PHILADELPHIA, July, 7.
The city waa thrown into a fever of atufta
tation this afternoon by the Announcement of
the surrender of Vicksburg. In Third street
cheering, handshaking and , congratathitions
were the universal order of the day, while
every face was wreathed in smiles.
People were so excited that they would be
ready for the capture of Richmond, or the lay
down of rums by every "subject" of Jeffer
ruin Magic, cchspletely- kaa , thaaidelttleclkill
changed, and so assured does the success of our
AMA appear.
When the news of the surrender reached Fifth
and Chesnut streets, the State House bell was
ordered to he rung. The bell ringer entered
into the JAatter very zealously, and the bell
continued to proclaim the glorious news for
some time.
7A.M.
The violent ringing of the bell was not gen
erally understood, and an immense crowd of
people was drawn to the State House. It was
then ascertained that Vicksburg had surrender
ed, and cheer after cheer was given by the vast
multitude.
A number of fire companies turned out under
the impression that a fire had broken out, but
upon. learning the glad tidings the bells of 'the
bole catriages were sprung and the whistles of
the steam engines were blown. Altogether the
scene about the State House was one of intense
excitement andenthusiasm. • •
Flags were thrown to the breeze in all direc

A gentleman conversant with zriliiary &fake
states, as the result of a recent examination of
the records, that since the commencement of
this war we have best thirty-seven generals by
death, twenty-six of whom were killed in bat
tle or died by reason of casualties; and, 'in
addition, sixty-one generals have been wounded
and recovered.
It may not be publicly known that General
Hancock was wounded in the groin in the re
cent battle by a tea penny nail. This is ac
counted for on the supposition that it was driven
from a fence near by. The. nail and a small
piece of wood have been extracted and the
patient is convalescent. Officers who hale ar
rived here accord much credit to him and Gen.
Gibbon for their conduct on the field.
From intercepted letters written by Jeff.
Davis, it is ascertained that there were recently
but few rebel troops in North Carolina, South
Carolina and Virginia—they having been with
drawn to reinforce Johnston and other Generals
of the so-called Confederacy.
Among the inddents or the Fourth of July,
was the presentation to the Washington Com
mandery, No. 1, Knight's Templar and Knighte
of Malta, of two magnificent standards—one
the banner of the Order, and the other the Na
tional standard. The presentation address was
made by . Bev. Dr. Mcititudy, on behalf of Sir
Knight.J. P. Bartholew, by whom the dona
tion was made. After the consecration , of - the
standard, and an address by Grand Command- r
French, the Knights escorted the City Coundle
to the celebration ground
