CONDITION OF THE CROPS IN JULY.
Tb following is mi. ab't ract from "Coiwli
tiotj of the Crop*" in the Maith'v Exporter
of Agriculture for July :
ComK—l be matt remarkable fact it con
nection With the corn crop of the present .
year it lb* great w.crvaae of its acreage in
ike tooth, (be difference in number of acrec
between the piesent and preceding year be
ing more than two million* and a half. A
a light decrease it apparent in the eas'ern
seaboard State*, resulting frotn the nnpr >-
pmoaa character of the recent cold, wet and
backward spring, which sadly interfered with
planting. A careful estimate acreage ahow*.
a decrease of 48 GOV acrea n t'ght S't'e
and an increase of Z, 108,210 aciein the re
mairing State* making about 3MA*,OOO in
the United State*, an advance of nine per
cent. The per centago of Louisiana reaches
Co, that of Arkanias 40, that of Kansas 30,
Mississippi 25, Kebra-ka 25, Missouri 22
Texa* 18, Minnesota 18, lowa 15. Illtnots
and Ohio 8, Indiana 4.
The drought in the sooth has retarded
somewhat the growth of c>rn. but it* condi
tion in that section it is generally gxJO. In
the east, on the first of June, the gr..nh a
emalt, but the weather of July has brought
a large poitiun of the crop into spleod.d con- ;
dition.
WHEAT The condition of wleat, AS
shown, io the July returns, is aboYe the aTer
age for last year in ail the State* except Ver
mont. Connecticut, the Carolina', Georgia,
Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas ami
Nebraska. The season lias been peculiarly
favorable to the growth and ripening of this
great bread crop in all except the southern
State*.
The favorable report* are *o numerous, in
the western Stales especially, that it is un
necessary to give them in detail. The goner
al tenor of rports is that ''winter wheat
bids fair to be the largest cr p we have had
for many J ears i" " the yield will be im
mense ''the prospect *> never better for
a large crop the weather has been remark
abty seasonable '"the universal opinion is
ttal the crop will be the largest ever grown
ia the country'crop# all over the coontty
were never in a flourishing condition." Our
Lafayette Wiscoo*'o<eorrespondent he
has never seen in a residence of 40 years a
better prospect fur wheat, aa well a* all
other crops, and that the same might be said
of several adjoining counties. In II ghian i
county, Ohio, the acreage of winter wheat is
estimated at three limes that of last year,
and in Monroe county, Missouri the acreage
of wheat ia thought to be three-fold thai o'
18g7. In Kalamazoo oounty, Michigan ar,
unusual yield is reported, the best fields be
tag estimated at 41> bushels per acre y and to
Bourdon county, Kansas, it is claimed that
many farmers will show a similar yield.
Exceptions to this showing tre freqnent in
the south where rust was more or les pre
valent- Some loss from the same cause re
sulted in Maryland and in the similar lati
Uides in the west. In a few localities loss
from lodging is reported. Unusual exemp
tion from winter hilling is manifest, report*
of damage from freezing coining only from
northern Vermont, some portions of the
Ohio valley, and a still more southern belt.
Very few accounts of destruction by the
nudge are received. In Lebanon c-.uuty,
Pennsylvania this insect is charged with ta
king ona-third of the crop, in Clinton, In
diana some loss ia also sustained from in
sects. In Queene Anne, county, Maryland,
the extreme heat shrieveted the grain in ri
pening, leaving it light and poor.
Reclaiming Harsh Soil.
Some soil is hard—cGy-bOtmd—and will
crack. Such soil requires sand. But a*
sand is too expensive to apply, other meau
will have to be resorted to.
One of these (and the foremost ) is, to plow
in the fall or early winter—plow dry. The
elements are the best ameliorators. At the
•aire lime may be applied to advantage.
Next in order, and of great conequenc •,
is cropping the land with certain kinds of
grain, Ac. Peas will mellow Ihe soil. So
will buckwheat. And so will clover. These
can all he applied without any difficulty, not
being hoed crops that require fine tillage.
Aal iff soil turned up in the fall and well
limed, the lime harrowed in, followed by a
crop of peaa, and sown in the fall to clover,
will, when the sward, a few years therafti r,
is turned down, show an improvement that
amounts to a complete change. The land
DOW ia in a fair workable order, and needs
but manure plowing when dry enough (and
usually io the fall) to keep it in good Condi
tior. Of all things, a clay so lis the m'vt
critical to manage.— Colmun'a Rural World
