The members of this veteran organization an
nounce that they intend to give a ball on New
Year's Eve, for the purpose of accumulating a
certain sum of money to aid in liquidating the
debt which now bangs like en incubus almost
on their energies end usefulness. Since the
absence of so many of its members, the re
ceipts of the company have been materially
diminished. This absence, too, makes it ne
cessary that the managers of this ball should
throw themselves on the liberality of the citi•
sans for the support of the ball in question.
We otonot commend the Friendship Fire Com
pany to our readers and the patrons of balls too
highly, as one deserving of substantial support
and ret ognition.
The AMENAL iSs4.BArron.—lt was a foolish
and malignant spirit which induced the concoc
tion of the story in relation to loose powder in
the Arsenal ; but Gen. Russetl completely ex
plained the whole affair yesterday, which was
not the character of an explosion that the
Patriot eudeavored to impress on its readers.
The fact is that them is no more danger of an
explosion in the Arsenal than there is of a
collapse of the Lager Beer vault opposite.
All the powder in the establishment is in the
shape of "fixed ammueltion," that is secure in
packages and boxes, removed from all contact
with fire, and located where no possible danger
of an explosion can occur, except it would be
by a conflagration which might consume the
entire building.
Mr. George Forbes, the Superintendent of the'
Arsenal, is one of the most attentive and relia
ble men in the city, His whole care aid at
tention are devoted to this establishment—his
character as a man is at once security that no
accident will meg from carelessness, and any
of our citizens who desire to convince themselves
of the perfect safety of the migraine in tha
Arsenal,. can be satisfied by visiting that'
establishment and judging for themselves. The
whole statement about loose powder covering
the floor, ike., Is an exaggeration of the mean.: -
est kind, as it doge not contain a single word
of truth. •
A Baran or MB LATH COL. SDANONB.—A few
weeks ago, Mr. Samuel G. Powers, a sutler in
one of the' Pennsylvania regiments, while on
business in Washingtou, accidentally met with
a rebel prisoner who had in his possession a
military field giros, which he represented as
having teen the property of the Colonel of the
Fifth Pa. Reserves. In reply to a series of
inquiries, the prisoner substantiated his origi
nal assertion that he bad purloined the article
from the person of Col. Simmons while that
officer was lying wounded and s helpless on one
of the battle fields before Richmond. His state...

the identity of the article, it was purchased bb

that gentleman consigned the glass to the care
of Commissary General W. W. Irvin at this
place, with the request that he should present
it to the widow of the late Colonel.
The General, accompanied by a friend, dis
charged this agreeable duty last evening, at
the residence of the recipient of the gift, the
presentation resulting in an owasion of the
most plqasant social intercourse. Mrs. Sim
mons received the Bouvenier of her deceased.

Fire Arms. —On Tuesday last two small boys in
Cambria city—one of them a son of Owen Mc-
Caffrey, aged about five years, and the other a
,11011. of Peter Ryan, deceased, aged about four
years—got possession of a loaded pistol, with
which they were amusing themselves, when the
pistol went off in the hands of young McCaffrey,
the ball taking effect in the abdomen of young
Ryan, inflicting a mortal wound, from the effects
'of *ltch he died on Wednesday evening. The
father of the' little boy Ryan left home more
than a year ago In the ranks of the 56th Penna.
Volunteers, and was recently drowned while on
picket duty in South Carolina. His mother is
also absent from home at present, the little bey
being left In the ; care of his uncle, John Ryan.
Pomo' lwrwranurros.—This morning a female
character of unenviable notoriety, whose affinity
with ardent spirits has occasioned her almost
daily appearance before the Mayor, for an in
definite number of weeks, received gratuitous
lodgings in the School of Reform for such
characters. Her vulgar, sensual , look, when
brought np for sentence, betokened low and
debased instincts—a corrupt and callous heart,
destitute of even the slightest ray of intelli
gence or emotion.
Two soldiers arrested yesterday afternoon
and confined during last night, were heard
in their own defence. One of 'them had been
pulled for drunkenness, the other on suspicion
of entertaining sundry designs upon the pocket
book of hia companion. These suspicions, howl
ever, were obliterated by the protestations of
his brother In arms, who indignantly repudia
ted the idea of treachery on the part of soldier
No. 2. Both 'individuals were relieved of fur
ther indemnity by an oral admonition from his
Honor, to wifertra , " . 14 again.

kind belonging to persons, who, when fifteen
minutes out of bed, come to the breakfast table
and turn up their nose at a fat. chop, or a boiled

her verses ever after commonplace. Still, cab
bage and pork and Beans have much to do with
civlliastiori and society. A change of • diet is
the basis of health, and will do more for red
cheeks, attractive .eyes and "splendid" hair,
than all the recipes in the pharmacopeia.
Don't be particular as to your eating so long as
it is Well-cooked mid cleans There may come
reverses yet: for the most , independent of us,
when the bill of fare wilt be--BreAkfast, Salt
Pork fried and potatoes ; Dinner, Salt Pork
boiled and potatoes ; Supper, Salt Pork cold and
potatoes. The appetite would crave it, would
eat heartily of it, even become attached to it,
as the leech does toalocal inflammation. Don't
starve until you witness the end of the war—
that Is if you can avoid it.

The hero died. The severity of his wounds and
the fatigues of travel were too much for him.
Even among strangers there was pity for the
dead, and sympathy for his sorrowing friends.
His rest will now be glorious.

burg Post Office, and registered,for redemption,

Court of Dauphin county, will be exposed
to sale, on SATURDAY, the 10th day of
January, 1668, at the Court House in Harris
burg, at one o'clock, r. n.,.the following real
estate, viz : A certain lot of ground in the
city of Harrisburg, bounded and described as
follows, viz: Beginning on North street and
the line of - Widow Bell, thence by said line one
hundred feet to lot of Joseph Lewis, thence by
line of said lot five feet to property of E. S.
Bell, thence on line of said lot parallel with
North street fifteen feet to a post on line of lot
of C. J. Miller, thence by same one hundred
and five feet to Nortli street, thence by North
street fifteen feet to the place of beginning.
Whereon is erected a Two Story Frame House
and back building, well finished, with a three
feet alley in common with the adjoining build
ing, late the estate of Eliza May, dee'd.
