This community, as well as all the other communities located in the counties cOri. ling the district of 'Marshal'Clement, will re member that the most _ frightful charges were preferred against the entire Board of Enrollment of this District. Marshal Clem ent, Deputy Marshal John J. Patterson 'and Surgeon Charlton were Severally and together charged with crimes which, in their heinous ness, if proved, would have consigned each to. felons' cells. These charges were bruited amcing the people —circulated wherever they . could.find credence, magnified And exmger ated, until the people, with one voice, de manded an invesdgation;a demand, by the way, heartily acquiesced in by, the paities charged with the frauds. Accordingly Capt. Baird and Lieut,..Barnes were deputed to investigate the alleged dishonesty of the Enrolling Board. After:the most careful investigation and the examination of fifty witnesses, all summoned at the --instance of the copperheads who brought the charges, the reit:fit - lA* 'been "a failure to establish a single Charge; The . :4u-; niata Sentinel, referring to the „eourt says: Not a single witness swore 'what they said' he would swear.
