tween the cars at Mechanicsburg, on "Wednes
day of last week, and considerably injured, has
so far recovered as to allow of his removal to
Chambershurg, where he resides.
CITY PROPERTY AT PUBLIC SALE. —A few
weeks ago the property of the late Airs. Bard,
on Third street above Locust, was offered at
public sale, and struck down to . Abraham
Freaner, Esq., he being the highestbidder.—
"Uncle Abe," however, failed to come to time,
and consequently the property is again in the
market. It will be disposed of at public
auction at the European Hotel this evening.
SERIOUS ACOIDENT.-A few days ago while
two sons of Mr. Korea Powel, of Fisherville,
aged twelve and eighteen 3 ears, were cutting
wood, the axe of the eldest slipped and cut off
cue of the feet of his little brother. The force
of the blow was such that it entirely severed
the foot from the ankle. The amputated EMI;
was dressed by Dr. Nonamaker, and the lad is
now doing well.

Comraminsn.—The affair alluded to in our
last issue, which, according to rumor, was like
ly to culminate in a street rencontre between a
high-spirited young man and an old psalm-sing
ing hypocrite who insulted a female friend of
the former, has been " compromised"—upon
what terms our informant did not learn. The
probability is that the weighty apology of the of
fender was satisfactory, and that no further de_
velopments will be made. " Socht nix."
TEE WIDE-AWAKES AND TM INAUGURATION.-
The State Capital Guard, of this city, a neatly
equipped Wide-Awake company, will shortly
extend a general invitation to their Wide• Awake
brethren throughout the State to visit Harris
burg on the third Tuesday of January and par
ticipate in the parade and ceremonies incident
to the inauguration of Governor CURTIN. SEv
eral clubs have already resolved to do so, and
we hope to see a vast army Of equipped torch
bearers here on that occasion—the men <who
did the heavy work of the late campaigns, and
to whom Governor CUETIN is mainly indebted
for his triumphant election.

MIESIONAIIY &MM.-A series of interest
ing meetings will take place in the Locust Street
Methodist Church next Sunday. In the morn
ing, at the usual hour, Rev. Dr. Durbin, one
of the "big guns" of Methodism, will preach
a Missionary sermon, and a rich moral and
intellectual treat may be anticipated. In the
afternoon at three o'clock the anniversary of
the Missionary Sunday School will he celebra
ted, the exercises to consist of appropriate ad
dresses, music by the children, &c. All who
can make it suit to attend this interesting
meeting should do so. In the evening several
addresses will be delivered on the subject of Do
mestic and Foreign Missions, and the meeting
will no doubt be a pleasant and profitable one.

A Home DESULATED.—The diptheria, or putrid
sore throat, now prevails to a considerable ex
tent in Easton. Mr. George W. Dingier, of
that place, recently lost all his children—three
in number—in quick succession, who fell vie.

a series of three days the deeply afflicted pa
rents were robbed of all their " household
jewels," and on Thursday last followed the
remains of their three little ones to the ceme•

scourge—this demon of the nursery—which
bas desolated so many homes in various sec
tions of, the State the past season, may not
visit our city. It is now ravaging some
portions of the neighboring county of York,
and many families have lost from one to three
children. The disease seems to baffle the skill
of the best physicians

Claw SHOP SIGN. —Last evening, daring the
Progress of a reportorial tour, we passed a
drinking "saloon," and discovered a man lying
prostrate on the pavement, with his head cut
and bleeding. In the course of a few minutes a
crowd of persons collected, among the number
a stranger, in response to whose anxious in
quiry, some one remarked that "the grog sell
er's sign had fallen down." Notwithstanding
the trifling and unfeeling manner in which the
man spoke, we were struck with the appliav
bility and justness of the remark. It is custom
ary for every man in business to have a sign
emblematic of his occupation or profession)
and what so appropriate for a rum seller's sign
as one of his besotted and ruined victims! Up
on inquiry, we learned that the poor fellow
above alluded to had spent all his money and
got drunk ; and the mercenary saloon keeper,
finding that no more money would flow into
his till from that quarter, thrust him out of the
room with such violence that he fell upon the
pavement, and was wounded as we have de
scribed. While the sympathising crowd out
side, indignant at the brutal manner in which
the stranger—for such he was—had been treat
ed, assisted him to regain his feet, and washed
the blood from his face, the rum seller stood at
Ids window - with a fiendish grin upon his coun
tenance, rattling in his pockets the dimes which
be had filched from his poisoned - victim. Simi
lar scenes are enacted every day ; and they will
continue as long as the rum traffic continues ;
for the business is calculated to blunt.th`e moral
sensibilities of those who engage in it, deaden
their consciences, and make their hearts hard
and impenetrable as adamant. ; •

