CAUSE OF DISEASE.
A hungry mare, (hat had been accustomed
to eat nothing but grass, with a young colt
at her side, was fed a few quarts t f corn. A i
painful death soon followed. Instances are
by no means rare in tvb-ch death has .been i
the certain and inevitable reati t of a violent
exercise ; of driving a horse a little too fast
when his stomach is full; of compelling a
horse to perforin % long journey without r*st
or food, and then allowing it to have free a
cess to an abundance of preen, succulent 1-OH
in the exhausted and jadt-d condition in which
the end of this hard journey found him ; id
confining in cold airy stables when they hart
been accustomed o warm one# : of being
gbu' U P tn fool stable-, not h'f ventilated
and blanketed warmiy, and glutted with the
must nutritious food and allowed no exer
cise ; of bemg exposed for hour* to the pelt- ;
ing and inclement storms of winter, wi h"u
the necessary protection, alter being driven
furiously.
It is, doubtless, farthest from the infen
tions cf every one to do anything, or leave j
it undone, which will result in injury to hi
animals. It is an excellent rule to see tha'
animals art always fed and made comfortable ,
before our own wan l -* are supplied. When
working annual* are weary they must res'.--
When them meal tun* cotae* they must slop !
and be fed, whether they have performed
their accustomed ta-k >r not. In driving on !
the highway* let rad cars, omnttu-ees and J
express vehicles leave you far in the distance
Let the impetuous roadster disdain y-ur de
liberate pice. Lt Jehu (K ng* tx 'J - ') and
a retinue of a while to*n*hp pass you in ;
their impetuosity. They hve the highway ,
behind them. Let da k and dreary ntgfit ■
come on b*f >re you reach your place of d*— |
tination, but let not your horses be driven
beyond their natural gtit.
A GREAT FAHR.FFF.RS HAZXX3.
The successful life of Mr. Jacob S-rawr/he
prince of American farmers, attributed to th
close observance of the following max-tBS, or- i
iginated by hitnelf.
When you wake do not roll over, but roli :
out. It will give yon time to ditch all y .ur ,
sloughs, break tbetn up, harr.w them, ant J
sow with timothy and r<i clover. One bo-h- \
el of clover to two bushels of timothy is j
enough.
Make your fence high, right and strong, s
that it will keep cattle and pigs out. Il you j
have brush, make ycur lots secure, and keep
the hogs from the cattle, for if the corn is j
clean they wtil est il better than if it is not. j
Be sure to get your hands to bed by seven '
o'clock, tbey will rise early by free ot cir- i
cumstances. Pay a band, if he is a good one, |
pay him a little more ; it will encourage to
to do still better.
Always feed your hands a* well as you do i
yourself ; for laboring men are the bone and j
sinew of the laud, and ought to be wed .
treated.
I am satisfied thai getting up early, indue- [
try and regular habits, are the best medi
cines ever prescribed for health.
Whan rainv, bad weather comes, so that !
you can't work out doors, cut and split your !
wood.
Make yoor tracx, fixing your fence or a
gate thai is off its htnews, i r westGr K ard j
iog your burn where the wind bs blown th 1
tiding off, or patching the roof of you baru
or house. • j
Stady your Interests closely, and do pet '
spend any time electing presidents, senators
and other small e ffi- era, or ta>k ng of hard
times when spending your tune whittling
•tore boxes, etc.
Take your time and make ca'ciria i-ns. •
don't do thing in a l urry, but du theui at
the right titnr.arid keep your body imployed.
WHAT THE FARMER MIST Know—The
Jlurul World says :
The farmer like the business m.m tnu-t
know what he is doing ; he must have some
pretty decided idea of what he is to sccom- <
plish—in fact, must calculate it beforehand.
lie must know his soil—that i f each lot >
not only the top. but the subsoil.
lie must know what gran s and graves
are best adapted to each.
lie must know when is the bet time to
work them, whether m the 'all or spring, or
whether they need summer tallowing.
He must know the condition in which
ground must be, when plowed, so that it be
not too wet or too dry.
He must know that some grains require
earlier mowing than others ; and what those
grains are.
He must know how to put them in.
lie must know that if it pays him to have
machinery tn aid him, ins-eid of muscle.
He must koow about stock, and manures,
and the cultivation of trees and the small
fruits, and many other things ; in a word,l e
must know what good experienced farmers
know. Then he will not guess—will run no
risk.
Sore shoulders in working hors--
" may bo effectually prevented by cutting a
piece of leather into a shape so ** to lie snug
ly between the shoulders of the horse and
the collar. This sends iff all the friction, a*
the collar slips and wves on the leather and.
not on the shoulders of the hor-e. -Chafing
is caused by friction; hence, this remedy is
a plausible one, and is much letter lhau n
ing a slip of leather und> r the collar.
LEMON SHEHBET.—Dissolve a pound and a
half of loaf sugar in a quart of water, add
the juice of ten lemons, pros the lemons 6o
as to extract not only the juice, but the oil
of the rind, and let the skins remain awhile
in the water and sugar; siriin through a
sieve, aud then f it lik* toe cream. '
