HARRISBURG

Sza advertisement of "The World" in an
other column.
DIPTIIHRIA. — This dreaded and fatal disease
has made its appearance in some sections of
Blair county. It also prevails to a considerable
extent in Clearfield county, where a number of
deaths have occurred.
ATTENTION I MOUNT VERNON !-A stated meet
ing of the Mount Vernon Hook and Ladder
Company, No. 1, will be held in their hall this
(Wednesday) evening the 21st, at 71 o'clock.
A. full attendance of the members is earnestly.
desired. By order.
Como.—The old white-mantled Winter
Sing is about, and will soon wield his icy scep
tre, preparatory to a long and gloomy reign.
As we write this afternoon snow flakes are
whirling through the air, and there is every
Indication of a regular "squall." Prepare for
winter.
THE Locs-Ur sheltered four unfortunates last
night, answering to the names of Joseph M'Lean
George Smith, Jeremiah Potts and Henry
Glancey. The first was caged for drunkenness
and disorderly conduct. The other three were
wandering vagrants, who made voluntary ap
plication for lodging. They were all discharg
ed this morning.
Tas arms Titang.—A few days ago eight
thousand pounds of cheese, manufactured in
Indiana county, passed through this city over
the Pennsylvania Railroad for the Philadelphia
market. A short time previous five th ousand
pounds of the same article was shipped- from
the Indiana depot. The manufacture of cheese
is becoming quite an extensive and profitable
business in Indiana county.
COURT HORSE RULING.—The contract for de
livering and erecting a cast iron fence around
the Court House lot, similar to that around the
new School Presbyterian church, was this after
noon awarded to Mr. Jennings of this city.—
The bids were as follows :
Wood & Parrett, Philadelphia $426
Thomas H. Wilson & Co, Harrisburg 375
John Smith, gi 476
ct
Wm. T. Hildrup, 343
John J. Osier & Bro. ‘• 300

Wno will as &WEER P—There is much spec
ulation among the Republican politicians in
regard to the Speakership of the next House of
Representatives. The following gentlemen are
prominent candidates:
John J. Patterson, of Juniata.
Gideon J. Ball, of Erie.
Elisha W. Davis, of Yenango.
leaac G. Gordon, of Jefferson.
Isaac A. Sheppard, of Philadelphia
Jacob E. Ridgway, of
Dr. J. H. Seltzer, of "
The above named gentlemen are all compe
tent for the position, and whoever may win the
honor, the House will have a good presiding
officer. The name of Wm. H. Armstrong, Esq.,
of Lycoming, has been mentioned in connection
with the Speakership, but we learn that he has
no aspirations in that direction at present.
I=l
SusPicaons.—This morning between four and
five o'clock a lady, who resides in the upper
section of the city, when returning home from
market, was accosted by a rough-looking man,
who- proposed to carry her basket. Being a
stranger, and rather suspicious in his appear
ance, the lady promptly declined his proposi
tion. The fellow insisted upon relieving her of
the well-filled basket, and becoming alarmed
she threatened to call for assistance and protec
tion, unless he left her. At this juncture foot
steps, evidently those of a man, were heard ap
proaching, and the fellow decamped. That
his object was to get possession of the basket
and run away with it, there can be no doubt. It
is dangerous for ladies to attend market before
daylight, and we trust none of them will try
the experiment hereafter. The safety, as well
as the convenience, of our citizens, demand a
change in the time of opening market, and it
is to be hoped that Council will act in the mat
ter at their next meeting.

