THE VARIOUS KINDS OF MANURE.
Opinions vary tmicli as to the value of
different kinds ot animal excrement, when
used as manure. The duns; of swine isprob
ably the most powerful. The dung ofsheep
is generally of two kinds, l'hatwbich forms
the uDper stratum of our sheepfolds is
commonly dry and brittle, possessing little
cohesion; while that below is more unct
uous and of a different consistence—being
decomposed. In any condition it is not suit
able for elevated lands which are dry; but
on low, moist, or rather wet lands, it is
ptopetly regarded as the best ameliorant
that can be applied. When sheep dung is
kept in a close heap and rathfer moist, it
decomposees rapidly; but when not com
pacted, with a chance lor its moisture to
escape, the process of decomposition is
more tardy. When applied to the soil or
voied over the surface by Hie animals it
decomposes more rapidly than most any
other animal excrement, and produces
more speedy and energetic effects. A too
large application often, from it great ener
gv, proves injurous to the crop, and pushes
vegetation with an unhealthy rapidity, and
should therfore he used in less quantitieus,
both as regards weight and volume, 'than
anv other manure. From the excrement
of sheep, both solid and liquid, there is
eliminated a large quantity ot ammonia.
This gas in not without its value to the
farmer, of this we arc not now prepared
to speak. In prepaiiug dung for agricul
tural purposes, it is well to mix it with a
liberal quantity of some dry material which
will absorb the volatile products of de
composition and become good loam, muck,
refuse hay, straw, and other similar sub
stances, are valuable. Rut whatever raa
teial is made use of for this purpose, it will
be necessary to pitch the mass "over fre
quently, and the more carefully this is done
the mora valuable will be the manure when
used.
Tne excrment of poultry—hens, turkeys,
Ac., though limited in quantity on most
farms, is verv energetic and of great value
In its nature it is very different from the
dung of quadrupeds, and appears to con
tain a substance which is mostly composed
of a'ibumen. VanqueliDe analyzed this
dung and discovered a market differeuce
betwen that voided by brooding hens.
Itjba6 been asserted b> those who have
experimented carefullyjw.th the excrement
of fowls, and particularly that of hene.
that in order to derive the greatest pos
sible benefit from it, care must be taken to
comminute it finely before applying it, and
to apply it only to the without cov
ering it up.-\Yhen it becomes necssary to
use it as a starting manure, it should al
ways be mixed with some qualifying man
ure—such as plaster, ashes, or common
mould. This is necssary in order to abate
its natural energy and cause it to probably
act for a longer time. In compost it is
probably the most valuable ingredient that
can be used. A steep made of this sub
stance may be profitably used in irrigating
gardens. It has sometimes been recom
mended as an infallable remedy for the
various evils resulting from the ravages of
the "striped bug," as well as from the at
tacks of various otherjnsectiveous dejyreda
tor —the attacks of which so often prove
detrimental to certain planta. A very val
uable artificial guano is made by a mixture
of ben excrement, muck,and other articles;
but care must be exercised in using it, as
it is too powerful tor many plants, and
•honld not be placed in contact with eith
er the roots or stalks, — Germantoton Tel
egraph,
CORN BKEAD. —One quart of corn meal
one pint of wheat flour, two eggs and n
little salt, with sour buttermilk sufficient
to make a very stiff batter. Mix thorough
ly, and then add or.e teaspoonful of soda,
dissolved in a little hot water. Stir this
in and pour into well greased pans, suffi
cient to te one and a half inches thick
when cooked. I'lace in a - hot oven and
bake until done, sav half an hour. . Carry
to the table hot. if all should not be used
bake over again, and it is about as good
as when first baked.
Haifa pint of flour and one egg will be
very good, but not quite as good as the
above.
The sourer the buttermilk the better,
if it is not bitter. Success depends very
mncb on the due proportion of acid and
alkali.
Fine meal makes much better bread
than coarse. If it does not keep as well,
provide less at one time. Dent, or gourd
seed corn makes better meal than flint
corn.
Some are shocked at the idea of eating
drugs with their food, and exclaim against
the use of alkali in cooking. Let such con
sider that acid neutralizes the caustic prop
erty of the alkali ; and if they never eat
anything more unhealthy than that, they
will do well.
DIAKSBCEA IN FOWLS.— The causes are
a scanty supply of grain, which necessi
tates an excess of green food, or an un
wholesome dietary of any description, aie
the nsual causes ot* this complaint. The
The treatment is simple ; five grains of
powdered chalk, the same quantity of
rhubarb, and three of cayenne pepper, may
be administered ; and it relaxation is not
speedily checked, a grain of opium and
one of powdered ipecacuanha may be giv
en every five or six hours.
REIIEDT FOR COLIC IS HORSES —Give
a half tumbler of spirits of camphor in a
pint of warm water ( cold wjll do ); if not
relieved iu fitteen mi nuts, repeaPlhe dose.
Give nothing else. No bad effects, after
and a sure cure.
£&• If cranberries are dried a short
time in the sun and placed iu bottles filled
with them, and then clottd with sealing
wax. tbe berries will keep in good con
