HARRISBURG, PA
Erlday Afternoon, December 28, 1860.
SEE a dvertisement " Ho, for the Holidays."
Tee RINOOLD ARTILLERY, Of Mifflin, mamba
j o g about forty men, will visit Harrisburg on
the third Tuesday of January, to participate in
the inauguration parade. This is said to be a
handsomely equipped and well drilled company.
SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE.-It seems to be gen
erally conceded that our good looking friend,
Ur. DAvv, of Venango, will be the choice of,
the Republican party for Speaker of the House. -
lie is well fitted for the position, and will make
a courteous, dignified and popular officer.
GOtitENOR CURTIN.—For the information of
office-hunters, and others, we deem it proper
to state that the Governor elect will not visit
the Capital of the State until a few days prior
to the time fixed by law for his inauguration.
We have no definite knowledge of his present
whereabouts,

SKATING.—Tho ponds in this vicinity are
covered with smooth ice, affording excellent
skating, and the juveniles are improving the
holiday school vacation to indulge in this ex
hilarating and healthful sport. The present
beautiful moonlight nights are favorable for
persons whose business prevents them from
skating during the day.
DESERTER ARRESTED.—A few days ago as a
company , of soldiers were passing over the Le
high Talley Railroad, en route for Carlisle, a
difficulty arose between an officer and a private
which resulted in the officer being knocked
down. The private being fearful of the pun
ishment which would inevitably follow this
outrage on his superior, jumped off the train.
He was consequently arrested and taken to
the Carlisle military station.

ME REVIVAL llzzruca in the Vine Street
Methodist Church, commenced some two weeks
ago, is still in progress. The nightly meetings
attract large crowds of young people, and there
seems to be an increase of religious zeal and
interest. For a few days past the pastor of
the congregation has been assisted by Rev. Mr.
Ross, of York, whose sermons are highly spoken
of by those who have had the pleasure of hear
ing them. There will be preaching by Mr.
Ross, this evening at the usual hour.

Taa Faransirrs BALL comes off next Monday
evening in Brant's Hall, which is being magnifi
cently decorated for the occasion. This will be
among the largest, gayest and most recherche
parties of the season, and strangers who wish
to see the youth and beauty of the Capital
City "in all their glory," should attend. We
learn that tickets are in great demand, and our
friends from abroad who design participating in
the ball should secure them at once.
EVIOMB.—Mr. J. Roland, an aged and respect
able citizen of Perry county, recently committed
suicide by cutting his throat with a knife. He
was laboring under mental hallucination, and
imagined that he was coming to want, whilst
his circumstances were quite comfortable. His
health was bad, and we learn that the physi
clan whom he bad consulted a few days before
his death, gives it as his opinion that, had he
not taken his own life, he would have died a
natural death in about a month.

Ter WEIR or PRAYER.--In response to the
suggestion of the Missionaries of the Presbyte
rian Board at Lodiana, in India, that the se
cond week in January should annually be ob
served as a week of prayer for the conversion
of the world, arrangements have been made by
the Pastors' Association of this city, for daily
public services, the meetings to be held alter
nately in the various Protestant Churches, com
mencing on Monday the 7th, and ending on
Sunday the 18th. The discourses and exercises
on this occasion will be unusually interesting,
and the meetings should be largely attended by
citizens of all denominations who feel an in
terest in the spread of the Gospel and the con
version of the world.
COMPLINENTAIIY.-At a late military festival
it Pittsburg, among the regular toasts offered
was one complimentary of our clever friend
Gen. Williams, of this city, as follows :
The health of Brigadier General Williams.
Weave for Lim laurels as bright as ever decked
a warrior's brow, its richest gems the gratitude
and affection of his comrades.
The sentiment was responded to by General
who paid an elegant and well-merited
compliment to the toasted gentleman, referring
to his military accomplishments, and his gal
lant services on the tented field during the pro
tracted and bloody war with Mexico. General
Williams is talked of in connection with the
adjutant Generalship of this State, and no
niois competent man could be selected for that
Position. His appointment by Governor Curtin
would give entire satisfaction to the Republic
ans and be heartily endorsed throughout the
State by men of all political parties.
ARRIVALS. —THE SCRAMBLE FOR OFFICE.-
Members of the Legislature, candidates for of-,
Vice, and other strangers, continue to arrive by
e very Railroad train, and our hotels are rapid
ly tiling up. Applicants for official positions
in the Legislature, from Chief Clerk down to
pester, are here in swarms, and the "irrepres
sible conflict" among them goes bravely on, day
and night, without intermission. Members
ere besieged in their private rooms at hotels,
button-holed on the streets, and chased around
the Capitol, by these zealous place-hunters,
who follow them like shadows, and cling to
them with leech-like tenacity, crying "office!
ofice!" There are scores of applicants for
every position, great and small. Of course many
of them are bound to be disappointed, and go
borne with heavy hearts and light pockets.
"Bich" is political life ! We hope the Immo
ceseful candidates will bear defeat philosophi
cally, and console themselves with the hope of
"better luck next time."
BEFORE THE MATOR.-A weary tramper from
Lebanon, named John Kroner, was before the
Mayor this morning on a charge of vagrancy,
having passed the night in the lockup He
told the old story, "out of money and no
work," and was discharged. An old offender,
Jack Hegins, was up for drunkenness and dis
orderly conduct. Not having slept off his
drunk, Jack was remanded to the lock-np for
a further hearing.