A CHANCE Port THE LADIES.—Any romantical
ly inclined young lady of this city who is hand
some, not over twenty-four years of age, and
has the "needful" required, has now the op•
portunity of entering into a matrimonial alli
ance with one of the editorial fraternity. For
particulars, we append the following adver
tisement from a St. Louis paper of recent date :
WIFE WANIED.—The editor and proprietor of
a newspaper which pays $2,000 per annum, in
a pleasant town in Alabama, advertises for a
wife, as there is no lady of his acquaintance
(they are very limited) who he thinks will do.
The lady must be handsome, not over 24 years
of age, have no children, of respectability, and
have a fortune of at least $2,600. The writer
is of medium size, 26 years of age, of irre
proochable character, and a handsome man.—
Ladies replying will please forward their like
ness and real names. The utmost secrecy and
delicacy will be observed by the writer, as this
is not a humbug advertisement.
DEMOCRAT, Butler, Ala
Address
We think " Democrat " is unusually modest
in his requirements. Only $2,600 for a life part
nersliip, with equal dividends. The only ob
jection that might be made would probably be
by certain maiden ladies of unknown years,
who might demur to the limitation of age.—
Make it fifty, Mr. Democrat, and we will guar
antee you a number of applicants. Very likely,
as the advertiser hailsfrom Alabama, he is pre
paring, in view of a dissolution of the Union,
to cut oft all necessity for any intercourse with
the North ; or perhaps he may be a strong
Union man, and intends making the chain of
matrimony the strong bond of Union by mar
rying a strong-minded Yankee girl. It appears
that " Democrat " is very desirous of conduct.
ing the matter in the most delicate and secret
manner. We would be willing to forward the
likeness, accompanied by a proposition, of any
young lady desirous of entering into the hyme
nial state, who is not afraid to venture among
the chivalry them exciting times.
pennovivania flatly eetegrapl), Werneobav 'Afternoon, November 21, 1860.
PRESERVES.—The paper which is usually past
ed over jars of preserves, is porous and admits
air. To render it perfectly impervious, and as
tight as a drum, apply the white of an egg
with a brush to the paper before covering the
jar, overlapping the edges an loch or two.

PosreonEn. —The sale of Pennsylvania Rail
road property by the Sheriff, on executions re
cently serv( d, for tonnage tax, announced to

sale having been postponed until to-morrow. By
what " arrangement" the postponement was
effected, remains to be explained.

A YOUNG WOMAN, named Sinclair, has pub
lished a voluble of "poems." She addresses
the following lines to her sweetheart :
"I would I were that nice segar
That rests between your lips,
For, oh I I grudge the honey
Of the nectar which it sips."
TEE OILINGEABLIE WALTZ, is the title of a new
piece of music, just published, composed by our
young friend Mr. Henry Orth, of this city, who
already occupies a creditable position among
the music writers of the present day. Some of
his productions are among the very best pub
lished and sold by leading houses.
Frits COMPANY BALL.—The first annual ball
of the Good Will Fire Company will come off in
Brant's Hall next Wednesday evening. The
object is to raise funds to aid in liquidating the
debt duo on the new hose carriage, and furnish
ing the engine house recently. erected. The
members of the company do good service in
times of conflagration, and deserve encourage
ment, especially from property holders.
Hosonesix Aceurrran.--In old and highly
respected citizen of Harrisburg was prosecuted,
some days ago, by a german woman in the em
ploy of John Paella, for attempt to forcibly vio
late her person. At the time we denounced
the charge as absurd and false, and our posi
tion has been sustained by the jury before
whom the case was tried yesterday. After
hearing the testimony of the woman, the ar
guments of counsel, and the charge of the
Judge, the jury promptly and unanimously re
turned a verdict of not guilty.
TUB ADJUTANT GENNRALAIP AGAIN.—ODO of
our Crawford county Republican exchanges
contains the following item - relative to the Ad
jutant Generalship of this State. We have no
doubt that a very large class of community
will heartily endorse the closing sentence of the
paragraph :
The Erie Gazette suggests the name of Capt.
John McLean for appointment to the office of
Adjutant General by Gov. Curtin. We know
of no one better qualified for the office and
would be pleased to see him receive the ap
pointment, but we believe the office is not va
cant for some time yet. And besides, we be
lieve Gov. Curtin is "some military," and
could easily attend to the laborious duties of
this office. The best thing that can be done,
is for the next Legislature to abolish the office
entirely.
ANOTHER MYSTERIOUS RAPPING CASE occurred
in this city last night. A young man, while
promenading with a lady whose ... father had for
bidden him to seek her society, was "rapped"
over the head with a stick by the old man, who
came upon the people when they did not expect
him. The "raps" were three in number, fol
lowing each other in quick succession, and loud
enough to be heard across the street. The gal
lant, not liking such -"manifestations," beat a
rapid retreat, leaving the indignant "parient"
to escort his daughter home. This incident af
fords another striking illustration of the truth
of the old proverb, that "the course of true love
never runs smooth."

