it is valuable because it is not perishable, and may be

It is also v,.luable as regards economy, as it has been

Scholars and Gentlemen.
To say truly of a men that he is a scholar
and a gent'eman, is to pay him one of the high
tst rersonal complimeots. tchularship aloue,
of any noteworthy grade. is the fruit of such a
devoted pursuit of knowledge for knowledge
sake, of to much Bed-11-ad, of such natural ca
pacity, that the which it wins is
most richly earned. Aud whether, in the com
pletett tense of the word, theme are more gen
deroan than scholars, may, let/taps,' at least
admit of rm. mien. To raerit_both distinctions
mar, therefore. well be coveted by those who
strive to win real honor.
If there be a locality where i3cholara and
gentlemen might be looked tor, at least in an
smbr2,onict , rm, needing only development arid
fected growth, it is a Mb - gea place wire, e, - it
would seem, all the influences are.such as tend
to the 6Upprt scion of the ware er pr.pensities of
man's fluted! e, and the nurture of all the finer.
And yet among college students there are such
manifestations of brutality that they constitute
a remarkable phenomenon at college life. We
do•not refer to the oecasion.il exhibition by in
dividual of a gross and selfish ieciffetence to
the comfort hod the feelings of others, but to .
organized cud peir eruated systems of torment, •
NITI kb a a inflicted and expected to be borne as
matters atenost as indecent to a college course
as a passage through the academic curriculum.
The recent proceeditzs at Harvard college
are striking examples of this sort of prescrip
tive brutality, whch, by tl.e ray is, in meet
cases, all the more deserving of ails very bad
name, because it is practiced especially upon
the young,- the timid, and the inexperienced,
by those who have the advantage of at least
one year's trial and induration; and how much
that does fur a lad at college, only those who
have cone through it can well know. In this
ease it was, as usual, the fr, shmen who suffer
ed at the hands of those self-taught hectors of
college life— Nesters who (in their own °platen)
add to their own venerability the wisdom of
Ulysses and the dignity of Agarnennun—the
sophomores. These advanced gentlemen have
been in the habit of "hazing" the freshmen—
"hazing" being,. a collegiate euphemism for
worrying, abusing, terrifying, maltreating—
Lads fresh from quiet hones, untaught in the
mysterious ways id college, life. yet friendless
because so, recently placed in their n- w posi
tions that they have had no time to make
friends, with, most likely, their first heart
sinking fit of home sickness full upon them,
are seiz d by those who have gene through the
same sad experience, and made the butt of bru
tality, which stop.- just short of serious person
al violence, and sometimes passes that boun
dary. There is no pos, ible defence of three
proceedings, and no palliation except their tra
ditionary chat acter. Lung usage held to IDS.
tify them; and the lad who resists in earnest,
and on the ground of right, unless he can en
dure much, and c.ire y mattas with a very high
hand, is broken in by the tt.ree of numbers,.
and the public opinion of the strange Make in
which lie encounters this trying ext.:offend°.
The faculty cit Harvard has done well de
ciding to put an end to these coarse cu-toots
by the strong arm of authority. Their effect is
brutalizing upon both parties; and.lt. is high
time that they ceased, along with many other
time-ht nured abutied. 'President Felton tightly

SPIRITUAL - 11-II IN ENGLAND. Quite a contro
versy is r; rug in soma of the London papers
with rc-gard to the merits of Hume and Spirit
ualism A g•tilleman, who appends his name
to the comaluoication as a pledge of, the truth
of his statemeut, sends to the London Star'an
extraordinary account of the, perfintnances of
Hume. Ile says :
I distinctly sate the arc'rdeon moving, and
heard it rlaying, when held only at one end;
ag , in end, avin. I held it myself for a Ehurt
time, and had good reason to know that it was
vehemently pulled at the other end, and not by
Mr. Bume's toes, as has been wisely aurmteeri,
unless that gentleman has legs three yards
10 , g, with toes at tho end of them- quite as
marvelous cs any legion of spitits. Vor, be It
stated, that such Music as we heard was no or
dinary strain ; it wassrand at times, at others
pathetic, at others distant and long drawn, to a
degree which no one can imagine who has not
heard it. "I have heard Blagrove repeated y,
but it is no libel on that taamer of the hist' it
moat to say _that'll° never pr. duced such exqui
site distant and echo notes as thus.; chit h de
lighted our ears. The luetrualeut play. d, too,
Fie distant parts of the room, many yards'asiay
from, all vf- us. I believe I am stating a'fact
when I say that not one person in that room
could play the accordeon at all. Mr. Hume
cannot play a note upon it.
