What West Fairview has Done for
the War. -
IJura 641, 1363.
The town of West Fairview, Cumbhrland
county, containing about ninety voters, has
sent nearly half that number to the relict' of
our suffering country. Thirteen are enlisted
for three years or the war, being scattered froml
Virginia to Tennessee. Seven more joined the
130th Regiment P. V., and were at Antietam
with M'Clellan, with Burnside at Frediricks
burg, and in all the late engagements :under
"Fighting Joe." The 127th contained fifteen,
who were in every engagement in which that
regiment participated. Three are in the United
States Navy and five with 'the militia kinder '

Ausrz or rcrroxso, June 4.
Yesterday at, noon, very unexpectedly to
everybody, the Engineer brigade was ordered
to the Rappahannock with pontoon bridges,
and ordered to proceed with the construction of
two bridges acroEs the river at the pointknown
as Franklin's crossing below the month of Deep
run and one mile below Fredericksburg.
The batteries from the Sixth corps; under
charge of Col. Tom . pkins, were likewise ordered
to cover the engineers in their work, and
Rowe'i division of infantry was ordered to the
spotty support the engineers and posh scrota
as soon as the bridges were laid.
The . only rebel force visible was a double
line of pickets, who lounged about very inno
cently, watching our operations closelyi
A.bortt rive o'clock, the Engineers commenced
unloading the pontoons, whereupon the rebels
ilopped into their rifle pits and began'picking
off our men. Our artillery, twenty guns or
more, immediately opened with shell, and for
two hours kept up a vigorous cannonade, with
but little effect, however, upon the sharp
shooters.
It became necessary to storm the rifle pits,
and at half-past six o'clock the 26th Now York,
Col. Monism, of Col. Grant's brigade, was
ordered into the boats. They at once: pushed
across under a dense fire, and landing on the
opposite side rushed upon the rifle pits with
cheers. The rebels vacated and' an. Our men
were instantly deployed as skirmishers, and in
a short time some of the . 62d • Florida was
brought in as prisoners. Other regiMents of
the Vermont brigade aeon followed in boats
until nearly the whole of ten brigades were
over.

began the work on the bridges, and at nine Y.

Our forces advanced cautiously across the
plain, dePlOying Skim:debars, very handsomely,
tharight resting on Deep Bun and the-left in
the vicinity of Bernard Rouse. By dark they
bad reached the Bowling Green road and posted
pickets for the night well out towardir the foot
of the timbered crests on which the enemy have

Church to a position in front of our lines. Gen.
Longstreet's corps has reinforced the troops in
Fredericksburg and slept there, last night. This

By this bold movement we have derrionstra