A GOOD SUGGLIZEON.—WhiIe the people of
this highly favored and prosperous Common
wealth are about to celebrate our annual
Thanksgiving, a cry of distress comes to us from
the far-off plains of Kansas—our western colo
ny—where thousands are in a famishing condi
tion, and must starve unless speedy relief
reaches them. In view of this fact, a cotempo
rary suggests that it would be an act of real
charity for the churches of our State to take up
collections on Thanksgiving day for the relief
of the sufferers. Gov. Dennison, of Ohio, has
issued a proclamation invoking the churches of
that State to take up contributions towards
that end on the 29th, and no doubt Governors
of other States will follow. We trust Pennsyl
vania will also do her duty in this matter. In
the midst of our thanksgivings for the rich
blessings we enjoy, let us remember the fam
ine-stricken sufferers of Kansas, and respond
promptly and liberally to their appeals for relief.
I=l
PUNT Max.—A reportorial brother Protests,
against puny men, a race common to this and
every other city. They may be and often are
very keen in particular departments and walks
of life, but they are not and cannot be men who
take broad common sense view of things. Thee
will fiddle faddle over details and minutia',
while a large, heavy, broad faced man of much
greater obtuseness of mind, will seize the great
outlines of business, and work them through
successfully. Men without constitution are
soon worn out. They cannot give continuous
attention to one point. After so many hours
their minds flag, and any man who can hold
out quietly till they are a little worn down, can
get his own way with them. There is a vital
stamina of purpose which islacking in them.
Nervous, impatient and fidgety, they cannot I
wait for the right time and place to carry their .
point and effect their designs. On the other
hand, the man with a good constitution in
spires a sort of respect by his robust, firm, large
and healthy look. Everybody sees that there
is 'Sower behind all that is put forth in every
thing that he does. His cool, easy, placid way,
his cheerful and self-satisfied air has its weight
as well as its softening and pleasing influence.
He does not easily get out of temper, and when
he does, it is the rage of a strong man, out of
the way of which all weaker men had better
stand and get aside. He will often lack quick
ness of perception, and be still slower in mo
tion, but there will be no waste of power about
him. If he makes a gesture in speaking, it
will be just sufficient to enforce his idea and no
more. A good constitution lies at the basis of
much sound morality. It makes a man in
stinctively noble—the hater of littleness and
deceit.
A SPECIAL Mamma of the Good Will. Fire
Company will bo held this evening for the
transaction of important business. A full turn
out is desired.
NOT Giorm.—Roeloff, the conductor, and
Armstrong, the engineer, of the train which
killed two men at Huntingdon during the en
cainpment, a few months ago, were up for trial
last week. The charge of manslaughter could
not be sustained against either of them by the
evidence, and consequently both were acquitted.
COURT OF OYER AND TERMINER.—The court
met at the usual hour this morning. The first
case called up was the Com. vs. George Kelly,
a colored man, charged with violating the per
son of a young white girl about thirteen years
of age. The whole forenoon was occupied with
the case, and it is still progressing.
MARKET Tarns.—At an early hour this morn
ing, while a countryman was unloading his
wagon, some fellow stole from him a basket
containing twelve rolls of butter. The thief
was pursued a short distance down Market
street, but he dodged into an alley and escaped.
Our rural friends should keep their eyes open
these times, for rogues are numerous and ope
rate with great skill.
RELIGIOUS.—The Quarterly Conference and I
Love Feast of the Locust street Methodist con
gregation will be held this evening, the former
at quarter past six o'clock, and the latter at
quarter past seven o'clock. The " love feast"
is one of the time-honored institutions of the
Methodist church, and is always looked for
ward to as an occasion of more than ordinary
religious interest. We have no doubt our
Methodist friends will enjoy a refreshing season
this evening. Members of other denomina
tions, and persons religiously inclined, will be
admitted to the "love feast" on application to
the proper church officers.
ILl'arsos AGAIN.—On the ninth of Novem
ber a girl named Mary Dougherty, who had ab
sconded from her home in York county and
was living a life of prostitution, was arrested in
this city at the instance of her father, and re
fusing to accompany him home, Alderman
Kline committed her to prison as a vagrant.
Last week the girl was discharged, and has
since been lying around loose, and drinking to
intoxication. This morning one of the con
stables found her drunk in the market house,
and re-arrested her for vagrancy. Alderman
Kline committed her for thirty days. The
father of the girl has abandoned all hope of her
reformation, and is much distressed in conse
-
quence.
CHRISTIAN REssonsruarrY.—The New York
"Observer," in commenting on our political
troubles, remarks as follows :—"On the Chris
tian people of this country a mighty responsi
bility is resting now. In every city, village or
neighboohood, where men meet to discuss the
value of the Union, to devise ways and means
to break up the Confederacy, and to resolve
this Republic into a score of isolated, alienated,
belligerent and contemptible kingdoms, there
let the voice of , Christian remonstrance and ap
peal be beard above the clamor of angry politi
cians and ambitious.partierros, and the voices of
Christian patriotism will be lieerd_sud prevail.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be
called the children of God." We commend
this subject to the consideration of the clergyof
our city and county.

