'stranger than fiction; and chameter, whether
figuring in history or in , the plot of a novel,
to be effective and capable of exciting the admit
ration,,and enlisting the sympathies of the
reader, must in-one-case be tbe embodiment of
true heroism, and in the other the faithful and
exact type of it: The poem and romance,
though, the offspring' of fruitful imaginations,

pery of words; but to the genuineness of the
.characters they portray and the purity of the

Sam was , a sort of on offcast of - tins of the
first families, and was banished to a !tract of
land in the. "Octorara barrens," to fulfill the
mission of a farmer; but his calling was sadly
mistaken, from the fact of the diversity of his

was regarded by his rustic neighbors as a living
storehouse - of information on every subject;
but that which pertained to the "rough and
tumble" process of hard Work. He was decid
idly "averse to the hard fisted science, which
