SPRING BULBS.
Now is the time tc se' atr.ut planting the*e
ahowv spring flowers. For out d • r co'ture,
select a sheltered nook, il pnstib s, as they
are in flower so early, that in 'hi< latfad<*
they are apt to get injured by tht-erdd win ;§•
The first tot to ••pen t- h.- Snowdrop—a
teat little wtiite bell-shaped fi wtT.foih-wed
pre"y Soor. by the Cr-cti3 of -evtral c-h r- ;
then come the Tlyacititha. then the gaudy
tulif s. Besides these there are a-, vera! oth
er sorts, the c mmon Daffodil being well
known. There are *e?vra! pretty varieties of
the Narcissus and a few eh' u!<j away- be se
lected among the rest ol the bulb*.
A stately plant is the Crown Imperial,
poshing up its strong stem at a grtat ra'e he
fore even the frost ha- fairly left the ground
these are perfectly hardy.
The C'.mmon Fntielarv, has singularly
marked flowers, is quite hardy and attrac
tiye.
The feathered Hyacinths are quite neat
and pretty, the common grape Hyacinth be
ing of this family ; they too are hardy. The
Jonquils are similar to t'e S*rci--u.
Before planting, spade op toe soi! anl
add a good coaring of very r <t*n manure ;
a sandy soil suits them brat. Plant the lar
ger buibs With the crow ri two or three Ttiche
below the surface—the smalter kinds no;
qaitssodiep—ja-t before winter sets in pu'
oer a coating of manure t< protect parish
from frost—to he removed early in the
spring.
Hyacinths may be grown in pure water in
gla-ses made f>r the purpo<-,tije dark color
ed glass being het. Solve' the -.tnd-i
bulb-, arid put them •• they >;■ ly "<uch '.
water ; as the wattr la-c ttie- dir'y - r ev,p
rate 6, add lr<h, the Saint temperature a tht
room, and rami water. They d b-t kep' in
the dark for a tnon'h, s > that the r-c.t- g. in
advance of the top ; the same is true of bolt s
grown <n pots or in •*. Tue imported bulb
are best for growing in pots or ott.er fincv
articles, as the bulbs have been prepared
wi'h pecu :ar reference to give ash .wy tl -*
tr. Once grown this way, they are couu sra
tively useless for trie same porjn.se, but make
very good bulbs for bolder plan-in*.
Bulb growing is a bu-iit-s- • f.itaelf in II >1
land. There labor i cheap and the -oil
adapted, and the growers I.ave the market
of the world 'o supply. As, even ; r, England
no attempt is made to grow their own bu!b-f
for forcing purposes many thousands of dol
lars are naturally sent from this country f r
these onions, as the Dutch call them.—Prat

LIBERAUTY IN FARMING.
thi art and almost in this art alone, "it
is the liberal hand that maketh r ch."'
Liberal)'} - in providing u'ens'U is the sav
ing both of time and labor. The mare per
fect h'B instruments, the nt'-re prod table are
they.
So also is it in his working cattle and h;
stock. The most perfect in their kinds are
ever the most pr fiiible.
Liberalit} in good barns and warm shelters
is the cause of health, strength and comfort
to animals, cause# them to thrive on less food,
and secure* from dtt ger all sons of crop*.
Liberality also in the provision of food f< i
domestic animals is the source of flesh, mus
cle and manure.
Liberality to the earth in seed, culture an I
compost, is the source ol it* profit.
Thus it is in agncol'ure, as tit every part
of creation, a wise and paternal Providence
has inseparably cot)meted our duty and hap
piness.
PUTTING DOWN BUTTER. -In putting down
butter, there should be an effort at uniformity
• throughout the operation. This i* not hard
of attainment, hence a failure should not be
imputed to bad lock, but to negligent disre
gard of the conditions of success. Work th<
butter clear ol the milk to begin with. See
that no ba'rs or n.reads meander through it,
In salting, if in doubt as to the quantity to
be u*ed, prepare a pound, >r ie-s, by trial.tilt
the proper quantity ha* been a-cerilined
When the taste i* **"fi"d, observe h-* *m.
proportions in successive churning* till the
tub or crock is filled. Jlia result will l>e a
mass of uniform character, free from vein* of
milk or ufidis-olvetl salt, ol hairs i r strings,
and fit to be eaten with the eyes open and
the sense" of tas'e and smell active in the
performance of their allotted function*.
GOOD FEEDING.— Feed liberally. Feed at
regular times. There is no profit inp>raoi
mals of any description. 1 hey eat ui"r and
fare worse than animals hbeially fed,and tiny
return less profit. See that the fond i- clean
and pa'atahle. The hen* on the hav-m-.w
and the dirty feet of men and children running
over hay and green c<>mfodd< ron the bam
floor, do not improve it or render ti nv>re
palatable to a cow of nice taste, and if she
seems dainty,under such circumstance*,blame
yourself and not her. The waste and want
of economy in some barns from these and
other causes is of'en enormous. A really
good and judicious feeder of stock is rare—
Feeding is an art to be acquired by the moot
careful experience and observation, and few
attain proficiency in it.
PLOW.NG FOR SPRING WHEAT IN THE FALL, j
An old farmer in liiinots says that when he -
manures hi* land and plows it in the fad, lu
be sown to spring wheat, the crop :e never in- j
jured by the chtricn bug, and he gets a good i
crop every season.
