NEW PAGSRNGER CAR.—A new and beautiful
passenger car, built by the Harrisburg Car Com
pany, was recently placed upon the Sunbury
and Erie Railroad, between Sunbury and Lock
Haven. It is a splendid and substantial piece
of workmanship, equal in. every respect to tit
first class cars of eastern manufacture.
LOLA Itorsz.—Since the death of this unfor
tunate woman, the correspondents of various
papers are publishing marvellous incidents and
reminiscences of her career. Why not let the
memoty of the erring eccontric woman rest?
What she did out of the usual course, cannot
have any exemplary benefit upon the living ;
and it is ungenerous to herald it when she is
gone, to amuse the idle and thoughtless. She
was generous and confiding, and had no espe 7
cial animosities in the pursuit of which she cre
ated unhappiness. • There is enough among the
existing for comment and for reformation
Let the dead rest.

MENTAL ININITEDENON.—Every man and
every woman is brought.up from the cradle to
the grave with a bias. The mind is Dever sent
into the world's life unfettered. It carries with
it the heavy chain of habit. The politics of
the father are nsnally the politics of the son
the religious character of the household is
the seed of - many more households of like
faith. It is a strong and admirable mind indeed,
which, nursed in error, has the heroism and
sourage to attempt its own emancipation. It
requires more courage to think differently from
the multitude than to fight them. The first
hero, therefore, was not be who made the first
conquest, but he T em uttered the first doubt.
EDITORIAL CorrYliC ox.—" The Annual Meet
ing of the Pennsylvania Editorial Union will
be held in Fulton Hall, in the city of Lancas
ter, on Wednesday,.tbe 20th of February next,
at two o'clock, P.M. Important business will
be transacted, and it is hoped that there will
be a full attendance of the members, and Edi
tors generally throughout the State. An elec-
tion will be held for officers for the ensuing
year." This notice comes to us in circular
form from the President of the Union, Mr.
McMichael, of Philadelphia. We would 'Sug
gest an amendment to the constitution of the
society, excluding from membership all editors
who are not practical printers.
THE METHODIST REVIVAL Mumma in the Lo
cust street clinrch, • which commenced two
weeks ago, is still in progress, and will be con
tinued during the present week. Rev. Dr. Ro
binson, of Brooklyn, one of the most successful
revivalists we have ever met with, has con
sented to remain and preach every night. The
meetings yesterday afternoon and last evening
were largely attended and exceedingly interest
ing. The altar was crowded with rioting men
and women, who had been induced to seek re
ligion, and some of them received the blessing.
At the close of the evening services several
persons were admitted to probationary church
membership.

