HORSE 5TL4.1.1144 exD MIIRDIFIL—Mr. Pyle, living near Camp Morton, State of Indiana, some two daya.since lost two horses, and having some suspicion of the direction. they had gone, telegraphed to the sheriff of Howard county. The sheriff sent Mr. Stewart, his assistant, to Kokomo, to the stables of Nelson Cooper, horse dealer, to see if the horses could be found. As they expected both horses were there, also' the thieves, who were trying to make a trade with' Cooper. Mr. Stewart stepped up and informed the gentlemen that he would take care of the homes for the present, at the same time motion ing to Cooper to take hold of the othei horse. Upon this the thieves, who were'mounted upon the horses, jumped off, drew their revolvers and fired one shot, killing. Mr. Cooper instantly. Another shot wasfired at Stewart, but missed him, taking effect in a bystander, who lived but an hour after. "4' The scoundrel who did the shooting was ar rested, and, it is said, will be hanged today without trial. The other escaped; but the woods where he went are surrounded, and he will doubtless be captured. P. -S.—Since writing the above, we learn that the other thief has been caught, and that both were to be hanged at Kokomo to-day at twelve o'clock. A SLASIDER CASs.—The Pittsburg Evening Chronicle says:. The slander oise of Schultz vs. Hill was brought to a termination yesterday, resulting in a verdict for the plaintiff for $BOB. The plaintiff In the matter Is the betrothed of a soldier now in the army;' and it was- Charged that the defendant had used language impugn- ing her chastity. She mte not Mentioned by name, but was designated as the , hired girl of jolin Hartman. The testimony showed that at the time the slanderous words Were used, and for a long time, before, Hartman had no hired girl but plaintiff, so. that there could be no doubt as to the party meant by defendant when he used the expression boinplained. of. His Henor Judge Williams ruled that It was not necessary to mention the name of a party slandered. If the evidenze clearly pointed to the person that was enough. The case was con ducted by Mr. J. J. Seibeneck for plabitiff, and and Messrs. Marshail and Swartzwelder for de fence, and excited considerable interest. Army Committee of the United States Christian Commission for the City of Harrisburg. The United States Chris lan Commission, under full sanction of, the President,, , the Secre taries of Wa* and of the Navy, the Generals com manding the army of the. Union, and the Ad mirals commanding its squadrons,, has under taken by its own, volunteer, unpaid efforts to minister to the wants, religious and temporal, of every man, on land and on sea, wearing the national uniform. To co operate with them iu this =work, an 4auxilliary committee haS been formed in the city of Harrisburg. The three things chiefly wanted : by the Com mission in carrying on its great work, are money, hospital stores and delegates. The money., contributed to the Christian Commission' goes directly in publications and stores, to the relief and benefit of the noble men of our army and navy, with no material diminution for salaries, rents, freights or ex penses. It is the purpose of the local committee to present the object and claims of the. Commis sion to their friends and neighbors, and also to urge upon the pastors of churches in the central parts of the State, .to take-.up, in their congre gations, collections at such timerait may be con venient. . • The Committee also' appeal to the patriotic women throughout the towns' and villages of the central parts of the State to form Relief So cieties or Sewing Circles, for the purpose of pre paring or obtaining the various supplies needed, such as clothing, jellie.r, canoed fruits, home made wines and such other artiule4 as will con tribute to the comfort of the sick and wounded. We also appeal to the active and benevolent men in, these towns - and villages to ortrai.lz... for combined and efficient action a Working Com mittee,, who shall be in correspondence with the Central Conamittee'in Philadelphia. % We further desire. to find ac: ive, earnest Christian men men who can not only distri bute Bibles and good books, but can lead-prayer meeting, can wash and dress wounds, prepare food for the sick, writs letters for the feeble, counsel and 'comfort the dying and bury the dead, If necessary—in .brief, men who are ready, to do anything to bless the soldier, and are wanting a place to work. The committee . will be happy to afford them every facility of en gaging at once in this noble work. Such are the three things urgently needed by the Commission in prosecutiug its work in the army—money, hospital stores and delegates, for which we appeal to a generous public. Several hundred thousand men are breasting the tide of rebellion and suffering the losS of home and home influences and 'of all religions privileges, subject to the perils, calamities and vicissitudes of camp and battle field, and they appeal to us for help: From every division and squadron comes the cry for clothing; comfotts, delegates; and louder than all for the word. of God and religious reading matter. Other great movements and battles must oc cur before this gigantic rebellion is suppressed. Thousands more brave sons and brothers will fall. The time for generous, sacrificing and intense effort has not yet passed away. Every man and woman and child should feel himself called upon and authorized by the providence of God to do all he can himself personally, and all he can to urge others, in this good work of collecting and forwarding money and supplies for the comfort of the defenders of the country.
