambi
tion. We do this, because it is to such men
that' principles of stern justice are indebted for
success, and to whom we must hereafter look
for the vindication of liberty, the protection of
labor, and the establishment of the immutable
laws of justice in all sections of our now dis
tracted Union. As a man of ability and energy
Mr. grown will rank with most of those already
mentioned for the succession to. the vacant
Senato - rship, and he wouldilelieted,,certainly
excel many in his fearless devotion .to the .in
terests of Pennsylvania and the Union. F.

Dian.—ln San Frandsen, California ' on the
23d of January, in the 31st year of his age,
HOBERT B. WALLACE, eldest BOIL of Wm. Q.
Wallace, Esq., of this city.
The deceased had been for some years con
nected with the Sheriff's department and was a
well known and popular citizen of that platv.
Although not a native of this city, he was for
many years—from youth to early manhood—
a resident in our midst, and will be remember
ed by a large number of our citizens who es
teemed him for his many engaging qualities of
mind and heart. Mr. Wallace was cut off in
the flower of his years and usefulness—just too
as he was enjoying the society of the eminent
persons whose confidence and friendship he hard
Rained, in his far off home, by the suavity of
his manners and the integrity of his character.
'those friends, as well as those of earlier years,
will ever entertain the most enthusiastic regard
for his memory. Remarkable for his passion
(de attachment to his friends, he was met only
to be loved, lost only to be greatly mourned,
by the hosts of sympathetic hearts which, by
this quality, he entwined around his own.
With morn, =nice and rawer stamped upon
his manly brow, he entered the perilous mazes
of the Pacific metropolis, where hundreds of
young.men of rare promise have sunk under
the effect of dissipation and despondency, but he
was enabled to live an ornament to socie!y and
to die letiving an example worthy to be emu
latyl by all. He was a loving, kind and affec
tionate husband, son and brother, ancl.bia..iosa
will keenly felt. His bereaved young wife
who in California's clime endearingly cared
for him and smoothed his dying pillow, and
his' distressed parents, brothers and sisters,
have sincerely the sympathy of this community
in this their hour of deep felt sorrow.
