They proceeded up the James river and wl-en
above City Point an i within ab.int seven Miles
(A Fort Darling, at a point called Dutch Gap,
a torpedo was explcded under the bows cif the
,Commodore Barney, by a lock fitting connecting
with the onto.
The explosion is described as most terrific,
lifting Oa boats of the ComModore Barney
complet, trout of the water fall ten feet, - and
throwing a great quantity of water high into
the air, which tell upon the deck of the boat,
washiug overboard fiteen of her men, among
whom was, Lieutenant Cushion, commander of
the Barney. Mej,r General Foster was on
board this host when the explosion took place