11).—The Pittsburg Chronicle says that a rescue
of the slave Lucy; recently arrested An Cleve
land, and returned to her master, in Wheeling,
was contemplated at Lima, but prevented
through the promptness of Conductor CleHand,
who escaped with the train from the station
before the higher law men could get aboard.
As the train approached the station, a force
of one hundred men, armed with weapons of
every kind, was drawn up at either side of the
track. At sight of this array, the little force
of deputies having Lucy in custody, set their
teeth firmly, and drew their revolvers, evident
ly prepared to defend their position to the ut
most, and to retain possession. of the woman
at all hazards.. The train drew continually
nearer ; the signal for down brakes" was
heard, speed began to slacken, and at length
the engine slowly moved past the platform and
the belligerent army, when suddenly, without
any warning, a full head of steam was let on,
and instantly the train once more ran under
full headway, and past the threatening multi
tude. The train reached Wellsville without
anything further - of interest occurring, and
the woman was at once forwarded to her master
Tax Boom Quortou.-'—A HarrisbUrg corres
pondent of one of the Philadelpia Sunday pa
pers, who seems to be thoroughly posted up in
all that transpires here, especially in legislative
circles, gives the following rich and racy de.
scription of the contest between the Williams
port and Jersey Shore boom-a-laddies, relative
to blockading the Susquehanna at those points.
From present indications there will be a fierce
fight on this question, and an 'abundance of
weighty arguments advanced on both sides :
The citizens of Jersey Shore, some ten .miles
above the Everlasting . State of Williamsport,
are extremely anxious to erect a "Boom ' at
their locality, while those interested in a simi
lar "institution" already stationed at "Wil
liamsport, are equally desirous of enjoying
without competition the lucrative pickings of
the business. The Williamsport people have
sent forth a loud howl in the shape of 'Ali Ap
peal," in which they "show up the figures" of
of some three hundred millions of feet of lum
ber that is sawed at the various mills adjacent
to the boom, but they have sadly neglected to
state that from fifteen to twenty millions of
feet are annually'realized from what is termed
the "all Sorts," or, in plain Saxon, the steal
ings of stray logs•that float into their net and
are worked up before the unfortunate wood
chopper at "head waters" is apprised of his
loss. These stealings constitute the gist of
the matter and bone of contention—the value
of the "all sorts" being estimated at not lees
than eight hundred/haus/Ind dollars annually. No
wonder the Jersey Shore people, under the tu
telage of that ancient and highly honorable
"public functionary," John A. Gamble, should
weep with tears in their eyes at the annual loss
to their internal trade and commerce, and we
have ample cause to fear if the Williamsport
men do not "cave" and make a "divy" of this
rich plunder, that "Jersey Shore" will imitate
the Mississippians at Vicksburg, and erect a
battery to lay the entire rafting and lumber
business under contribution. It is plain, there
fore, for the sake of "Union, " in this case, that
the everlasting boom-a-ladies must secede
' from their avaricious position, and be content
with a n share, else an intestine war will be car
ried on right under the very nose of our Legis
lature, and "all sorts of a fight ensue, which
in the end may eat and drink us out of house
and home, besides depleting the "calf-skins"
of the belligerents, much to the satisfaction of
the "Third House," who look on this choleric
rise in the Susquehanna as sure to bring some
of the "log-gerheads" fairly within the jurisdic
lien of that illuatrioaa body.

