The 6th Maryland Regiment, which was re
ported to have been cat np and almost de

marching.inio Harper's Ferry yesterday after
noon,With their flags flying, arms at rest, and

Col. Howe at their heed. It seemed Nreras
they bad risen from the dead, and thefr-riturn

It'appearetbat at the commencement of the
assault on Wiiiithester they were entirely cut
off, and being immitinded by an immense force
surrendered, and were taken back of the works.
In the confutden of the assault being made by
the rebels they, were neither disarmed nor
placed under guard, and Colonel Howe, know
ing the country well, and seeing au opportunity
to escape by a side road, formed his men in
line, and in the darkness of the eveningmovid
quietly off. They were compelled to take a
circuitous roadto reach the Ferry, but went
on their way rejoicing, with neither an enemy
in front nor pursuers in the rear.

The cavalry force of General Milroy consisted
of the Ist New York, 30th Pennsylvania, and
two companies of the 3d Virginia. General
Milroy ordered , them to retreat to Romney and
Cumberland, and he yesterday received a
dispatch announcing their safe arrival at that
place.
TILE EVACUATION OP
.The outer works at Winchester were carried
y the rebels by storm at six o'clock on Sunday
vexing, and the whole fortifications strongly
tweeted by a force of not less than fifteen thou
d men under General 'Ewell. It becomes at
once a question of ultimate surrender, or to
make a bold dash to force their way through
e enemy's lines, and a Council of War held
n Sunday night unanimously adgised an evac
ation. The large guns and his artillery were
spiked at once, and at one o'clock on Mon
day morning he abandoned , everything except
is homes and struck boldly through the ene
my's lines. The movement was so rapid that
he enemy was taken by surprise, and the night
being quite dark, the, movement, so far as the
troops immediately investing the works were
concerned, was accomplished with but little

.They were followed by cavalry and a great
many stragglers taken prisoners, but when four
miles this side of Winchester, at the junction
of the road leading from Berryville to Bunker
Hill and Martinsburg, they were intercepted by
a strong rebel force with artillery, and strongly

Milroy rallied his men and made several at
tempts to storm and capture their batteries, but

Daylight was now rapidly _approaching, and

AFFAIRS AT SAITER'S rases.
The telegraph is again working to Harper's
Ferry this morning, and, as far as can be ascer
tained, there has been no rebel movements on
the Maryland side or the riser. The telegraph
office ham been moved on to Abe Maryland
Heights,. and there is every reason to believe
-time if the enemy approach In force the town
will be abandoned, and the whole force ratite
across the river to the extensive wihks erected
on that strung position.
The folly okattumpting to stand a siege in
Harper's Ferry Widditnonstrated lastyrar, and
there is no doubt - it will be coon if it lute not
already been evacuated. Every preparation
has been made for such an emergency, and the
enemy , will übtaina but little plunder. The town
is thoroughly commanded from the keights,
and it can be made of bat little or no value to
the enemy.

LOOK Our ;Ow, Picarousals —Yesterday
several visitors in this city were robbed of their
wallets by the light fingered thieves who are
generally to be found where thus is any great
excitement. One man, from the eastern part of
the State had his watet taken, containing pro.
missory note, negotiable for the payment of four
thousand dollars, Writs money and other val
uable papers. Another gentleman fromßucks
county bad one hundred and sixty dollars
taken, and one or two others were robbed of
their pocket books, the respective amounts of
each we did not learn. This is making money
very fast, and we wonder the scamps are not
caught by some of their numerous victims.