"To THE VICTORS BELONQ THE SPOILF."-Thii
should be the motto of the Republican party,
and we hope to see it carried out by the Legis
lature in the dispensation of patronage. Last
winter the sons of two or three Locofocos were
provided for, to the exclusion of the sous of
poor and deserving Republicans. If this game
is played over again the present winter, there
will be some "howling" done in the Republican
camp. We make allusion to this matter thus
early, in the hope that "a word to the wise will
be sufficient." The victors are entitled to the
spoils, and should have them.
DIPTHBRIA. —This disease has prevailed to
some extent among the children of our city for
two weeks past, but thanks to the science and
skill of our physicians, it is not attended with
the terrible fatality which marks its progress
elsewhere. To our knowledge but one case
has resulted fatally, and the probability is that
in this instance medical aid was not summoned
in the preliminary stages of the disease. When
parents find their children complaining of sore
throat, they should send for a physician imme
diately for the disease, once seated, is very dif
ffcult to manage, and generally baffles the skill
of the best medical men.
SPEAKER OP THE SENATE.—So far as we are
familiar with the sentiments of Senators, there
seems to be a general disposition to re elect
Hon. Roma M. PALMER, of Schuylkill county,
to the Speakership of that body. There are
few abler men in the Senate, or in the State,
than Mr. Palmer, and none better qualified for
the position of presiding officer of an intelligent
and dignified legislative body. A sound law
yer, an experienced parliamentarian, a high
toned and courteous gentleman, he would dim
charge the duties of Speaker in such a way as
to command respect and confidence, and win
golden opinions from all his Senatorial associ
ates. From present indications he will be the
unanimous choice of the Republican caucus,
and our political friends will do themselves
honor by the selection.
A SAD Inamorr.—While passing along east
State street, the other evening, in company
with a friend, we met a half-clad boy crying
bitterly. Stopping to ascertain the cause of
his troubles, the lad stated—his words inter
mingled with piteous sobs—that his mother
had been sick for three or four days, and his
rather coming home that evening, and finding
supper not ready, through her inability to pre
pare it, commenced cursing and swearing at
her in a most shameful manner. Through ut
ter prostration and fright she was unable to
answer him, when the human brute struck her
violently on the face. At sight of this cruel
outrage the little son, with true manliness,
rushed out of the house in search of a protector
for his mother. There is no epithet in the en
glish language that can properly express our
abhorrence of such unnatural conduct. The
man was drunk, of course, for no husband in
his sober senses would be poltroon enough to
lay his hands in violence upon the wife he had
sworn to cherish and protect. Such a fellow
ought to be held up to public scorn, but
we suppress his name for the sake of his wife
and children. In these days when cheap and
poisoned liquors abound, how quickly men can
be transformed into demons !
THE NATIONAL Farr Des.—We learn that
some action was taken at the late meeting of
the Pastors' Association, of this city, relative
to the observance of Friday, the fourth of Jan
uary, as a day of "humiliation, fasting and
prayer," in accordance with the recommenda
tion of President Buchanan. They decided to
hold a general Union Prayer Meeting in the
New School Presbyterian Church, at three
o'clock in the afternoon of that day ; leaving
the Pastors of the various congregations to
make such arrangements for morning and
evening exercises in.their respective churches
as they might deem expedient. We presume
there will be public worship and appropriate
sermons in most of the churches. Whether
there Rill be a suspension of business, and a
general obs&vauce of the day by our citizens,
we are not now prepared to announce. While
condemning the insincerity and hypocrisy of
the imbecile old traitor who issued the procla
mation, we have no doubt that an honest and
earnest compliance with its recommendations
would result beneficially, for the prayers of
righteous men availeth much ; and the Book
teaches us that righteousness exalteth a nation,
while sin is a reproach to any people. In view,
therefore, of the present deplorable condition
of affairs, and the dangers which threaten us
as a people, brought about by the most profli
gate and corrupt rulers that ever cursed this or
any other country, let the day appointed for
"humiliation, fasting and prayer," be reli
giously observed ; and let the patriotic masses
of our hitherto highly favored land unite in a
simultaneous and earnest petition to the God
of Nations to throw His protecting arms around
this blood-bought Temple of Civil and Religious
Freedom, and guard it from the assaults of the.
madmen and traitors who are now plotting its
overthrow. In all ages of the world, nations
that acknowledged the slighest allegiance to
the Bing of kings, have humbled themselves
in penitence, fasting and prayer, in seasons of
impending calamity ; and if ever, since the
trying days of the Revolution, it was proper
for the people of this country to do so, it is now,
when the success and even the perpetuity of
the grandest government the world ever saw,
is trembling in the hands of weak, imbecile and
impotent rulers, who are either designedly
abetting treason, or do not realise She terrible
responsibilities resting upon them. We would
therefore suggest a general and stri.ct compli
ance with the Presidential recommends Mon, and
the earnest prayers of all good men fo; r the per
petuity of this Union, and the presery ation of
our civil and religious institutions.
Pennovlvania ;Dallv Zelegrap4, fribau afternoon, ;December 29, 186 U.
ARREST OF FORGERS AND RORDRRS.—One Pat
rick Brett, and his wife Margaret, were arrest
ed to-day, charged with passing forged checks
at the stoles of Messrs. Epply and Urich &
Cowperthwait; fh this city, several days ago.—
The former purported to be signed by Simon
Cameron, and the latter by John B. Simons
On searching the house of Brett, a portion of
the goods obtained on the checks, together
with articles stolen from the store of Urich &
Cowperthwait, were found concealed in a chaff
bed. The parties had a hearing before one of
our Aldermen, and were committed to prison
to await a trial. We received information of
their arrest just before going to press, and have
not time to give full particulars of the affair
MEETING OP THE HARRISBURG AND LANCASTER
RAILROAD COMPANY.-A meeting of the stock
holders of this Company was held in Philadel
phia yesterday, to take action on the acceptance
or rejection of the contract for a more permanent
lease of their Road to the Pennsylvania Rail
road Company. There was a large attendance
of share holders. By instruction of the Chair
man the roll was called, in order to ascertain if
a majority of the stock was represented. This
operation entailed a great expenditure of time.
It was finally ascertained that there were 15,-
490 shares represented out of 21,742, the whole
number of shares. This being more than a
quorum of the stock, the meeting proceeded to
business. Mr. Baker, the President of the
Company, read the contract made with the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company for the renew
al of the lease of the Harrisburg and Lancas
ter Railroad to the Pennsylvania Railroad. ; —
The substance of the contract is that the organ;
ization of the Harrisburg Company shall be
maintained, and the lease be made for nine
hundred and ninety-nine years ; the Pennsyl
vania Railroad Company maintaining the road
and paying the interest on the funded debt,
and seven per cent. per annum on the stock.—
As the cost of the Harrisburg Railroad is some
$95,000 greater than the amount represented
by the existing number of shares, the Harris
burg Railroad Company is to be allowed to is
sue nineteen hundred shares of new stock, thus,
making the number of shares equal the cost of
the work, and on this increased capital the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company will pay seven
per cent., which is equal to about seven and
six -tenths, per cent. per annum, on the present
number of shares. The new stock to be issued
is a fraction less than one to eleven. The Frofits•l
since the last dividend in October are to be
divided among stockholders; and the dividspd
periods, hereafter, are to be in January and
July, instead of April and October. Attached
to the contract was a resolution authorizing the
Board of Directors to consummate the contract
and the lease to the Pennsyvania Railroad Com
pany. A motion was made that the resolution
be adopted. After a protracted and animated
discussion, the vote was taken viva voce, on the
ratification of the contract, and it was almost
unanimously adopted. Several gentlemen ob
jected to taking the vote in this way, and
Mr. Thomas S. Smith called for a stock vote.—
The Secretary stated his belief that under the
charter of the company a stock vote was riot
necessary where there was a clear majority of'.
stock represented at..the meeting. The chair
man announced that the question was ,decided ,
in the affirmative. There being much objection
to a viva voce vote in settlement of the question,
a stock vote was called and ordered. The ma
jority in favor of ratifying the contract was
about ten thousand shares. The Pennsylvania
Central Company will now take control of the
Harrisburg and Lattaster road, causing an en
tire change of programme, and the dismissal
of the Conductors and other employees of the
last named company.

