a rich musical treat by the Harmonic Society,
may be expected. Citizens and strangers who
wish to spend an evening pleasantly and profit
ably, should attend this meeting.
THE NATIONAL GUARD REGINENT, of Philadel
phia, will leave for Harrisburg in a special
train, on Thursday midnight. At least two
hundred men, fully equipped, will participate
in the excursion. 'lbis is one of the most splen-
Old and spirited military organizations in -the
Union, and their participation in the parade
will give additional eclat to the demonstration.
A PATRIOTIC SUGORSTION.—It is suggested that
while the old soldiers are running up the "Stars
and Stripes" to the dome of the Capitol on
Friday afternoon, all the bands of music in . at
tendance assemble together and unite In play
ing the "Star Spangled Banner." This would
have a fine effect, and prove a very interesting
feature of the ceremonics. We submit the
suggestion to the consideration of the Com
mittee of Arrangements.
AN EXCUBSION.—The Silver Band of Hano
ver, York county, accompanied by a number
of other citizens of that place, design making
an excursion to the State Capital on Tuesday,
the 26th of this month. The members of the
Band have made arrangements to give two
concerts in Brant's Hall during their stay here.
We think we may safely promiso them a cor
dial welcome and liberal patronage.
=I
Frau COMPANY Coirma.—We learn by a gen
tleman just from Williamsport, that the meni
hers of the Rescue Fire Company of that place
are making arrangements to visit this city on
Friday and participate in the parade. Should
they come, the German Silver Band will ac

house the machines of all visiting companies,
a resolution to that effect having been adopted
by the convention.
Tam REPASS CORNET BAND, of Williamsport,
engaged to play for the Citizen Fire Company,
next Friday, will arrive here on Thursday
afternoon, at 12.80. They will be met at the

daysburg, engaged by the . Washington Hose
Company, expect to arrive here the same after
noon at five o'clock, and will receive similar
attention.
MORI 'FLAG RAISINGEL-A grand military and
civic parade is to come off at Pottsville on the
22nd, on the occasion of raising an American
Flag over the Court House. Extensive prepa
rations have been made, and our Pottsville
friends anticipate a large turnout and hand
some display. A similar demonstration will
take place in Philadelphia at sunrise on Friday
morning, when the "stars and stripes" are to
be unfurled from the steeple of Independence
Hall. President Lincoln has accepted an invita
tion to participate in the ceremonies, after
which -he will be escorted to the depot and take
the cars for this city. •
~~~
A Sninunir NIINBIEL—On Friday afternoon
we intend issuing a double sheet of the DAILY
AIEGRAPIE, containing a fall and lively account
of the Presidential reception, and the ceremo
nies incident to the raising of the Flag on the
Capitol. The report will embrace the names of
all military companies and societies on parade,
with a description of their uniforms and rega
lias ; the welcome address to President Lincoln
and his reply ; the orationiof Senator Palmer ;
Washington's Farewell Address, etcetera. We
shall have two or three special reporters on
duty during the day, and our readers may look
for a detailed, accurate and spicy report.—
Members and others wishing extra copies of
our mammoth double sheet on that day should
leave their orders at the office between now and
Thursday evening.
FASHIONABLY Dusts= CHILDIIIiN.—The absurd
fashion of exposing children of tender years to
the keen out-door air with but half the neces
sary protection which their little armsland legs
require, is so prevalent as to require a word of
comment. It is true, fond mother, that your
chubby three-year old boy is as finely modeled
as the Cupid of Canova ; but the pleasure you
derive in knowing that other people admire,
the graceful roundness of those limbs, will ne
ver compensate you for the anguish and watch-•
ings which you will experience when he is at
tached with croup or the terrible scarlet fever.
Strong men find it impossible to spend half
their time in the heated houses of civilized so
ciety, and then go out of doors with thinly
clad extremities, without catching all the colds
and coughs that flesh is heir to. No one but a
highlander, used to the sky for a canopy and
the heather for a bed, can go bare-legged with
impunity in these northern latitudes and
changeful seasons. Yet we daily see little boys
and girls dressed in the shortest clothes, with
knees and arms reddened and chapped by the
cold, Hundreds of innocents yearly die from
this cause alone. Will not all mothers who
read this, heed the warning
Mona littrurtarr REPORTED. —Three compa
nies of the first regiment, Clumbersburg dis
trict, and four companies of the first regiment,
Lancaster district, have reported to Major Ge
neral Kelm, and will be on parade next Friday.
