HARRISBURG
ednesday Afternoon, February 21,1861.
THE "Tiara."—We learn that this ferocious
animal is open for a fight nightly in Harrisburg
during the sitting of the Legislature.
LOOK OUT Fou TuEM.—A large amount of
bills, purporting to be of the Beverly Bank,
Beverly, New Jersey, are now in circulation.
There is no such Bank, so beware of them. A
chatter for such a Bank exists, but as the laws
of the State have not been complied with, the
issue of bills is illegal and irresponsible.
WORKINGMEN'S Iderrnio.—The officers of the
late Workingmen's meeting, and the members
of the various ward committees, are requested
to meet in the Sheriff's office, adjoining the
Court room, to-morrow evening at, seven
o'clock, for the transaction of special business
relating to a more thorough and permanent or
ganization of the Workingmen's party.
ZonavEs.—We learn that about fifty young
men belonging to the Hope Fire Company have
enrolled themselves as members of the new
military Zonave corps about to be organized in
Harrisburg. From present indications, the
movement will be successful. Our own opin
ion is that a company or regiment similar to
the National Guard of Philadelphia, would be
more creditable to the city.
Ciatizaons Consusurrox.—The employees of
the Harrisburg Car Factory, following the ex
ample of their worthy Superintendent, Mr.
Hildrup, have contributed, in the aggregate,
the sum of TWENTY DOLLARS for the relief of
the suffering and destitute people of Kansas.
Considering that the mechanics employed in
this establishment are generally poormen, and
need all the money they earn by "the sweat of
their brow," the contribution is a very gen
erous one.
A MAN FOUND DEAD.-111.r. Thomas Neal, of
Lower Chanceford township, York county, was
found dead in the tail race at Grove's mill re
cently. Mr Neal was seen on his way home
with a horse and buggy, after dark on Saturday
night, and in crossing the bridge over the race,
it is supposed the animal became frightened
and was unfortunately thrown from the side of
it into the water, a distance of some ten or
twelve feet, where he was found dead on the
following morning, and the horse seriously in
jured. The deceased was a man of family, and
about forty years of age.
CARRYING TIM WAR INTO AFRICA.-At a
late hour last night a white man, whose name
we did not learn, while passing through Tan
ner's alley—a locality where colored rowdies
most do congregate—was assaulted by two of
this class. Being armed with a formidable
weapon in the shape of a dirk knife, the man
turned upon his assailants, severely wounding
one of them, and putting the other to flight.
Tanner's alley, as well as "Bases Cove" gener
ally, is a dangerous locality for white men,
especially strangers, to visit late at night.
There are several dens there, regularly fre
quented by colored rowdies armed with razors,
"waiting for something to turn up" in their
line of business, and taking advantage of every
opportunity to assault and plunder white men
who venture among them.
PETROLEUM PRTRAELTION FOE THE JUDGMENT
DAT.-A number of wicked editors are much
distressed about the theory lately advanced by
philosophers that Tophet is near by, and that
a forerunner to its coming is the breaking out
of innumerable oil wells in various sections of
the country. One of our frightened cotempo
raries says that the latest and- most feasible
theory growing out of the sudden appearance
of oil in such immense quantities in regions
where it could not have existed but a compare..
tively short space of time, is, " that the inter
nal fires of the earth known to exist are mak
ing their way to the surface, where, in accord
awe with the prophecy, 'the elements are to
melt with fervent heat.' The caloric from
these subterranean fires has just reached the
coal strata, and the oil which forms the igneous
portion of that carbonic compound is driven
from it, and forced by superineumbent pressure
to occupy &sures and the softer formations of
the earth below, until relieved by apertures
from the surface. Those living in the coal re
gions, and nearest Tophet, of course, find oil
first. Watch and pray."

TES WILLIAMSPORT TRAORDY.-DEATH OP
THE kluanzaas..—On Monday we published
an account of the murder, at Williamsport,
of an Irish woman, by her husband, Barney
Helen. The deed was committed two Weeks
ago, and on Sunday lust the remains of
the murdered woman were found in an out..
house connected with Helen's shanty, where
they had been buried. When the news was
communicated to Helen that the body of his
wife bad been found, he attempted to commit
suicide by cutting his throat, but the wound
was promptly sewed up, and the physician
thought he would recover. The prisoner linger
ed in a suffering condition until yesterday
morning, when he died, thus saving the coun
ty the expense of trying and executing him.—
The supposition is that the human monster
murdered his wife while she was lying in bed
stupid from the effects of whiskey, as both
were in the habit of drinking to excess. Her
throat was cut from ear to ear and her skull
broken in several places. From some express
ions of Helen previous to his death, it seems
that he had been twice married, and murdered
his first wife also. He was a tailor by trade, and
a first-class workman, but could not refrain
from excessive indulgence in whiskey, and
failed to provide for his family. He leaves
four small children, who are now in the poor
house of Lycoming county. May He who
"tempers the wind to the shorn lamb" watch
over and protect the helpless little ones thus
suddenly orphaned by the brutal deed of a
drunken father.

THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD &mpg at Parkes •

workmen are preparing to remove to this city.

GOING TO WASHINGTON.—The Legislature will
probably adjourn on Friday until the middle
of next week, to afford members an opportuni
ty of visiting Washington and witnessing the
ceremonies incident to the inauguration of
President Lincoln. Most of the Republican
members, and a large number of citizens, in
tend making an excursion to the Federal Capi

MISFORTUNE OF A TAX COLLECTOR.-A few
nights ago while Mr. Robert A. Laird, tax col
lector of Porter township, Huntingdon county;
was traveling in a carriage from Petersburg to
Alexandria, his horse took fright, ran off and
broke loose from the carriage, pulling - him out
over the dasher and dragging him some two or
three rods on the frozen, road before he got
the animal stopped. He lost his overcoat, and
a pocket book containing twelve hundred and
eighty-five dollars in bank bills. The pocket
book was found the next day; but the bills
were taken out. Mr. Laird offers a reward of
three hundred dollars for the money.
'FEBRUARY.—In all our winter time, and es
pecially in this month, we have now and then
days, like the one we are now enjoying, when
the cold and boisterous North wind moderates
his tone, and the "sweet South" breathes
gently as on a summer's day. They are An
gels of Hope, reminding us of the spring time
and the new life that chall come again from
the death around us :
“Bland as the morning breath of June
The South-west breezes play ;
And, through tie bars, the sinter noon
Seems warm as summer's day.
The snow-plumed Angel , of the North
Has dropped hls icy spear ;
Again the mossy earth looks forth,
Again the streams gush elear.”
°sown= Scuoms.—The mortuary statistics
of various cities exhibit, as one great cause of
disease and premature death, the crowding of
so many children into one room for hours with
out intermission, in the public schools, where
Many of the class rooms are filled to their ut
most capacity, the children drinking in each
other's breath and taking disease with every
inhalation. Their bodies become enfeebled in
this poisoned atmosphere, and the system re
laxed. In this condition, after school hours,
they go directly out into the streets. In the
winter season, the difference in the temperature
of the open air and the, school apartments is so
great that local congestion is often occasioned,
in the form of what is often called - "oatehing
cold." Bronchitis, Pneumonia, Sro., follow,
frequently ending in death: - It is certain that
some of our schools are too crowded as well as
badly ventilated, and that the children remain
too long in them at one time, breathing impure
air. The population of the city increases much
faster than the capacity and number of the
school houses.

