The Fiery Cross on its Travels.
His Holiness, it appears, has been making
application for assistance upon the various Ro
man Catholic governments of Europe. This
fiery cross on the present occasion, would
scarcely enter the dominions of the monarch of
Gaeta and Capua; but would proceed at once
through the Tyrolese mountains to Vienna, the
bearer rushing hurriedly into the Imperial
presence,
and announcing the place of muster
to be on the banks of the Tiber and the time
instant. From Vienna-it would pass up the
valley of the Danube to Munich, and then zig
zag for a time among the German principalities
still loyal to Rome and conservatism. While'
the Alpine clans were pouring down ready
armed' for the fight, the ominous signal 'would
enter the plains of Belgium, and turning from
its formidable dykes, would siraightway set
off for the Tuileries, reminding the French
Emperor' how successfully Pepin and Stephen
had'fought side by side more than a thousand
years ago. Hence to Madrid and Lisbon, cross
ing Pyrenees and Sierras, would hie the ecclesi
astical "Maisie," fetching up onlyat the Pillars
of Hercules, the Western limit of the ancient
world.
But the .call upon Napoleon, it is said, was
more significant than that addressed to any of
the other potentates. It was not a mere ex
hortation,
.hut partook largely of the nature of
an - rdlintaluni. The line of duty was not only
pointed out, but threats were freely indulged
in, if the Man of Destiny did .not proinptly
interfere to save the Estates of the Church
from invasion by the Sardinians. Otherwise
the Pope would leaye- He would bolt, with as
little regard to consequences as did the Breck
faridge delegates at Charleston, or the ',melte
Senators in the Oregon Legislature. He would
betake himself to other Climes, or what might
be worse, take to the bush. Rome with its
French garrison, would be left unaided to op
pose the terrible malaria which threatened. to
enter the place from the Apennines, as well as
the Campagna. It would be a sad perdieament
for the ruler Of Entice, sash a stampede made
by Pope, cardinals, bishops, priests, monks,
nuns, et id genus omne.
We can readily imagine the secretive Em
peror mutteriog to himself, "Go and be—
blessed," on receipt of the threatening . misive
"Go to Austria, to Spaiti, to Portugal, to• Belg
ium, to Bavaria. - Go any - where you choose,
and may your benevolent wishes work no more
mischief that:. they are likely to do Victor
Emanuel." Bat the time:has not yet come for
openly uttering this language. In the rural
distrieta of France many myriads of votes were
received in. 1851 through the influence of the
Romanist clergy; and it is not expedient to
throw away that support for the present. If
the old Pontiff would not be so unbendable, it
is important that he should still be surrounded
with French hayonets. Even the city of Rome,
th6ugh a mere fragment of Peter's patrimony,
ould be better for him than nothing.

only a refuge, but efficient aid to put down the
Italian rebellion, if she has, the whereWithal. =
The King of Belgium could contribute little
more than the quota said by Dean Swift to
have been furnished by the Dutch on a former
occasion—one hundred 'thousand butter tubs;
while Spain's contribution would consist princi
pally of boastings, as in 1849. Ireland could
hardly be expected' to pass round the hat a
second time; though, if put , to their metal her
Cells might come up to , the princely liberality
of Denmark, which 'backed up the famous
Dutch contribution with one hundred thousand
herrings.
It appears to us that this pater-familias might
better remain under• his own roof, protected
from invasiOn, 'as it is, by ten thousand blessed
bayonets in' the hands of as many religious
Frenchmen. By going further he might only
fare worse. In any event, he would ' lose his
prestige as Bishop of Rows, and successor of St:
Peter. Jerusalem, it is true, is a sacred spot.;
but then those villainous Druses and Moslems
are hovering in theneighborhood. We ineline
to think that the -secular rule of the Micado is
at an end, and that thiS functionary would do
well to permit his temporal off sirs to pass into
the hands of a Tycoon, in the shape of Napoleon
