"A PITIFUL 4.130RTWN,"
Onegeovernor Packer's = office-holders,
Deputy Secretary Dreifenbseh, has been
in Clinton county for some weeks, man
aging the Locofoco politics of that county,
to the neOeet of his official duties here,
In the last issue of his delectable sheet,
the Milton Democrat, he characterizes a
late speech of B Rusu PETRIKEN, Esq.,
one of the People's candidates for the Le
gislature, as "a pitiful abortion." Mr.
Pan=Nis agentleman of acknoWledged
rability,bonorable and high-minded, courte
ous and dignified---which is more than
can truly be said of his assailant. We
think it would be difficult to 6nd, any
where, a more " pitiful abortion" than
the Deputy Secretary. He has always
been regarded as thif smalleskkind of a
"small potato" politician-Ar miserable
cringing sycophant—ever readrindtwill
ing to serve his superiors, in any capacity,
for the sake of the thrift that follows
fawning;" and the place he now holds
was bestowed upon him aftecompense
for menial work performed during a
long term of service in the employ of his
present master. For years past he has
maligned and slandered the best and purest
men in the Opposili t on party of Clinton
county, as he is nowdiaing Mr. PETRIKEN;
but fortunately he id too well known in
that region to do serious injury—:like a
poisonous serpent deprived of its sting, he
crawls along inh hisses, without the pow
er to wound. V the Deputy Secretary
would behold an accurate likeness of " a
pitiful abortion," he has only to consul-,
his mirror 1 The secret of his assail t
upon PETRLKEN is fear of certain
promised developments, in the event of
Vitt gentleman's election, which will have
a damaging effect upon the corrupt crew
whose dirty work he is employed to do.
This it is that " makes the galled jade
winoe"—this is the real secret of ilie:ata
holy crusade waged against Mr. Prat
Kim by the unscrupulous and 'cupt
leaders of the Locofoco party in Clinton
county, prominent and most violent of
whom is ALLISON WRITE, of LOCOMpION
uohniety; the great rejected of the people
in; that Congressional district. The pee
pie, however, are on thshatde of Mr. PST
aIINN, and we confidently anticipate his
election by an overwhelming majority.
We know that scores of the most influen
tial • and active Democrats of Lycoming
end Clintou counties have declared in his
flier, and not'only talk but work for him.
Let our Americen-Republican 'Mends do
their duty, and both . Mr. PETRIKEN, and
liioVorthy colleague MI.MEHAITIY, will
betrinnaphantly elected.

TIME TO WORK I
We are now within two weeks of the
election, and it is time for our political
friends throughout the county to arouse
from their lethargy, organize thoroughly,
and go to work. The Locofocos, with their
usual cunning and tact, are operating
quietly and effectively, marshaling their
forces, and by slanderous insinuations
seeking to poison the minds of American
Republicans against candidates on their
own ticket. It is time, therefore, for the
working men of our 'party to buckle on
their armor, and go into the contest with
a determination ; not to furl their banners
or ground their weapons
. until the battle
shall have been fought,,and the -victory
won ! Organize every township and school
district ! Circulate documents among the
people, ancMilt Aim out to the meetings !
Place'tiokets in the hands of reliable men
whip will furnish them to the voters !
Show the opponents of Locofocoism the
importante of a decisive victory this 'fall,
in view of the approaching Presidential
contest ! In every respect do your duty,
from now until the electionoid wheit
the second Tuesday of October arri4s,
marshal ydur forces, march in solid column
to the ballot boxes, and poll a FULL. VOTE'