ANNUAL REPORT OF TEE HARRISBURG BIBLE
BOOTETY.—We publish below the annual report
of the Board of Managers of the Harrisburg
Bible Society, presented at the anniversary
meeting held on Sunday evening last :
The Board of Managers of the Harrisburg
Bible Society, in presenting their annual report,
regret that they are not able to furnish a state
ment that would indicate an increasing interer
est in the excellent cause of Bible distribution.
From the statement of the Treasurer it appears
that only $125 57 were contributed during the
past year, by our entire community, for the
Bible cause, including home and foreign distri
bution. The Managers of the Society are con
vinced, however, tbat the meagreness of this
contribution is not to be taken as a fair exponent
of the feelings of our church members and citi
zens generally in regard to this cause, but ra
ther aa a proof of the inefficiency of the plan
hitherto adopted for eliciting their contribu
tions. The method heretofore penned has
failed to afford our citizens generally an annual
opportunity of contributing to this cause. And
the plan suggested for several years by the So
ciety at its annual meetings, viz : that the pas
tors of our churches should each, in his own
way, have special collections taken up annually
among his own people for this cause, does not
seem to have commended itself to their favor
—to be feasible. So the Board has determined
for the present year, to adopt the suggestion
of the Dauphin County Bible Society at its late
convention in Millersburg, viz : to request each
of the pastors of the city to furnish the Secre
tary of our Society with the names of two la
dim] of his church as collectors ; that the city
be divided into as many districts as there are
committees appointed ; that these committees
meet together on the day after the delivery of
the annual discourse before the Society, distrib
ute among themselves the districts of the city
as thus divided, and proceed at once to call at
every house and solicit contributions in behalf
of the Bible Society. •
Most of the ministers have already consented
to this arrangement, and have furnished the Se
cretary with the names of ladies belonging to
their churches who are willing to engage In
this good work. The rest of the ministerial
brethren are herewith respectfully requested to
co-operate in like manner by handing in such
names at the close of the public exercises this
evening.
[This arrangement was at once approved by
the Society, and committees were appointed to
canvass the various districts of the city. The
names of the ladies comprising these commit•
tees, and the districts assigned them, we pub.
lished in the Tsroassern yesterday afternoon.]
The Managers herewith bespeak for these 'la
dies a kind and cordial reception, and confi
dently trust that this method will insure a
large increase in the revenues of our Society,
reaching, as it necessarily will, many who would
not otherwise have in opportunity personally
presented to them of contributing to their
cause.
Those persons who desire to become regular
members of the Society by the annual contri
bution of $1 00, can mention this fact to the
committee that calls upon them, and all who
are now members of the Society, are requested
to make their annual payment to these com
mittees, taking credit for the same at once
upon the collettors' books, which will be de
posited in the keeping of the Treasurer of the
fieoiety.
UNITED STATES &mum —Among the gentle
men named to succeed Gen. Cameron in the
United States Senate, is Wm. H. Armstrong,
Esq., of Lycoming county. He would fill the
position with credit to himself and honor to
the State.
THE Fran RArre.—A few days ego the first
rafts of lumber passed this place for the mar
kets below. The river is now free from ice and
in good order for transporting lumber, but the
weather is yet too cold to do much at this
business.
Hon. EDGAR Cowen, recently elected to the
United States Senate by the Legislature of
Pennsylvania, was in the city yesterday en
route for Washington, to be present at the ex
tra session of the Senate to be convened on
Tuesday next. He was accompanied to Wash
ington by several of our citizens.

PROOF RILADING.—An aspiring young poet

Instead of which, by an oversight of the proo

"See timings martyr with his shirt on tire."

ACOIDENTAL DEATHEL—On Wednesday last Mr.
Evan Wiley, of York county, died from the ef
fects of a wound received in his saw mill,—
While engaged at work the saw caught his
foot and so lacerated it as to cause mortifica
tion. A little daughter of Kr. Daniel Hall, of
the same county, recently swallowed the heads
of some 'Lucifer matches, and died in a short
time afterwards. Parents should be careful to
keep matches out of the way of their children.
Two Cows GONE MAD. —During the recent
prevalence of mad dogs, two cows; belonging
to Mr. M'Cord and Mr. Eversole, were bitten
and became mad. Immediately on showing
symptoms of madness they were confined in the
stables of their owners. The sufferings of the
•animals seemed to be very great, and their cries
could be heard at a considerable distance. After
a short time both were killed by their owners,
to prevent accidents and put an end to their
sufferings. It is also reported that two per
sons were bitten by mad dogs in the neighbor
hood of Paxton church.
THE HANOVER SELVES BAND will give a sec
and concert at Brant's Hall this evening. They
are clever gentlemen and excellent musicians,
and should be patronized by all who love good
music. We never met with a finer looking
or better country band.

A SICBTOH BY Osa wao Knows.—" Caroline,
have you been shopping to-day?" said a lady as
she took a package from the hand of a young
man, who had just entered a neatly furnished
parlor, and displayed a gorgeous and beautiful
moire antiqe shawl. "Yes, cousin, and lam
half angry with you for not accompanying
me." She tried to look angry bat could not.
"See what a beautiful shawl." "Where did
you get it ?" "At Urich & Bowman's, corner
of Front and Market streets; I make all my
Purchases there for indeedanever sem:La-better
assortment of tgoods out of New York and
Philadelphia, and then the salesmen are so
obliging and attentive that one can not but be
pleased. I seen many things I would like to
have, but mother only gave me fifty dollars
when I went out. I will put on my prettiest
smile to-night and ask her for fifty more. Coz,
did you ever know me to ask for money and
not get it ?"
Stamm—Reader, the young lady received
the fifty dollars, and the larger portion was
spent next day at Ifrich & Bowman's. What
she said about the store is true, and mark me,
she got the worth of her money. Persons who
are about making their spring purchases of dry
goods, would do well to give them a call, not
only because they are patronized by the ladies,
but from the fact that their goods are cheap.
