CERTAIN CURE TOR FOUNDER. —As soon as
you discover that the horse is foundered take
him to the nearest branch or stream of water
end tie bim in it standing in the water near
ly up to his belly—his head being eo high
that he cannot drink. If the weather is
warm, let him stand in the stream several
hours ; then take him out, rub his legs thor
oughly to promote circulation, and again tie
him in the water, il he is still lame. By re
peating this process two or throe times, the
horse will be effectually cured. If the weath
er is enld when the horse is foundered, that
is,' if it is in the winter, the horse must not
be allowed to atand in the water more than
abont twenty minutes at a time,he should be
taken out and his legs rubbed diligently till
they bceome drj and warm and the circula
e( tho blood made active, and this process
must be repeated till tbe horse is cured,
which will be generally within twenty-four
hours. Thie remedy will cost nothing, can
do no possible harm, and will in every in
stance, enre, if the disease has not been too
long standing. Don't be afraid to try it.—
Rural World.
How TO GET SLEIP.— This is to many per
sons a matter of high importance. Nervous
persons who are troubled with wakefulness
and excitability, usually have a stroug ten
dency of blood on the brain, with cold ex
tremities. The pressure of blood on the
brain keeps it in a stimulated or wakeful
state, and the pulsations in the head are of
ten painful, Let them rise and chafe the
body and extremeties with a brush or towel
or rub smartly with the hands to promote
circulatiy, and withdraw the exce?si\f
amount of blood from the brain, and they
will fall asleep in a few moments. A cold
bath or a sponge bath, or rubbing, or a good
run or a walk in the open "air, or goir.g up
and down stairs a few times before retiring,
will aid in equalizing circulation and promote
sleep. These rule are simple and easy of ap
plication in tbe castle or cabin, and may
ministA* to the comfort of thousands who
wou'd free'y expend money for an anodyne
ho promote ''Nature's sweet restorer, balmy
sleep.''
Pi'MPTFins IMONUST Coa.—Almost all
"oW fashioned farmers" take off a crop of
pumpkins from their cornfields, much to the
annoyance of the theorist who demonstrates
to his entire satisfaction that the one crop
must detract from tho full force of the other.
But the most careful experiments show no
toss to the com. The same weight results
from an acre, with or without the pumpkins
It does at first thought seem as if it ought
not to be so. If it takes just so many bush
els of corn to fatten a hog, k is not clear how
we are to fatten two from the one quantity.
This is the argument of the theorizer. But
the facts are as we hare stated ; and the
reason probably is, that the pumpkin and
corn feed on entirely different foods in the
soil, to that the one can go on wukoui the
ether.
A RAILROAD TRAIN STOPPED BY THE ARMY
WORM. —The Corinth (Miss.)/ Modle Farmer
for May, says the army worm is on the
march there in amazing force. The Farmer
makes the following astounding statement:
The movement and number of this insect
is astonishing. The army worm has appear
ed in this eoontry noar the State line, and
are now moving southward. Their breadth
to about two miles, and they are stripping
the forest of all its foliage in their path.—
There are so many millions that last week
they actually atopped the freight train on
the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. The
worm were so thick on the track that they
accumulated on the wheels until it caused
the drivers to slide on the rails. We don't
think this is tbe regular army worm, but a
species of insect some smaller and not so
destructive to vegetation.
FTYDJTOPHOBIA. —An aged German forest
Beeepcr, who is on the verge of death, has
published a secret enre for hydrophobia,
which he says be has used with success for
fifty years, saving many men and animals
from a horrible death. The wound must be
bathed as soon as possible with warm vine
gar and water, and when thie has dried, a
few drops of muriatic acid ponred upon the
wound will destroy the poison of the saliva
and relieve the patient from danger. This
cure appears in the Leipsic Journal, and we
give it as we find it.
WOUNDS IN SHEEP.— Tkke the leaves of
the elder tree and make a strong decoction,
and wash the parts affected two or three
tomos a day, and yoo will not be troubled
with flies or worms. It also removes fever
from the wound, and is healing.
DIARRBOTA IN CATTLE.— Take half a pint
of bran and pour boiling water on it, and cov
or with a thick cloth until nearly cool ; then
■train and give the tea to tbe affl cted animal.
Two or three doses are aura to cur e*—Rural
American.
COSTIVKNESS IN SSCIP. —Two tablespoon
ftiU of castor oil every twelve hours. Or give
one ounce epsom salts. This may be assisted
by an injection of warm water, weak suds
and molasses.
RINCBON*.— Mix equal parts of turpentine
and lamp oil, and apply to the part affected
night and morning, rubbing it well into the
hair around the hoof.
ITCH IN SWINC.— Rub tho animal with
equal parts of lard and brimstone, and put
them io a clean pas.
