EDITOR DEMOCRAT •—From a notice in jour paper soliciting oorresp..ndenre in the way of local news. I venture —nutwiibstan ling my inability—to make a trial As regards matters in nn.l alsiut Nicholson since the commencement of the New Year, the first strik ing feature on entering our thriving village on the morning of the first day. was finding the Stores all chased, giving the finn the appearance of a Sabbath mesning, which took many of the out town people by surprise, and disappointing those in pursuit of the necessaries as well as dainties of life, to make the New Year pass agreeably and happily. The Stores were closed in [ ursuanee of arrangements made the day before by the merchants. I hive not learned the precedent or principle that governed their course, but conclude tbero was a controlling influence some where Christmas, 4th of July, 22.1 of February, and Thanksgiving day, are considered by many to be holidays, but no one could come to such oonclusioDs from former observances in this town ; and why the first day of January should be so observed is not known by the '' oluest inhabitant," and it is hoped will be satisfactorily explained by some of the younger inhabitants. Our town was very quiet considering the opportu nities we had and the privilege that many take on that day, by indulging in the •' ardent" or what is now called " prohibits," for notwithstanding the prohibitory law" for little Wyoming, with all its pains and penalties for the violation thereof, there is no diffi ulty in obtaining all that one needs in the way of the " good critter," and from appearances or some occasions, there are some who get more than is raally for the benefit of themselves or tbeir families, but which cannot be remedied by the course taken, at least until the people become educated to believe that their wise neighbors are capable of judging what is best to eat or drink, which I think will be a very long lime. lam satisfied of the fact that we hara two as well regulated hotels in this village, under all the disadvantages of not being permitted to take a license and the opjo-ution they meet with from the numerous prusecution9 by those opposed to the sale of intoxicating liquors, as on Tormer occca •ions and even more lavorable circumstances. One of the proprietors, Jerome Lord, in the Sisk House; the other our well knjwo townsman John Niver, on Main street. I have yet to learn that any respecta ble gnest has ever left cither dissatisfied- The repeal of the prohibitory law, for some time past, has been coolly discussed, and petitions numer ously signed for reinstatement of the license law, aod from my observations, having a good opportuni ty toiknow and judge the feelings of our citizens, I do not hesitate to say that three-fourths of the voters ate in favor of the License Law. .On the morning of the 2d we had the startling news from Glcnwood that Calvin Moore, of Factory ville, was killed in an altercation orith one Iltne, a resident of Lenox-but shortly after tbe news the " veritable" Cal. Moore made his appearance at Niver's Hotel alive, but with a bad looking face ; his eyeg blacseued and a cut about five inches long from his temple down the cheek, penetrating through into the mouth Dr. Blakeslee closed and dressed the wound in his usual scientific manner. It is said by some who saw the " melee," that Moore did not get any more than he deserved ; but as it is unsafe to place too much reliance oa statements of the kind, I shall not pretend to judge. I have just leamed that two of our town boys— who having respectable parents, I suppress their names one eight, the other twelve years old, bad what they thought a nice time on New Year's day. The younger boy finding a pocket book belonging to Frank Pratt, containing about S7O, made it known to the other, and dliided the money with him, tore ! up the papers, threw the pocket book into the creek, and started for Scran ton, where they safely arrived and commenced for a good time in the way of Oyster Stews, Cigars, Arc Two older brothers of tbe youngest boy being at Scrantou, and thinking mat ters not all right from their young brother's appear ance, questioned him about being so " flush," when he owned up. The boys were brought back, and abont sl9 saved and returned to tbe owner. The Township Elect lonaio this County take place on Tuesday the 14th inst. We hope no Democrat will feel indifferent as to the result, or ; get the impression that a local, Township election ; should not be attended. It is important (hat the ! smallest and most unprofitable offices—even those j that involve much trouble and labor with little or i no compensation should be filled by capable and hon- ; est men An incompetent and blundering Poor-mas- ' ter, Supervisor or School-director, may inflict far greater injury upon the citizens and tax-payers than . an incompetent Justice of the Peace could do. The J blunders of the latter may be remedied, or the peo ple may choose to do their business with one better , qualified. But—as to tho officers first named—they must act and many of their acts if wrong cannot be remedied. The office involving the greatest la bor and trouble with the least compensation should : from that fact be looked upon as the more honors- I i ble ; amLshould in all cases be assumed by meu uot | ! only competent to perform the duties, but who have the time and inclination to do so, for the public wel- j faro without regard to compensation. . We wish also to particularly enjoin npon our dem ocratic friends in the different Townships, the impor tance of electing intelligent and responsible Demo crats to the offices of Judges mud Inspectors of Elec- | tions—an las many of them as possible. Several important elections are to occur within this year,— . We wish these elections to be oonducted fairly and | according to the Constitution and laws- We want | all men to vote who are legal voters, and Done oth- j ers Our enemies have shown a disposition, where \ \ ever they had the power, to ignore both, the Consti- j tution and laws for the purpose of excluding demo -1 cratic votes—showing, that with them —patty sue- : cess, out-weighed even the obligations of aD oath ! Let Democrats look to this matter and see to it .that every man—democrat or republican—who has the ; right to vote, be allowed to do so.