From indications the military fcirce will not be
less than four or five thousand.
OFFICIAL Joshua.Taggart, one
of the Philadelphia detective police, was here
yesterday to obtain a requisition from Governor
Curtin upon the
,Governor of Ohio, for the sur
render of alugitive from justice, named Fried
man, indicted in Philadelphia for fraud and
false pretence.
Denorrve Ovalness COMING.—We learn that
Mr. .Thomas W. Gorman, of Baltimore, and
Messrs. Lamon and Bartholomew, of Philadel
phia, members of the detective police forte,
will visit this city next Friday. These officers,
aided by the police of thii city, will, prevent
the "knucks" from operating to any extent.
At the same time we advise strangers tot to
carry large sums of money about them. Those
who come here with well' filled pocket-books
should deposit them in the safes of the hotels.
A number of persons were victimized on Inau
guration day, one man to the amount of eighty
dollars. Let all who read this item act upon
the caution we give when they come to the
city the present week.
NORTHERN CENTRAT o RAELROAD.—The Locofoco
member of the House from this county has in
troduced a bill to compel the Northern Central
Railroad Company to fence their track iri Dau
phin county. We do not know what motive
prompted this action on the part of Dr. Heck,
but the proposition is so monstrously unjust
that it is not likely to meet with much favor.
We venture to say that if the facts were known
they Ivould, place the originator of the bill in
a very contemptible position. If there was no
personal malice in the matter, why did riot Dr.
Heck include the other railroads 'pasSing
through - our county ? We have no idea that
the Legislature will commit an act of such
gross injustice as to pass the bill alluded to.
WASHINGTON'S BIRTH DAT.—As the most wel
come and sacred day in our national history is
near at hand, we are rejoiced to see'that ar•
tenements are being made throughout the
entire country to celebrate that day—the twen
ty-second of February—with more than usual
demonstfations of affection and loyalty. This
is as it should be. Let us all unite in giving
to the illustrious dead the honor which is due
to the great services he has rendered to our
country and to the world. All over the civil
ised world, the name of Washington is held in
veneration, as a great benefactor of the human
race, the friend of human liberty, the founder
of the only free Republic on the. face of the
earth, the father of our own prosperous, and,
heretofore, -happy Union. May Providence
grant that the return of this day may awaken
remembrances of the past, whose hallowed as
sociations shall tend to open all eyes to the
magnitude of the interests which are now int-.
ptrilled. All henor, devotion; and lime do the
bath-day of our ever-revered and illustrious
Washington, who, under the guidanceOf that
Almighty Power in vrhom he trusted; led our
armies to victory, and Our fathers to the eras
thin.of a system of government which has been
our glory and the admiratiop of the world.
May the dark clouds which threaten our peace
be dispelled through the influence of the pa
triotic recollections which cluster around the
coming birth-day of the man who was "first
in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of
his countrymen." ,
VANDIVER Vs. TEM PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD
COKPANY.—This was an action on the case by .
Sarah Vandever, the widow of John Vandever,
deceased, against the Pennsylvania Railroad
Company, for an alleged injury inflicted by the
defendants' agents upon the plaintiff's hus
band, which resulted in causing his death. On
the sixth of December 1867, John Vandever
took his seat in the car of the Pennsylvania
Railroad Company, as a passenger from Phila
delphia to Parkesburg, where he resided. Soon
after leaving West Philadelphia, the conductor
and the State agent applied to him for his
ticket, which he failed to produce, alleging
that he'had paid 'his - fare. They told him it
would be necessary to produce his ticket, or
pay his fare, or that they would be obliged to
put him off the train. They told him to search
for his ticket and proceeded to collect the
tickets from other passengere. After some time
they returned„ and -he being still unable to
produce his ticket, and refusing to pay his fare,
they proceeded to remove him from, the train.
He was under the influence of liqudr, but not
so much as not to know what he was doing.
