AYER'S PILLS
ARE you sick, feeble and complaining? Are
you out of order, with your system de
ranged and your-feelings uncomfortable ? these
symptoms are often the prelude to serious
ness. Some fit of sickness is creeping upon
you, and should be averted by a timely use of
the right remedy. Take Ayer's Pills, and
cleanse out the disordered humors—purl t the
blood, and let the fluids move on unobstructed
in health again. They stimulate the functions
vigoraani activity. purify the
system frouribe obstructions whieth make- dis
ease. A cold settles somewhere in the bcidy,
and obstructs its natural functions. These, it
not relieved, react upoulhewselves and the
surrounding organs, producing general aggrava
tion, suffering and disease. While in this con
dition, oppressed by the derangements, take
Ayer's Pills, and see how directly they restore
the natualkaction of the system, and with it
the buoyant feeling of health again. What is
true and so apparent in this trivial and com
mon complaint, is also true in many of the
deep-seated and dangerous distempers. The
same purgative effect expels them. Caused by
similar obstructions and derangements of the
natural functions of the body, they are rapidly
and many of them surely, cured by the same
means. None who know the virtues of these
Pills mill neglect to employ them when suffer
ing from the disorders they cure, such as Head
ache, Foul Stomach, Dysentery, Billions Corn
plaints, Indigestion, Derangement of the Liver,
Costiveness or Constipation. As a Dinner Pill
they are both agreeable and effectual.

This is to certify that about eighteen months
ago, 1 commenced using Srsourso's Amitosis.
.hair was short, thin and rapidly falling out.
I had tried many Hair Tonics, Invigorators, &c.,
without receiving any benefit. Soon after using
the Ambrosia, my hair ceased falling ont, and
commenced growing so rapidly as to astonish
me. Now my hair is thick, soft, and glossy,
and is five feet four Inches in length—when let
down, reaching to the floor. This wond4fui
result I attribute solely to the ?me of Srsaurio's
AMBROSIA., as since I commenced using it I live
applied nothing else to my hair.

