The transmissions of power, through, the me
dium of compressed air carried in tubes to the
place where it is required, has been., a favorite
theme for speculation for some years past,..und
a little more than a year ago - a' company was
formed and application made to the 'French
Government for permission to lay mains in the
city of Paris to convey air to all houses where
it was desired either for power or for ventila
tion. We have heard nothing more about this
company, but the subject is still- mooted in
Mechanical circles, and the details of the work
are gradually being elaborated. The last of
which we have heard is a machinator the Oem
pression of air, the invention of Mr. Vonwiller,
which the editor of Ceases has seen in operation
in a workshop in Buis. It operates on the
same principle as the bucket water-wheel, ex
cept that instead of using the tendency of water
to fall through air, the tendency of air to rise
through water is used, the wheel revolving in
water, and the compressed air being let down
under and into the buckets, which it raises by
its ascensive force. A. reversal of the machine,
using, force to turn the wheel,, will of course
compress the air, the inverted buckets biking
it from the atmosphere at its natantl tension
and carrying, it down into the water. It be
comes compressed as it descends, and is finally
set free at a s certain , depth, the degree of com
pression depending upon the depth to which it
is submerged. A tube with a funnel-shaped
mouth, placed immediately over the point
where it is discharged by the buckets, receives
it in its compressed state, and it may then be
carried to a distance) and .need for ventilation.
power of a water-fall may be utilized at a dis
tance without great loss of power.
M. Mendt has invented a very simple contri
vance for the deconaposition of water and the
combustion of the hydrogen thus gained. The
apparatus consists of a small copper boiler pro
vided with a safety valve and •pipe which pass
es into a•tubular bottle with two necks placed
near the boiler. From the second neck another
tube Flasks under the boiler. Half a gallon of
water is poured into the boiler, and a pint of
week-tar water into the bottle. A spirit-lamp
applied to the boiler and the steam thus gene
rated goes into the -bottle, whence it yields its
oxygen to the tar, and the hydrogen accumula
ting in the bottle passes through the second
tube to the bottom of the bi.iler, where it
meets the flame of the spirit lamp. As soon as
the hydrogen begins to burn the spirit-lamp
may be taken away, and the process continues
until all the water is burned.
At the lest meeting of the New York Eth
nological Society Mr. Ewbank presented the
report of the interview of the committee with
the Japarisse. They learned that in Japan
reading and writing are almost universal, and
that there is a large Japanese: literature, the
censorship having been established only about
fifty years aeo. Their books are tray cheap,
and illustrated books have been common for
ages. Trades do not descend from father to
sun generally; men fellow what profession they
choose. Wind-power is not used at all, water
power but little. and animal' power only to a
very small extent except in agricultural opera
tions. Almost every thing is done by man
power. Vaccination has only recently been
introduced. The committee saw an illustrated
book on the quarrying and smelting of copper,
one of a series of industrial hand-Woks with
which they were very much struck. They say
it conveys the knowledge it treats of in fewer
words than are used in our prefaces or intro
ductions, and that the illustrations are so full
and plaid that the ordinary English readers
can be at no loss as to any particular. Four
teen pages are occupied by outline pictures,
slightly shaded and colored, representing all
the details and operations from quarrying to
marking and packing the copper. Then thir
teen pages more are tilled with the tools used,
each part being separatelydrawn ' with its name
annexed. This is . so minute as to give all the
basket, pokers,. hammers, pincers, tongs, bel
lows, tubs, shovels, moulds,.stamps with which
to mark the ingots, and scales.for weighing
them. The 'bellows act on the principle of our
double-acting pumps., book was printed
in colors; the Japanese 'said they were "much
plenty.!! The price; of this Was only eight or
ten cents. The report says that, so far as re
gards the prodnetion 'of a cheap and useful
literature, Japan may be said to have been cen
turies in advance of Europe. Measures have
been taken to open 'a correvotideuce with some
of the learned men of Jepau. - •
