THE WAY TO CELEBRATE TIDE FOL - 8111 OF JULY
most gloriously, would be for every citizen
housekeeper to invite two soldiers to assist
in eating trgood dinner, and for every bache
lor to pay for the dinners of at least a dozen
other soldiers. There would be sense and sym
pathy in such a celebration, and we trust that
the eighty-seventh anniversary of American
Independence *ill be thus celebrated in the
capital of Pennsylvania.
AB/DE FROX the really serious invasion of our
State by the rebels, the war prospects are very
encouraging. Rosecracs is moving successfully
after Bragg ; Grant is making constant head
way at Vicksburg ; and Banks is doing good
work at Port Hudson—all indicating that the
entire South West will soon be restored
_to the
control of the. General Government. If the in
surgent forces now in Maryland and Pennsyl
vania are routed, and if possible captured, the
end of the rebellion will soon be welcomed , by
millions of loyal hearts.
RIMMED as they= for the living green I—the
color that rests and refreshes the wearied eye—
the symbol of youth—the promise of golden
gifts to some. What were Nature's floral
'broldery unrelieved by the velvet ground work
zlf the grass! Take away the verdure of the
fi e ld s ; and who would Dare for the wildflowers?
The yellol,;" dandelions —who would mark them,
save for the'
qmooth expanse of emerald on
which they lie stars newly fallen ? And
the ruddy drawbar-Z:43 in which Dauphin
county abounds—would ;'ett stoop to gather
them, if, instead of flushing the tufted hill
and level meadows, they lay 11. ‘ : 41 burni n g
blood-spots on the verdureless sand?
HAND ON Honssa.---The present sultry weatO r
is particularly hard on horses. But those who
have control of such beasts do not all realize
this fact, or they do not care to give it any at
tention, if we may judge by' the manner in
which some of the cavalrymen, hackmen and
genteel equestrians deal with their animals.
Badmen particularly, are hard beasts on poor
horses. Yesterday evening this was exempli
fied by the.death of a horse in the hack service.
The jaded animal had been literally driven and
beaten to death. Hour after hortr—without
time for feed or rest, the poor beast . was driven
over the dusty road between Market street and
Camp Curtin. It knew no respite. Its harness
was was never removed until at last it fell down
in its own tracks, breathing its last breath
beneath the driver's lash. Heaven help that
driver I There is a lash over .his head which
must sooner or later fall, if he does not amend
hie actions and change his disposition. But in
the meantime, we would advise the authorities
to protect the horses from the tyranny of the
savage beasts who have them in charge.
Rs-AARZST or A lIEBEL 51.1.-Yesterday we refer
red to the fact of the arrest of a cavalry Captain,
flamed J. H. M. Wertbrecht, under the most
suspicious circumstances, which . it is not neces
sary now to repeat. After a hearing before the 1
military authorities, Wertbrecht was set at lib
erty, much to the indignation of those who
had arrested him, and the people who under
stood the facts connected with the case. It
now appears that this same fellow was again
arrested this'morning, while in the very act of
crossing our lines, having in charge two horses- .
He was taken in custody and committed-for a
hearing. His release yesteiday was_ the most
mysterious transaction of the- week ; and bis
arrest this morning under all the circumstances,
has filled the public with just alarm. Spies
are undoubtedly larking in, every secret or
available' place for deriving information
along the river, in the Cumberland Valley an 4
in Harrisburg. These should be dealt with
sharply. They should not at least be let (ff,
as this fellow was, to ma the., chances of es
cape with the most important information.
Houma: &Oman or HUMMAN.—The
tense and refined fiendishness of the treatment
that Union men at the South receive from their
rebel enemies, is unsurpassed in any story' of
Oarbarotur ages. At Little Bode; Ark., lived a
nus tteroue body of Union 'men, leraying for a
sigh of the old flag and a day" of deliverance,
as none Mt' prayed save the men of Leyden.
They met niginly in cellars—had their secret
grips aw l pas s words—and with all the heroism
of martyrs, Dors . ,' suspicion, taunts, threats and
violence, unflincLing in their resolution never
to enter the rebel ranks alive. When Hind-
man occu piedurar.,
Little Rock in force, twenty-skevett
were
of the men
tested and imprisonekint
suspicion—their wors, F_enemy accusing them,
an overt act against th e rebel government. „
One day their wives, t 'Waren, Prents, broth-:
era and sisters were invit, ed bgEindman's order:
to come and visit them. Their' dungeon doors
were opened, and arm and' arm with their re
joicing families, they were coffered to wander,
under guard, about the town and, in the fields.
The bright sunlight and sweat air of this un
wonted freedom intoxicated them into creduli
ty. They and the dear ones from whom they
bad been so long sundered, were felicitating
themselves with the idea of the hope of perma
nent liberty, and fancied that the tiger Hindman
bad forgotten his taste for blood. Just at the
limits of the town the officer in command bade
the families of the suspected halt—and marching
those twenty-seven brave men out of the very
arms of love, ranged them into an open lot
before a file of riflemen, and there shot all of
them to death in plain sight of their shrieking
households.

FIRE 1 FIRE I EIKE
PHILADELPHIA, May 30, 1863
M. C. Sadler, Eq . .:
DEAR. SIR: During the night of Iday 19, 1863,
our Grocery and Provision Store, at North Sec
ond and Willow streets, took fire at about 2
o'clock A. m., and as the store was a two-story
wood building it burnt rapidly, and before the
fire engines could act upon the fire, our whole
stock of goods, including much combustible
material, and amounting to over $2,000, were
wholly destroyed. We bad one of your No. 11
Chilled Iron Safes, which was in the hottest
art of the fire, and it came out of the fire not
in the least injured, except the melting off of
the naive, plate and paint. The contents in
side were not affected in the least, and we con
sider the Safe just as good a protection against
fire now as before, and shall use it herealer
with increased confidence. The lock works as
perfectly as before the fire.
Yours truly, . • hicILLNIIS & CROFT,
- Late 429 North Second Street.
Attention to the above certificate is particu
larly reqpested, as it is the first trial of LILLIE'S
SAFES in an accidental fire in Philadelphia.
I would say to all parties who want a Fire and
Burglar-proof Safe that LILLIE'S WROUGHT
AND CHILLED IRON SAFES are much the
cheapest and the only real Fire and Burglar
proof Safes now made; and to those who want
simply a Fite-proof, I would say that LILLIE'S
WROUGHT IRON SAFE is fully equal in all
respecti to any of the most approved makers
and is sold at fully one-third less price. '
All parties interested are invited to examine
the-safes above described at my store.,