SUDDEN DEATH.—We regret to announce the
sudden death of Mr. Michael Cook, one of the
best engineers on the Pennsylvania Railroad.
He was about yesterday, apparently in the en
joyment otitis usual good health. 'After retir
ing to bed last night he had an attack of heart
disease, or rush of blood to the head, and died
about one o'clock. The deceased was an Indus
triong man, highly esteemed by the Railroad
Company and his fellow employees, and re
spectc by all who knew him. He leases a
family to mourn his loss, who have the sincere
sympathies of the entire community in the se
vere affliction which has thus suddenly fallen
upon them.
A Gant.—Rev. Mr. Stockton, Chaplain of the
House of Itepresentatives,at Washingtott,in his
address on the recent fast day, after describing
in glowing language, our glorious national in
heritanCe, exclaimed :
"And shall such a heritage as this be sun
dered and destroyed ? Clasp thy broken staff
with shame, 0 flag of stars, superseded and
dishonored by thy pitiful Palmetto! Start
from thine eyrie, thou eagle of the morning I
shake from thy pinions the dews of the night,
and relume thy vision in the splendor of the
sunrise, lest the rattlesnake, crawling up the
cliff, shall steal an thy slumbers and strike thee
unawares."
Nobly uttered! A thousand thanks to the
man who thus fearlessly transfixes,by the burn
ing darts of a vivid elognence, the cold blooded
treason that dragged its slimy length under
the very shadow of the Capitol! 0 for such
a spirit in all those whOna the nation has called
to defend her honor and rights 1 For want of
this,in the guardians of the Republic, the rep
tiles yet may rule A PATRIOT.
INTERESTING LIQUOR CASB. - -We find reported
in the Carlisle papers the particulars of a liquor
case tried in the Court of that county, at the
late term, while excited considerable interest
Elliott & Co. are liquor dealers in Philadelphia,
and supplied WM. Noaker, a hotel keeper in
Carlisle, with liquors to order. In the spring
of 1860, Dr. Cox, of Ohio, somewhat celebrated
for his examinations•and lectures in regard to
adulterated liquors, visited Carlisle, and was
employed by Mr. Noaker to test the quality of
certain liquors alleged to have been purchased
from Elliott & Co. The analyses of these li
quors, as published by Dr. Cox, show that they
were adultered with copper, zinc, sulphuric
acid, pepper, &c. On this ground Mr: Noaker
refused to pay the bill of Elliott & Co., and
suit was brought to recover. The defendant
offered in evidence the deposition of Dr. Cox,
giving the result of his examinations, to show
that the liquors were not pyre as represented;
while the plaintiffs produced testimony to show,
by practical chemists, that the tests used by
Dr. Cox were not reliable. The case was ably
argued on both sides, and given to the jury
underthe charge of the Court. The jury found
I a verdict for the plaintiffs for $4OB 74.
How TO ENJOY Yonassm—There is a great
deal of enjoyment about a sleigh ride. Jump
into a bijou or a cutter, and if you have a head-
strong horse give him full rein. Away you
go—snow balls and slush flying full in your
face from the horse's feet, and the sleigh every
now ,and then grating harshly over . the pave
ment, in a manner well calculated to _make
you set your teeth together after the stYle of
heavy tragedy men when they desire to express
a sort of fiendish delight. Now you run the
gauntlet of a legion of small and mischievous
boys. Small and mischievous boys are sure to
yell "my ride ;" and, a negative answer to
small and mischievous boys, is sure to call
down on your devoted head a shower of snow
balls. Thereupon your horse tales fright, and
for some time you find it difficult to steer clear
of lamp posts, side-walks and trees. But
then there is such a novelty about it. True,
you can't find time to say one word to the
companion at your side, your attention being
wholly engrossed in the management of your
head-strong horse. Your arms have a disloca
ted sort of feeling consequent upon holding
your horse in,. your fingers tingle with the cold,
your face seems to have - been flayed by the
wind—but then it's so jolly to have a sleigh
ride for the paltry consideration of two dollars
an hour ! . It's very "phunny."

early stages of the disease, recourse should at once be

the Cold, Cough, or Irritation of the Throat be ever so

Woon's HAIR RESTORATIVE.—Among all
preparations for the hair that have been introduced as
infallible, none has ever given the sattsfactien or gained
the popularity that Prof. Wood's Rath Restorativ snow
has. ills Restorative has passed the ordeal of innumer
able fashionable toilets, and the ladies, wherever they
have tested it, pronounce it a peerless article. They
find, wherever they have tested it, pronounce it a peer
less article. They Cod, where the hair is thinned, that
it creates a fresh growth—that it fully restores the ve
getative power of the roots on the denuded places, and
causes the Ores to shoot forth anew—that It dissolves
and removes dandruff prevents grayness, restores the
hair to Its original color when grayness has actually su
pervened, gives a rich lustre, imparts the softness and
flexibility of silk to the hair, and keeps it always lurri
ant, healthy and in full vigor.—"N. Y. Tribune.'

PROF. WOOD'S HAIR RESTORATIVE.—This Re
storative for making the hair grow, stopping its falling
out, and restoring gray hair to its original color, is be
coming celebrated. All the quack nostrums are giving
way before it. Three lburths of the mixtures for re
storing and beautifying the hair, do it more injury than
good. They burn it up—destroy the life of its roots—
make tha hair fall off, and produce premature baldness.
But Prof. Wood's Restorative may be relied upon as con
taining nothing which can in any manner be injurious to
the hair, while its success in accomplishing what it pre
tends to do has been verified in hundreds of cases. We
advise gray beads, and heads getting bald—ail who wish
to save their wool or obtain a new stock, to get a bottle
of Wood's Restorative —N. Y. Democrat.