Moriums, READ Tats.—The following is an
extract from a letter written by the pastor of a Baptist
church to the "Journal and Messenger," Cincinnati,
Ohio, and speaks volumes in favor of that world-re
nowned medicine—Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup for
Children Teething :
"We see an advertisement in your column of Mrs.
Winslow's Soothing Syrup Now we never said a word
in favor of a patent medicine before in our life, but we
feel compelled to say to our readers, that this is no hum
bug—we have tried It, and know it to be all it claims. It
is, probably, one of the most successful medicines of the
day, because it is one of the best. And those of your
readers who have babies can't do better than to lay
a supply. 5522

PROF. WOOD'S HAIR RESTORATIVE.—This Re
storative for making the hair grow, stopping its falling
out, and restoring gray hair to Its original color, is be
coming celebrated. All the quack nostrums are giving
way before it. Three fourths of the mixtures for re
storing and beautifying the hsir, do it more injury than
good. They burn it up—destroy the life of its roots—.
make the hair fall off, and produce premature baldness.
But Prof. Wood's Restorative may be relied upon as con
taining nothing which can in any manner be injurious to
the hair, while its success in accomplishing what it pre—
tends to do has been verified in hundreds of cases. We
advise gray heads, and heads getting bald—all who wish
to save their wool or obtain a new stock, to get a bottle
of Wood's Restorative.—N. Y. Democrat.

grgr WE call the attention of our readers to an
article advertised in another column, called IlLoon Foon
It is an entirely new discovery, and mustnotbe confound
ed with any of the numerous patent medicines of the
day. It is food for the blood, already prepared for ab
sorption; pleasant to the taste and natural in action, and
what one gains he retains. Let all those, then, who are
suffering from poverty, impurity or deficiency of blood,
and consequently with some chronic disease or ailment,
take of this BLOOD FOOD and be restored to health. We
notice that our DrUggists have received a supply of this
article, and also of the world-renowned Dr. FAZON'S IN.
norms CORDIAL, which every mother should have. It
is said to contain no paregoric or opiate of any kind
whatever, and of course must be invaluable for all intim
tile complaints. It is .also said that it will allay all pain,
and soften the gothic in process of teething, and at the
same time regulate the bowels. Let all mothers and
n i urses, who have endured anxious days and sleepless
n ghts, procure a supply and be at once relieved.

ENORMOUS BUSUIESS FOR ONE NNW Yoe MNRCILANT..-
We are happy to inform our fellow-citizens that there 13
one place in our city where the physician, apothe c ary,
and. country merchant, can go and purchase pure Wines
and Liquors, as pore as imported, and of the best quality;
We do not intend to give an elaborate description of 04;
merchant's extensive kindness, although it will well re
pay any stranger or citizen to visit Udolpho Wolfe's ex
tensive Warehouse, Nos. 18.:0 and 2.i Beaver street,
and. Nos. 17, 19 and 21, Mari etlield street Ills stock of
Schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not have
been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some
ten thousand eases—Vintages of 1835 to 1830 ; and ten
thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wine,
Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Rum,
some very old and equal to any in this country. Re also
had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wino, tte., in
casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bott ling. Mr.
Wolfe's sales of Schnapps last year amounted to one
hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope in
than two years he may be equally k successful with his
Brrndies and Wines.
His business merits the patronage of every Lover of his
species. Private families who a ish pure Wines and
Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct
to Sir. Wolfe, until every Apothecary in the land MIMEO
up their minds to discard the poisonous stuff from their
shelves, and replace it with Wolfe's puro WIRES auk
LIQUORS.
We understand Mr. Wolfe, for the accommodation of
small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases of
Wines and Liquors. Such a,man, and such a merchant,
should be sustained against his tens of thousands of op
ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but imita
tions, ruinous alike to health and human happiness.