The Bombardment of Fredericksburg—Grossing the
Rappahannock—The Terrific Battle of Saturday
—A Quid Sunday —Re-opening of the River—
" Waiting."
nom OM SPROUL COMMON/WM
" Versi vidi," dare weeay also "viol f" garly
on the morning 'of the 11th our heavy siege
guns opened simultaneously upon•Fredericks
burg. Deserted by the inhabitants, rebel scouts
and sharpshooters took refuge there, from the
second Story windows of which the latter pick
ed off our men. This was the principal reason
for shelling the city. The rebel batteries be
yond evinced no disposition to reply. Late in
the afternoon the pontoon bridges having been
erected, two at the city and two a mile below.
The entire right and lett grand divisions, nuder
Generals Stunner and Franklin, prepared to
cross. Never was a grander sight witnessed
than the scene on the vast plateau opposite the
city. The sun was rapidly declining, and then
adding to this the burning of the doomed city of
Fredericksburg, and the assembling of over a
hundred thousand hearts beating high for Union
and Liberty, what more vivid fiction could be
called up.
The right grand division crossed with some
little opposition, but by dark were occupying
portions of the city which had been spartd from
destruction. The left had only partially passed
over the pontoon bridges, but the lateness of
the day, are presume, caused a countermanding
of the order. Next morning, however; the
attire division had safely crossed, long before
the sun had risen high enough to dispel the
heavy mist which concealed us from the rebel
batteries.
Friday was occupied principally in skirmish
ing, and determining the relative position and
disposition of the rebel forces. Our loss was
comparatively trifling. We found, however,
that the enemy were strongly foitifted, that the
centre was peculiarly impregnable and the only
hope was in our turning either one or the other
Bank. ;
Accordingly, when the sun of Saturday had
dispelled the mist, movements were made on
the left and right simultaneously. By noon the
battle became terrific, and thousands of gallant
hearts gave up their precious lives for their
country. The day was bright and clear—our
troops were in fine spirits, and with few excep
tions behaved gallantly and well. On the Jett
considerable headway was made, and the rebels
driven back from the ravine and woods to their
entrenchments with great slaughter. Our loss
was also heavy. The foot hold gained being
found untenable,
was subsequently vacated.
Our troops retired in splendid order. It is here
during the hottest of the fight that Gen. Bay
ard was mortally wounded and Gen. Vinton
lost his leg. The Pennsylvania Reserves, as
usual, displayed uncommon bravery, and their
lose we fear will be numbered by thousands.
How fearfully war has decimated the rankt of
these gallant sons of the Keystone.
On the right, to the rear of the city of Fred
ericksburg, the battle was the more hotly con
tested. The rebels were strongly posted behind
a stone wall, and when this was taken at one
time during the action they fell back to the
cemetery, which, being-surrounded by a heiivy
brick wall, afforded them good protection from
our infantry. Fourteen times did Humphrey's,
Wilson's and Getty's divisions charge the rebels,
but each time vier° obliged to retire before the
tremendous fire of the enemy. They fought
nobly and with remarkable courage, but Bo ter-
Atm was the fire that unwillingly they fell back
from charge after charge. What else can be
said than that our loss was terrible. Ilum
phrey's division, composed,entirely of trine
months Pennsylvanians, acted their part well,
yet suffered tremendously. It was long after
twilight when the struggles ceased. At last
night came down upon the sea of blood.
Sunday was calm and quiet, almost like the
solemnness of the Sabbaths, we know of at
home. Federal and rebels alike seemed to
remember the divine institution. Every toke
gratified that this holy day, at least, was
ed to them in peace, free from the thunder
:';es of battle.
;Monday came. Every one was confident of
idacess and although the rebel defences were
well-dimes and strong, the men eagerly desired
to be led against them.• Early in the day, the
rebels sent word that we should remove our
sick and wounded from the city, as they would
shell it by 2r. x. Careleas of this, howeVer,
it had been previously decided, as our position
was a critical one to remove all our wounded to
the opposite side of the river, and it was also
determined upon to recross the Rappahannock
durhig the night, by the entire army. Only an
occasional shot was fired in the day. After
dark preparations were made to retire to the
other side, and before day light the entire army
had re-crowed, the skhmishers fallen back and
the pontoon bridges removed.. Our division
(Brooks') was the last to retire. So quietly and
expeditiously was this whole movement effected
that broad 'daylight alone revealed to the rebels
that "the bird had flown," which they had
sought to ensnare:' At first they thought it
merely a tray , to catch them, but when thdir
skirmishers gradually approached the river, and
found our bridges taken up and gone, they only
realized hoW they, had been caught nicely nap
ping. It chagrined their leaders terribly.
Tuesday and Wthlneeday were occupied in
burying the deAd . , flag of truce having, been
rent out by Gen. Burnside' for that purpose.
What'the next move will be none knows.
Our entire loss may exceed twelve thousand—
that of the rebels about ten thousand. No
doubt the news of this severe battle will dis
pirit our northern friends. The men are 'as
enthusiastic as ever, arid why should those at
home dispair. The rebellion will eventually
be crushed out. Our antagonists, assisted by
their English and French friends, have become
formidable inwar, and our want of success,
not defeat, at Fredericksburg, merely delays
the date of treason's overthrow. We are not
permitted to write of the plans to be further
pursued, but enough to know that the army
has confidence In its leader—then why not the
people.
Tgue Case► or Art Iscar-CLAD.—As the battery
oI , OUT iron-clad steamer , Montauk weighs thirty
five tons,H is interesting to know that her
entire crew will be less than seventy men. An
old frigate required a ship's company of three
hundred sailors and landsmen, and a guard of
marines. These would man four of the new
fashioned ships, and While 'every 82 pounder

The Changes in the Cabinet
WASHINGTON, Dec. 20.
The resignation of Secretary Seward up to
noon to-day, had not been accepted.
Various rumors as to additional tenders of
resignations prevail. It is not improbable that
others will, if they have not already; relieve the
President from embarrassment in rearranging
his cabinet.
The fact of Secretary. Seward's resigaation,
and that of the Assistant fecretary, embodied
in a message, was placed in the telegraph office
in Washington at half past twelve o'clock on
Friday afternoon, by the agent of the Associated
Press. That at was not transmitted as address
ed, affords presumptive evidence that it was
suppressed by official direction. There is no
means of positively ascertaining the source of
this order. The circumstance, however, affords
much comment in all circles, in the absence of
any cause assigned why this important fact
should tie withheld at the telegraph office,
while the newspapers of Washington gave it
unmolested publication.
The order heretofore issued by the War De
partment had reference to the transmission of
such items of intelligence as would give infor
mation to the enemy respecting army move
ment., but the censorship seems also to extend
to all messages of whatsoever character.
The agent of the Associated Press claims it
proper to state this fact which may be explana
tory of the non-reception in some cases of items
of interest through the telegraphic channel.
The resignation of Secretary Chase is positive
ly stated by gentlemen of respectability, but
this correspondence will not vouch for the tact.
A member of a border State Committee ap
pointed by a recent caucus, states that in the
interview with the President yesterday he in
formed them that as to the emancipation pro
demotion, he acted from the firm belief it will
affect good results, bat it he could be convinced
to the contrary, he will modify his position
upon that subject ; his purpose being to do the
best he could under all the circumstances which
surrounded him.
