farm Gar Wit &§utr|ifit, PESERVISG FI.OWERS A friend who has had experience in preserving flowers gives the following recipe : "Heat fine quartz sand in an iron, and stir in some stearic acid and spermaceti—in ihe proportion of half an oz of each to every five pounds of sand. Taken from the fire, the whole is well mixed and used as follows: A small box, with a drawer lid, with the bottom knocked out, is inverted, and a coarse piece of wire gauze placed inside, over the lid, which now forms the bottom. This seive is then covered with a layer of the prepared sand. The flowers properly thinned, are then placed on this sand, and completely im bedded in more of it, to keep them in position- The box, covered with paper, is then placed in a room or oven, id winch a temperature of 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit, in which they will soon be dried. Then the lid of the box is drawn, which causes the sand to fall out, eaving the dried" flowers on the gauze.— Should tbeflowerß have faded, they are touch", ed up with paint afterwards." Dons IN ORCHARDS. —A correspondent O the Richmond (Va.) Farmer says: "Several years ago wo had a fine young orchard which never bore at all for six or seven years. We supposed frost was the cause of their not bearing. At last it was convenient to fatten our hogs in the peach orchard, about six years ago, since which time the orchard has borne abundantly, every year except last year, when the frost killed the fruit. The cause of the barrenness was the flat white worms eating into the roots of the trees— these the hogs rooted out and destroyed." SAVING CABBAGES. —SeIect n dry rart of the garden— dig trenches of jsufficieut depth to re ceive the root and stocks up to the head—in to these trenches transplant the cabbages, heads up of course, till in the dirt carefully about them up to the heads, plant four posts, two of them being higher than the others to give a pitch to theroof nail shingling lath, or strips of old boards from on# post to the oth er. and another board half way up, lay upon this a number of bean poles, and upon these throw straw, cornfodder, protecting also the sides, and your keep in good condition until May. Where there is a fence, only two posts will be necessary, that beiug employed as the apex of the cover or roof. QUALITIES OF CATTLE. —Ayrshires for cheese, Devons tor butler, and Alderneys for cream. These, on the best native stock wil' improve. The improved Shot thorns combine these qualities to a large eictent, and are be sides, superior for beef. When we say the Alderneys, for cream, we mean the richest cream, not the most, as less milk is givt-D by them than by the Devons, and less butter made from a cow. For the farmer who has but few cows, the improved Shorthorns are the best, as they combine more the [J<>#d qualities. Excellent for milk, they are more so for beef.— Rural World. To PRESERVE CRAB APPLES Take off the stem and score them with a pen-knife,with out cutting them open. Weigh a pound of white sugar fur each pound of prepared fruit: put it over a moderate fire. When the sugar is all dissolved and hot, put the appein : let them boil gently until they are clear, then skim them out and place th.h pound of fruit. •<■ To GET RID OF FlCA. —When the flies set tic on the ceahng, as they usually do at night reduce the light in the room so you can just see them, and take a tumbler, or wider v s* sal, two thirds full of waim soap suds, and place it quickly over each group of flies, when thej' will fall into the suds. With a chair o' ; form to stand uoon you can soon clear a J whole room, entirely destroying the pests.— I have caught a piut of thtni tbus in a very few minutes. ROSEMARY WASH FOR THE IIAIR. Boil j one pound of rosemary in tw o quarts < f ter, filter it and add one ounce of spirits of lovender and a quarter of an ounce of Naples soap, salt of tarter, or borax. To DESTROY WARTS. — Dissolve as much washing soda as the water will take up, keep i it in a bottle, and touch the warts two or three times a day with a feather dipped in the solution, allowing it to dry on them ; or ap j ply lemon juice frequently during the day for a week or two. GINGER JI MBI.ES —Take one cup of but ! ter, two cups of sugar, one cup of molasses, one cup of cream, one teaspoonful of saleratos one tablespoonful of ginger, two eggs, and a glass of wine ; flour sufficient to roll them • out. WAFF.RS —Take seven eggs, one half pound of butter, one pound of sugai, one half j pound of currants, enough flour -to make as stiff as pound cake. TOMATO WlNK. —Take small ripe tomatoes pick off the s'eru, put the® in a basket or tub, wash cleanj then mssh well and strain through a linen Mr. (a bushel will make five gallons pure); then add two and a half to i three pounds of good brown sugar to each gallon, then put it into a cask, and let it fer ment as for raspberry wine. If two gallons of water be added to each bushel of toma* toes, the wine wilt be as good. Subscribe for the Democrat. ssiSf f ffiltS. jyiL LACK. A WEsTERN R B. Summer Arrangement—lß67.