SOME TURICEY.-A few days ago Mr. Samuel
Middlekauff shot a wild turkey at Sterrett's
Gap, Cumberland county, whichweighed twen
ty-one pounds, and measured from the tip of
each wing five feet six inches, and from the bill
to the end of its tail four feet six inches. These
"birds" are abundant on the mountains.
RESIGNATION.—Henry Ward Beecher says the
lesson of resignation should be taught to all
men. Mr. Beecher, we presume, is quite re
signed to his six thousand dollar salary. There
are always certain points of view from which it
is pleasant to contemplate human nature, and
advise poor fellow mortals. A good salary, a
good wife, and a good dinner, are great incent
ives to eloquence.
CITY ORDINANOES.—The members of Council
are now engaged in revising the old ordinances,
and framing new ones better adapted to the
wants of our populous and rapidly extending
city. We trust they will follow the example
of Carlisle, Lancaster and York, and enact an
ordinance establishing daylight markets during
the winter season. Such action would meet
the approbation not only of our own citizens,
but of the country people who regularly at
tend market.
BEFORE THE MAYOR.—One John Parker, a
way-worn traveler from Fall River, and a
Plumber by trade, arrived here last night.—
Having no money, the tavern keepers refused
to accommodate him with lodging, and be was
obliged to apply for admission into the asylum
for vagrants: John came out of the "coop"
this morning shivering from the effects of cold,
and was introduced to the Mayor, who heard
his story and diSchatgsd . him. He was com
fortably clad, and looked like a temperate man.
SLEDDING ON THE SIDEWALKS may be sport for
the juveniles, but is attended with great dan
ger to lady promenaders. This morning a yen
kee jumper came in collision with a young
Miss who was passing up
_Second street on her
way to school. She fell with great force upon
the jumper, almbst smothering its little occu
pant, and slightly injuring one of her arms.—
Accidents occur frequently from this cause, and
"young Americe should be compelled to se
lect less dangerous coasting ground. In some
places sledding on the sidewalks of prominent
thronghfares is prohibited by ordinance. A sim
ilar system should be inaugurated in this city.
GYMNASIA IN COLLEGES AND SOHOOLS.--The
experiment of introducing physical culture, by
means of gymnastic and calisthenic exercises,
as part of the system of education at Amherst
College, is pronounced, after trial for one term,
a decided success. The institution has a gym
nasium, thoroughly appointed, with bowling
alleys and wash-rooms. The department is un
der the control of a graduated professor, whose
business it is not only to regulate the mode and
quantity of exercise, but to impart instruction
in physiology and hygiene al well. It is made
obligatory upon the students to take exercise,
just as it is to recite Latin and Greek. And it
is found, under a careful and natural regimen,
that what was feared would be disagreeable, as
partaking of the nature of cumpulsory routine,
is a very pleasant pastime, under which great
bodily good is realized by all the students.

DEATH OF AN OLD PRINT&R.—We regret to
announce the death of an old citizen and print
er, Mr. Mathew Atkinson, who departed this
life at six o'clock this morning, at Olewine's
Island, in the seventy-ninth year of his age.—
The deceased served an apprenticeship to the
printing business in this place,- with Mr. Ben
jamin Moyer, on "Die Harrisburg Arorgenroethe,"
a German paper established in ]799, the publi
cation of which was continued for a number of
years. He was a good conapositor and pressman,
and worked at the business here and in Lan
caster city, until last July, when old age and
failing health obliged him to lay down the
"stick and rule," which he had wielded faith.-
fully during a long series of years. He lived to
bury a wife and sixteen children, and has now
gone to join them in that , better land where
friends " meet to part nolmore." Peacelo his

FIRE IN JACKSON TOWNSIIIP.—The dwelling
house of Mr. Adam, about a mile from Fisher
vile, recently took fire and was entirely con
sumed, with all its contents. There was no in
surance on the property.
MILD WINTER. —One of the "oldest inhabit
ants" predicts that the present winter will be
a mild and open one. His prediction is based
upon the scarcity of beech and hickory nuts--a
"sign" which be has never known to fail. We
fear that our venerable friend's '"sign" will not
hold good this season.
DISORDERLY DARICS.--This forenoon Jake
Jones and Bill Greer, two rowdy colored fel
lows, were beinre Ald raum Kline, charged with
disorderly conduct and indulging in profane
and vulgar language before the residence of
James H. Jackson in South street. They were
bound over to appear at Court and answer the
charge.

SINGULAR COINCIDENOE.—On Sunday evening
last Bev. Edwin Burnham preached a sermon
in National Hall, Philadelphia, on the "Proph
esies," which, from the description given by
the city papers, was very similar to the sermon
on the same subject preached in the Methodist
church of this city on Tuesday evening by Rev.
Mr. Elliot of Lancaster. Na doubt both were
original. We merely allude to the matter as
a somewhat singular coincidence.
A SENATOR Sun FOR Usu.—A short time
after the late election the editor of the Mercer
Whig, and Republican Senator elect from that
district, was sued for libel by a man named
Garim, who took exception to some articles
concerning him published in the paper during
the campaign. At the recent term of Court
the Grand Jury ignored the bill and ordered the
prosecutor to pay the costs. Served him right

We do not intend to give an elaborate description of this
merchant's extensive bestows, although It will well re
pay any stranger or citizen to visit Lidolpho Wolte's ex
tensive Warehouse, Nos. 18. 10 and 22 Besixer street,
and Nos. 17, 19 and 21, Man etlield street. Ms stock of
Schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not have
been less than thirty thousand eases; the Brandy, some
ton thousand cases—Vintages of 1836 to 1856 ; and ten
thousand cases or Madeira, Sherry and Port Wine,
Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Rum,
some very old and equal to any in this country. He also
had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wine, &c., in
casks, under Custom House key, ready for bottling. Mr.
Wolfe's sales of Schnapps last year amounted to one
hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope in less
than two years he may be equally ;successful with his
Brrndies and Wines.
His business merits the patronage of every lover of his
species. Private families who wish pure Wines and
Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct
to Mr. Wolfe, until every Apothecary in the land make
up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their
shelves, and replace it with Wolfe's pure Winks and
