lt is valuable because' it is not perishable, and mai , be
rendered ava lable .In places and' at times When yeast Is
not within reach, as at sed.. In all climates and under
all circumstances, it may 11 adopted, thus obviating all
cilliculty of prochring yeast or other ferme t, whhili is
frequently of an inferior quality, ret dering the lareed
more or less unwholesome.
lt.ls also valuable as regards economy, as It has been
ascertained that a saving is effected in the flour, of no:
1038 than 10 per cent. In the common pronces much of
the saccharine of the Sour is lest by being coutterted -
into carbonic acid gas, or spirit, and the waste is in
curred solely for the purpose of generating gas toraise
the dough. By using Concentrated Leaven this mute is
avoided, and the gas obtained In a manner cqualiy effi
cacious. Fermentation, as has been stated, stestmys it

of 16 per neut. in the quantity of flour. By oolifermlty - to
the directions on tack package, any person capable of,
ordinary adection may conduct the process, and the re
sult will invariably be highly salisftetbry.
CERTIFICATE FROM DR. HAYES

"I have analysed the Concentrated Leaven, manufac
tured by, Messrs. Eder Chamberlin & Co., with reference
to Its purity std efficiency of action in producing the ef•
feet of yeast in distending dough, and. thereby rendering
it' fit for caking bread. This article is skillfully corn. -

pounded,' from perfectly pure , material. It- raises the
dough without containing the sugar or any other priem
pie in the flour, perfectly; and the same weight of flour
will produce more sweet, palatable-breed than can be
obtained through yeast; while forsakes and pastry it in
invaluable, as It saves ell risk, and much time of the
pastry cook.
'The experiments made by me confirm the statements
made by the manufacturers, and proves this compound
worthy of public approval and extended use.
"Respectfully,
"A. A. It AYES, M. D., State Assayer,

Henry Ward Beecher on the Present
State of Affairs,
On the Sunday after the Presidential
election, Henry Ward Beecher preached
morning and evening, at his church in
Brooklyn, upon the present aspect of affairs
in this country. The sermons were listen•
ed to -by immense-audiences.. The morning
discourse. related Mere particularly to
"God's Overruling Providence." Alter an
exposition of the ways in which God over
rules the actions of men, he counseled his
hearers to trust in God, and said:
"This is the course prescribed for us, if
we desire rest and peace in God. A man
who looks at God, seeking first the King
dom of God, and his righteousness, cannot
be disturbed. On the tops of our steepled
churchee we frequently notice- weather
cocks, which turn this, that, or the other
way, according as the wind may chance to
blow--(and thus we can generally tell
which way the wind blows by looking at
the church)—and men look at the cock and
see it go round; never once thinking of the
straight, stiff rod of iron which points di
rectly up into Heaven, never varying,
though the cock goes at every breeze, but
always' silently pointing upward. Do should
we' be—not turning, the subjects of every
fear and como.otion, but looking with un
swerving c - onfidence and faith towards God
the Ruler and Director of all. If we did
not know these facts, if we had.not all our
life long been educated to believe this, we
might be pitied for our vacillation, but not
tvained; but as it is, it is sharnefuL lam
ashamed when I hear. a Christian man (a
worldly man has no God) who is loved by
the Jehovah Christ, who might enter into
the very secret chamber of God, and touch
his heart and be sustained by him, com
plain and murmur, and run to the stern of
the ship to wake up Christ, lest all on board
should be engulfed by the waves around.
Let the overladen Christ sleep! Ile is in
the ship: he sleeps but for a moment then
there will be a calm."
He gave illustrations of the manner in
which men conduct themselves when they
are swayed solely by the tide of human af-

for this and that. Alit I say to myself,
men are not the only politicians. They are
punished enough—and we wouldn't but
they attempt to teach and corrupt the
young. They are ravens, blinded by intense
selfslmees, filling the air with words of
warning and fear'.
On the hill-side, where I. spend my sum
mers, I have often sat while reading till a
dark shade* world cross , my book, and
my ear would catch the odious " Caw, caw, •
caw," :of the crow. They : might. distraot ;
my attention for a monsent--they might till
my eyes for a second, as lazily they swept
in circle after circle, till too tar off for view,
but I never thought of asking their opinion
of healthy fiesh—or Mom' anything connect
ted with the sanitary condition ot the coun
try's cattle—neither shall I do it in politics
any more than in nature 'Let these people
crow till they are hoarse—they are not
your teachers—God is. Go to him.
Other.men t tite counsel from commercial
causes. Business is the place for fluctua
none; it is there that the fires of the lower
part of -human nature bnrn the fiercest;
and. although it or those who attended to
it are not to be despised, you should not
go there for teachings in troublous times.
dove rest with God. Aye, though the
ocean roar with the storm, He sits in ever
lasting peace. -Neither should you go to
the moods of worldly men for advice in un
easy times. The world is but a poor thing
after all. In ordinary affairs it is wise
enough, but beyond that most of men are
very foolish. Take the world as a -whole
men do not average much. One day all is
quiet and serene with theal and the next
all is panic, trouble and uproar. They are
all uncertain, likaa distracted and disor- -
dered compass, which points one way as
well as another. Some men who ate the
very strongest in calm and quiet times; but
who have no abiding and settled moral ~
p -inciple, are thaweakest, and silliest, and
most peifect fools in times of public distur
bance. In olden times pallor§ were brave
and chippy, while the headlands were, in
sight, but the moment they got oue to - sea, ,
and the waves began 'to rill in heavily, or
the winds to blow stiffly; theY . would cry
out aloud for fear, give, up control, and let
her drift whithersoever the . ship might
choose. (See Acts) • - • - - -
Possibly it may occur toyou 'that I am
preaching about affairs to- day. in New-Yot k
—perhaps drifting toward's:it:ll4Mß. Well, ,
perhaps I- am; and; if it will do you`-any
