fiirrn Carta "futcta. cv Farmers, and Agricultural men generally •re requested to contribute to this Department, us it Is from their experience that we hope to gain some thing of interest for our readers. HINTS TO FARMERS. The following terse complication of wisdom was communicated to the New England Farmer. Never keep'animals on short allowance— iffyou starve them, they will surely starve you. Although in draining land thoroughly your purse may be drained, yet the.full crops that follow will soon fill it again. Always give the soil the first meal. If that is well fed with manure, it will feed all else, plants, animals and men. Heavy carrot crops for cattle will soon re turn carats of gold. Fences operate in two ways—if good, they are a fence, if poor, offense. Many a farmer, by too sparingly seeding his meadows, has to seed his whole farm. Every farmer should see daily every ani mal he has, and inspect his condition. Weekly visits, a* is the case with, some, soon result in weakly animals. Tiie rate comfortable y>u can keep your animals the more they will thrive. A good C'w is a valuable machine ; the more lood she properly digests, the greater the profit. A few roots daily, to all the stock, are as welcome as apples to boys and girls. Iron shoes on sleds last a life time. They are really cheaper in the end than wooden ones. All animals are fund of sunshine. Lei them bask in it, if possible. Xeplaee all the bars, where you often pass, by strong gates, and then wonder that you did'nt do so before. A borrowed tool, if broken, should be promptly replaced by a new one. A nice sense of honor in such matters is much to be Commended, It seems strange that housekeepers don't buy pails and tubs with brass hoops and trimmings. They cost a little more at first, but last wonderfully. Where a watering tub is needed it should be a deep one, and set partly in the ground. It will not freeze then in the coldest weather so as to give much trouble. MEASURING BOXES AND BARRELS,—A bar rel contains 10,752 cubic iDches. A box twenty-fuor inches long by sixteen inches w -ie and twenty-nine inches deep, that is on the inside, will hold just a barrel. A hall barrel—Make a box fur this .twenty four inches by eighteen and fourteen inches deep. This will contain 6,3~6 cubic inches, or just half a barrel. A bushel—This has 2,150 2-10 cubic in ches. A bushel bo* will he lg 8-10 inches square and eight inches deep. A half bushel—A box twelve inches long by 11 210 inches wide and eight inches deep will hold half a bushel. A peck—A box eight inches by 8 420 inches square and eight inches deep is a peck. A half peck—ls eight by eight inches ■quare and four 2-10 inches deep, or 298 2-10 cubic inches. A half gallon—This contains 134 4 10 cubic inches. A box seven by four inches and four 8 10 inches deep has just that quan tity. A quart—Four by four inches square aDd fsa 2 10 inches deep. TROUBLE WITH MILK. —Can you give roe try explanation or remedy for the turning of a cow's milk into whey after milking 1 I have a large number of cattle and occasional ly some of them will become completely worthless, in consequence of their milk turn ing into whey. When milked, tbe milk looks healthy, but after standing a short time a thick curd settles in the bottom of the vessel the cream rises to the surface, and between the cream and curd a large body of milky water collects, rendering the whole unfit for use. Churning this milk produces sweet milk, which, if left standing returns sgain to milky water. The Springfield Republican publish es tho following remarkable tfFtci of the re cent dampness : Robert Bachelder, of Salis bury, has a ll'ick of 28 sheep, which during the winter, were housed in a place where their wool became filled with hay seed. They have been out to pasture for several weeks, and the seed has sprouted, and they are now bearing about with them a crop of grass two inches in length. xrx- The best plan for any one to adopt when tier* are any insects on fowls, is to let them sleep on pine shavings, and the turpen tine will soon drive away all in-ects. I some times sprinkle it on my dog's bed and the fleas soon leave. To PRESERVE BITTER —Take good, sweet, June butter, work th buttermilk carefully out ; then add a handful of salt to a pound of butter ; pack a good layer of butter in your stone jar, then a layer of salt y repeat until the jar is full j then place a good wi ight j on top, and stand in a good eool place ; cover with brice to bear an egg. RAILROAD CAKE.— One eup of white stigar, one cup of flour, two tablespoonsfuls of melt ed butter, three eggs, one teaspoon of essence of lemon. All ingredients stirred in together and baked in a long, narrow tin. WHITE CAKE.— On*-half cup of butter, one half cup of cream, two cups ot sugar, three cups of flour and tbe white* only tf four eggs. Flavor with fresh lemon juice.