ENORMOUS EERINESS FOR WIZ NEW YORK MERCHANT.—..
We are happy to inform our fel ow-citizaus that mere Is
one place in our city where the p-1 sician, apothecary,
and country merchant, can go and purctiase pure Wines
and Liquors, as pure a" imported, and of the best qualty:
We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this
merchant'a extensive bosiueas, although it will well re
pay any stranger or citizen to visit Uciolpho Wolfe's ex
tensive Warehouse, Nos. Fe. 10 and Pt Beaver street,
and Nos. 17, 19 and 21, Markettleld street His stock of
Schnapps on band ready for shipment could not have
been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some
ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1836 to 1866 ; and ten
thousand oases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wine,
Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Real,
some very old and equal to any in this country. He also
had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wine,
casks, under Custom House key, ready for bottling. Mr.
wolfs's sales of Schnapps last year amounted to one
hewn. d and eighty thoasand dozen, and we hope int , s
than two years be may be equal y.succeseful wan his
Brrndies and Wines.
DR. G. F. BIGELOW,
Boston
His business merits the patronage of every lover of his
species. Private families who eish pure Wines and
i..iquors for medical use should send their ord.rs direct
to Mr. Wolfe, until every Apothecary in the land mace
up their miude to discard the poisoners stuff irom their
shelves, and replace it with Wolfe's pure WiNim and
LIQUORS.
We understand Mr. Wolfe, for the accommodation of
small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases of
Wines and Liquors. Such a man, and such a merchant,
zhould be sustained apinit his tens of th , usands of op
ponents In the United Status, who sell nothing but imita
Lions, ruinous alike to health and human happiness.
