A correspondent of tbe American farm
er's Magazine helped to build a corn crib in
Vermont fifty-five years ago, which is stii
so good order, and in which no rat or m< u
was ever known to be. It is set on stone
pillars, two feet high, each capped by a
broad, flat stone, smooth on the underskk
THE WELL SWEKP. —The editor of the
Agriculturist, discussing the various kind
of patent windlasses ami curbs for wells,
comes back to the old-fashioned well swe< ;>
as the simplest, most durable, easiest, and
by far the best method of drawing watei
from wells not over twenty or twenty-five
feet deep. "Th old oaken bucket," hung
on a sweep, has some advantages, certainly
beyond those of association and poetry.
INDIAN SLAI PEBS.— Take a quart or
three pints ot sifted meal, a piece of lard
as big as a turkey's egg; poor a tea cup full
of boiling water over them, add a big
spoonful of salt, three or lor eggs previous
ly beaten, mix enough to thin them about
like muffiu batter; grease ihe grid.lle well
pour on two or three large spoonfuls; when
brown, turn. Serve them hot. It is a de-*
lightful bread.
BURNS.— An exchange saysthat nothing
on the face of the earth equals cool watei
as a remedy for Burns. " The burned Lpot
tionshoidd be soaked several hours in water,
persons whose hands have leen severely
burned have experienced such a relief by
placing them in a basin of water at tbe bed
side that they could sleep comfortably ai
night and wake and find themselves al
most as well as ever. The remedy is very
simple and easly tried.
To PREVENT RUST ON PLOWS.—A enr
respondent of the Rural World, gives tin
following which he says he tried success
fully. It is simple and wonji adopting
None but the plowman know* the advn.
lage of having a blight plow./ Tbe writi
has tried a gtcal many atlieles to prevent
plows and other agricultural implement
Irom rusting. There is nothing so good
and handy as patent axle grease. I have
used tallow, paint, and Japan .varnish, bit
the Dxle grease is always convenient an<
easily applied.
CURING HENS OK SETTING We hav
lately seen (we forget wliete) an easy ate
rational cure. It is simply t< put itn.lt
the hen a few eggs just about ready to hae
or put one or iw. young chickens tindera
the uight time; take her off anj put her i
a box with the young chicks a few hour-,
then take the chicks away from Iter am!
turn her out, and, in a majority of ca->,
she will, after clucking for a day or tvt -,
commence laying again, feeling, in Iter owe
mind, well assured that she has fulfill*
the maternal instinct .
LARD. ---The lard should be taken < F
the inwards as soon as taken out and seat
ed two or three days in spring water, chang
ing it twice a day, then fried in an in-n
kettle and kept for winter use The Ie >
should be cut up in small pieces and fried
nicely, and when a little cool strain into
tin pans; when cooled to the consistency
of honey turn it into a fat tub or a store
jar, cover tight, and set it in the atore-roon
If for summer use, wheu the weather be
comes woi m set tbe tub or jar on a tab!
or shelf in th* cellar, three or four feet
from the bottom. In this wav we keep
lard the year round without salt or even
trying once in the spring.
A MIXED IIUSBANDRT.—Ar ex
change in disquisition on fanning police
says: it will be seen that we must new
lay our plans for a mixed husbandry—
that is the products of the field, the or
chard and the garden. Not only these, bin
there is another small stem or two that
•kould not be overlooked, the railroads
will need ties and timber for track purpos
es, and this will make a new demand on
Hi), it is true that this is a crop not matur
ing in one year, but it is nevertheless a
crop that we moat plant and wait patiently I
for the harvesting. Our old forests will '
soon be stripped of timber for this purpose,
and the new supply must come from the
farms; we must, therefore, begin at once to,
supply this new demand.
LEAKS OF IHE FARM. —To feed nubbin- |
of corn or dry ground feed to cattle; be
cause it is n.-t properly chewed, as intend
ed by Nature, and as is necessary to be en
tircly digested.
To feed cattle in stacks, because they
waste more than they eat.
To allow cattle to roam at will all over
the eonntrt or tbe farm; because they tram '
pie and injure valuable grassland or gtain
crops. Keep them at home, soil th*-m. and |
have warm stables; you will save food and
economize feed.
To allow hay to lie late in the evening. Is
is better to neglect your com to secure
your by early.
To bum valuable timber for fuel, at pre*- j
ent prices of timher.
To let untullied land lie waste and un- :
Used when it would be quit easy to devote j
it to tbe production of trees for the purpo-e
of bnilding. The wood fuel any farmei
uses each winter would be worth in money
sufficient to purchase coal for two years.
To let cattle out of the staole on cold
days after eating dry fe- d and l*e sent ofl
to fill themselves with ice water and get a
gbid. or stand huddled up in some fence
