OFFICIAL REPORT OF GENERAL GRANT.
The report of the operations of the Army of
the Tennessee, from the day on which Major
General Grant assumed the immediate com
mand of • the expedition against Vicksburg, to
the surrender of, that place, is published in the
Official Gazette. lie, says it is a striking feature
so-far as his observationgoes of. the present
volunteer army of the:United States, that there
is nothing , which men are nailed upon to do,
Mechanical or professional, that.accomplished
adepts cannot be found for the duty required in
almost every regiment.
lie cannot close his report without an ex
pression of thankfulness for his good fortune in
being placed in co-operation with an officer of
the navy, who v aocOrderi to. every move tbat
seemed forlbe interest and success of our army
his hearty and energetic support. "Admiral
Pjrter," he adds, "And.)the very efficient offt
cers under him, have ever shown the greatest
readiness in. their co-operation—no matter what'
was to be done, "or whatrisk to be taken, either
by their men or their vessels. Without this
prompt and cordial support, my movements
would have been much embarrassed, if not
wholly defeated."

puiusaNG COTION.-A letter to the St. Louis
BepttbliCan from nothern Mississippi, under
date of July 27, says :
The rebels , are burning cotton far and wide.
The whole country south of the Tallahatchie
river and between that and Jackson, Miss., is
one vast cotton conflagration. The torch is put
to every bale that can be found, and the smoke
from the burning staple bangs like a dense fog
over the land. And while this is done south
of the Tallahatchie, Chalmers, is beginning the
work of deettbctiOn north of that stream, and
betweea it and the Coldwater creek.
Orders have been baled to burn all, andlhis
forces are out in every direction carrying them
into execution. They swear t a balasballbe

that in lesithan thirty days Missiesippi -proud
