MORGAN'S LAST RAID
How the Hand was Finally Captured
[lion the Cleveland Herald, July 27.1
We have already mentioned the fight that
ook 0103 at npringfirld, between SreuMnvilla
nd balinaville, on Sattoday evening. That
fight was in reality a bluncering.attack of one
poi Von of our forces upon another peril n o
the same. A Dian had been laid for the cap
tare of Idotgau's entire band. The militia
were stationed on a hill overlooking a road
which Morgan was expected to traverse, ann
the cavalry and other regular forces were to
Gin. Brooks, commanding the department,
had wars to Wellsville and estalhished his'
headquarters in the Ceveland and Pittsburg
aelrot. where he was assisted by the managing
officers of, the road, who bad placed the trans
portation and telegraphic resources of the road
at his disposal. Finding that.there was a pro,
Viability that filorg•n would cross the road in
the vicinity of •Salinevide. a train of cars was,
sent up the road, about 6 o'clock on Sunday
morning with a regiment of six months' Pent,'
dylyania infantry, under command of Ord. Gal
lagher. These were disembarked at S ilinesvilie
and marched to a point about two wiles distant,
where the rebels were expected to cross. The
infantry were posted on some rising ground
commanding tne road, withz.orders to prevent
Illorsan's passage. •
i At this time the utictiost alarm existed amour
tibe people if Salineville: ,The houses were
dosed, doors aud. wi udowtk. locked and barred,
and women.and children starqpiiding into the
country:i‘ith whatever portable property could
6e carried along. The men ,w/eci bad weapons
and courage turned out to.resist the progress of
the dreaded rebel, while all the others fled with
the women and children. 3.e:

' In a short time the expected rebels made
their appearance. coming around a bend in the
road: easatching sight of the intantry they
hat ed and:turned their horses' head in another
direction.. Beier° they could get out of tne
trap they foned—themsel.teti in, Maj )i. Way,

ashed among therm and cornmenced cutting
right and left. The rebels made but a brio

and then the .waole patty broke into utter con

ludicrous, and.could, only •'ti tbatnlitul..by. the ,

breaking away, and following their fuel lye

1 •'lhe number of killed in this fight was much
ess than at Mat reported. 'Abe number of
Med rebels was set dowa.as from tw. uty to
bitty, but thla must be overrated, as we can
hot learn of more than five or six dead bodies
having .been found_ There,:was a considerable

Special train was sent to elh3ville in the
afternoon, with at two bdndred and fifty

A' few of our cavalry were wounded, two or
three seriously. Lieut. FiSkawas shot thiough

Mot gan and the remainder of hie scattered
their services as guides, and continued their

presset guides made his escape and rode back,

which it wes beltaved was with the ultimate
