Geo. H. Shippy and F'd. Austin, prison
ers, the first, named from this county, es
caped from jail at Montrose, on Tuesday even- '
ing. A reward of 8100 is offered for their
apprehension. j
In Trouble.
White nigger-worshippers and "intelligent i
gentlemen ol African 'scent," are having some
sore troubles with the lively corpse of the
Democratic party, over which they lately
pronounced so many pa'hetic funeral ora
tions, It is a great pity that so much fine
(bituary talk has been wasted on a subject
that won't down at tfceir bidding.
job Printing.
We agaiu call the attention of citizens o
this county to our facilities for job printing.
With the presses and material now in our
office we are enabled to do work of all ktnds,
from the smallest label to the largest poater,
in the neatest and most woratn&nlike manner,
and at the shortest notice.
Send in your orders and try us.
An Omission.
By an oversight, the advertisement of Mi.
Chas. Harding's Meat Market was left out < t
our last issue. Mr. ll—has not omitted to
keep up his shop, bat is now taking esp?cia|
pains to gratify the tastes of h's customers by
keeping constantly on hand the best meats of
all kinds. Try them.
Pole Raisins.
There will be a Democratic jubilee and pole
raising at Townsend's Hotel in Falls, on Fri
day, Oct. 25th inst., at one o'clock P. M.—
Addresses will be made by Dr. S. M. Wheel
er. R. R. Little and Win. M Piatt, E-<jrs
All are invited to attend.
New Goods.
The most of our merchants are now receiv
ing new goods. The places where this fact
appears the most conspicuously,is at Bunnell
& Bannatyne's—at Mutt's—at Sherman &
Lathrop's, and at D. Billing's.
O. S. Mills & Co. have also just added to
their slock a large and full assortment o'
ILtrdware, Cutlery, &c. This, too, is the
place to get your Cooking and Parlor Stoves
Tinware, 4c.
Benzine.
There being no licensed bouses in this
county, since the late prohibitory law, for the
sale of spirituous and intoxicating liquors, o'
course, when people want to get up 8 flow of
" spirits," thej have to resort to Some other
article. Quitea number of chaps on Saturday
evening last had, from aj pearances, been ex
perimenting with bet zine or some other forty
rod fluid. Whatever the stuff used, the ex
periment was entirely successful. To make
a plain matter plainer, we might add that
several persons on the evening mentioned, got
moat galorioua drunk.
The New Jail.
The brick.work of the new jail is now fin
ished, and the stone work a'so, except the
cap-stones or coping of the yard wall. The
roof, which is to be of s'ate, will be put on
during the coming week. Mr. Place, the
contractor, has pushed forward the work with
commendable energy, and expects to have it
entirely finished before the close of the year
When finished, the building will be quite ots
namental, and, it is to be hoped, useful ; tho'
the necessity for it may be a matter of regret_
Got too High.
Yoat of the high-toned nigger equality or
gan at this p! ce, as we from the first antici
pated he might do, struck so high a key note
that in ass-cendmg the scale be got so lofty
that even the '• refined and intelligent" rads
here, now fail to see it—nrhear it either. One
of the " new and enlightened views" which he
promised to give the stupid Democrats in
these parts is now being given. It is a " dis
solving view" in which Y appears with
coat tail pointing towards the north pole and
his nose to the south—in the direction of Dr.
P. John's lean pantry—with a flea, which an
instrument of the strongest magnifying pow
ers, would fail to make larger sticking in one
ear, and the bewildering cry of his hungry
creditors ringing in the other.
I.et it Shine.
Dr. J. VY. Rhoads has fitted up our kero
sene lamps with new burners, and filled them
with a newly invented burning fluid which he
sells at forty five cents per gallon. It is
claimed that this new preparati >n is non
explosive—that it emits no smoke or unpleas
ant odor—that it is more economical, and
gives a better and clearer light than the oil
now in general use.
Our limited trial of it, enables us to eav
* J
that we have not yet been blown up by it,
that our lamp-chimneys have not yet been
smoked up by it—that no very stinky stink
comes from it—that our lamps when trimmed
and a burning give a pure, steady and
brilliant light—and that the expense to u,
thus far, has been— light.
Those wishing further information on this
eubjeet will call at the drug-store,
which, in the evening, will be found more or
less illuminated with the fluid which has
caused our ink to flow so freely.
The Weather.
The weather for a month past has been de
lightful. If th# Italians enjoy any balmier
air or bluer skies, we say, let thetn enjoy
them. We are content with the Pennsylva
nia October!. Some of the timid black rev
publicans, it seems, from what they say, got
alarmed about the probable condition of the
weather, (especially in the city of Philadel
phia.) and staid at home on the Bth to thresh
buckwheat, but the Democrats, trusting-in
Providence, turned out, thrashed the radical
rascals and God be praised, have bad abund
ant time to do their less important work.—-
The guilty rads know that they didn't de
serve even an hour of good weather. But,
while in the material world, ilcaven some
times smiles alike upon the just and the un
just. In the political world, the retributive
hand of justice, sooner or later, overtakes the
impious aad ungodly. In proof of this we
need only to imagine the dark skies and
gloomy prospects now flitting in all their
dreadful reality around the distempered brains
of the foolhardy fanatics, who have floated
their brief hour upon the wave of triumph
only to sink to a deeper, darker grave, with
out a hope of resurrection.
Base Hall.
A match game of base ball was played at
Factoryville on Thursday last, between the
! Tunkhannocks, of this place, and the Wyo
{ uiings, of Factoryville. The game, as wil,
be seen by (he annexed score, resulted in a
' decided victory for the Tunkhannocks. Quite
a large number of the citizens of Factoryville
and its surroundings were present and wit
nessed the game, with much apparent satis
faC'ion. --i
I The victors express themselves highly grat
ified with the very excellent sapper prepared
for the occasion, and the courteous treatment
received at the hands of the Wyomlngs. Not
the slightest difficulty or dispute occurred to
mar the good feeling and harmony which both
| clubs seemed anxious t<, preserve.