The train was stopped at Paschallafttation, and
was standing still when theY' removed him.
The State agent, the conductor and Yandever
passed out at the rear end of the car, on the.
platform; and the conductor got off upon the
ground first. Vandever went down the steps
backwards, holding by the railing on each side.
He had one foot'on the ground and the other
on the lower step of the platform ; still holding
on by the railing, the State agent broke loose
his hold, and in io doing, Yandever fell and
rolled over on his back. The State agent and
the conduchn immediately raised hhirto his
feet. His hat had blown down the bank. They
showed him where it had gone, and he started
after it. He walked part way down the bank,
then his speed increased, and he fell• head
foremost among some large stones at the foot
just as the train passed out of sight. Not long
afterwards, he was found lying at the foot of
the bank ; taken to a stable across the railroad,
and left there till next morning ; w as
_ then
removed to Mr. l3onsall's house, where he
remained till the following morning, and was
then taken home. No physician was called till
he reached home. He died about a week
afterwards. The case was tried before Judge
Haines, of Chester county, a year ago, when
the plaintiff recovered $1,734 damages. The
Railroad Company appealed to the Supreme
Court, where the judgment was reversed, on
the ground of a want of a distinckdireetion to
the jury as to the 2 measnre of damages, and a
new trial awarded. Upon this trial the jury
gave a verdict of $2,500 demagog,.
FLAG ON TEM HOPE HNGINIPHOUSE.—On Friday
morning at eight o'clock "a new American Flag
will be unfurled on the cupola of the Hope
Engine House, with appropriate ceremonies.—
An oration will be delivered on the occasion by
a member of the company. An invitation is
to be extended to the members of the ftre de
partment generally to participate in the cere
monies. The Hummelstown Bind will furnish
music and play the national airs.
COHN= LOIINGI4O.—The Chief of Police last
evening arrested an individual from the rural
districts' for corner lounging and improper con
duct. The Chief informs us that he intends
to enforce the ordinance against all the "nice
young men" who make a practice of blocka
ding the corners of our principal thoroughfares
every evening, to the annoyance of lady pedes
trians, whose feelings they frequently outrage
by indulgence in, obscene language. If the
Chief abates this long:complained of nuisance,
he will , receive the thanks of the community
in general.
Tina Bias oat Ssoassioa—We find in a South
ern paper the following striking paragraph,
which proves conclusively that the prophet
Joel was in favor of secession :
"The 20th verse of the second chapter of the
Book of Joel reads as follows : But I will re
move far off from you the Northern army, and
will drive him into a land barren and desolate
with his face toward the. East Sea, and his
hinder part toward the utmost sea.' "
It may be a comfort to those who are alarm.
ed by this, to be assured that Jeremiah is on
our side. For in the 12th chapter and 19th
verse he says : " The cities of the South shall
be shut up, and none shall open them." Jere
miah being one of the greater prophetsrand
Joel only one of the minor prophets, the advan
tage is clearly with us.
Ma. ED/TOR :—As appeal after appeal for help
from the suffering people of Kansas come be
fore us, should .not each one inquire, what
can Ido toward feeding the hungry, clothing
the naked,
, and relieving the , sick?' Am I
:faithful before Gad 'lry thus folding my-haniiiti
and saying to my distressed - brethren, "be ye
clothed, fed and healed?" Who among us can
conscientiously say , "the Lord being my help.
er, rhave done what I could to relieve the suf
fering?" It is said, with truthfulness, "we have
poor enough to take care of in our own city ;"
but, like the blessed rays of the sun, which
give light to all, so unrestrained charity can
gladden the whole world. Let us then take
courage, and give to ail as opportunity pre
sents, remembering that the Great Giver is ever
giving and forgiving the best of His erring
creatures. Bacon= KINDNESS.
AMIDST the contending elements of political
strife, it becomes us as a civilized people to pay
proper respect to our personal appearance. In
view of this, we might say that it is not gener
ally knoWn that President Ltecom intends pur
chasing his inaugural suit of clothes at Unica
& BOWMAN'S. This intention on the part of the
President may be from the fact that they have
a large stock of Cloths, Cassimeres and Vestings
