Advice to Democrats.
Thrash your buckwheat before the day of election,
and then turn out en masse and thrash the Black
Republicans,
arrivals.
il,.n. Asa Packer, Col. C. F. Wells, W. W. Long
s rath and Col. V. E. Piollet, Officers and Directors
of the Rail, Road, now being built here, with Robert
H. Sayre and Fred. Mercur, Engineers are now in
town. These gentlemen are mahing a tour of in
spection, and fixing the location of read at some
heretofore unsettled points, They are on the way
up the liae.
Going Up,
The work on the two churches in town begins to
show up to good advantages. Mr. Ove'rfield is now
fairing the frame work of the Methodist bouse. The
brick work of the Presbyterian has the appearance
of being nearly finishsd.
Salt
Mr. D. Billings has received at his store
near the canal, a large consignment of salt,
which will be sold in large or small quanti
ties to suit purchasers and at prices to
suit purchasers. Mr. Billings keeps con
s'antlv.on hand a fine stock of provisions and
family Groceries. Housekeepers, and others
who live on victuals, will do well to make a
note of this.
Loaded up.
The editor of the Republican, who it seems
rather "overdid" himself, went back to Dr.
P. John, his fountain head for arnunition, and
has returned, no doubt loaded to the muzzle.
Look out for some of Dr. John's stale lies m
a new garb. The Dr. manufactures and Yost
peddles. During the Dr.'s short term as
lie Venue Assessor, he got a perpetual Lie
cense, for dispensing "new and enlightened
views" among us old fogies.
Are you Assessed t
The Assessor's Lists of voters are now put
up in the respective election districts. Every
Democrat should see to it at once, that all
new comers, who will vote our ticket, are as
sessed. Do not neglect this matter. It will
be two late, if not attended to this week.—
Every vote is important. With a full vote,
success iu the State and County is certain
Look to the Lists.
Just Received.
Sherman & Lathrop have just received a
large stock of new dress goods, Trimmings,
Cloaking, Ladies and Children's Shoes, ic,.
to which they call the attention of the Ladies
with the'utmost confidence in their ability to
please them as to style, quality and price.—
Au extensive stock of ready-made clothing,
made expressly for this market at a tirst class
New York House—is now being received.
Their stock of Gents' furnishing Goods is
now complete. Trunks, Yalieces, Leather aud
Carpet traveling bag*, Ac., on tiaud.
Call and see them.
Law* ot 180 T.
The Pamphlet Laws for 18G7 have been re
ceived by E. J. Keeney. Prothonotary and
are now ready for distribution to those en
titled to them. Justices of the Peace will
send in their orders tor them. This document
is said to contain some queer laws, applicable
to the citizens ot Wyoming County. Our
black republican law makers uf last winter
were all great men—especially the one from
thia County, who, besides making laws, made
some singular prayers—so they say.
Fixed up.
The trunk of the aqu aducr, across the
creek at this place, was discovered, one day
last Week, to be giving away. A belli was
framed, placed under the weak point, which,
II is hoped, will secure it against danger
of breaking down for the season. A
aenou* break in th 2 canal at this season wu'd
be a calamity to the country.
Ride W all.
Mr. T. B. Wall, owner of the premises, has
pot down tn front of the store occupied by
Sherman A Laihrop, the finest piece of side
-walk to be found in the country.—indeed it
ia not excelled in the cities. The flagging for
ifor this work came Irotn the splendid quarries
• ©vet-field A Co., at Meshoppen, in this
County. These qua'ries which have been
but recently worked, arejustly regarded as
•the finest in the country. Mr. Wall who
never does any thing by the halves, contem
plates farther improvements in the way of
walks and step stones.
■Borough Bridge
The Bridge at the lower end of town near
Marcy's, which has been not only a disgrace,
but a constant source of expense to the Boro.
.for time whereof the memory of man runneth
.not to the contrary, is likely to be put in a
condition which will ensure its permanence
and durability. Marcy, who has the contract
for its building, has laid the foundations, deep
and strong and seems to be intent upon doing
the work in the most substantial manner.—
"When built, if done according to contract,
we believe it will be, not only safo and sub
atantial, but decidedly ornamental.
Arrested.
Geo, H.Shippey, who is charged with steal
ing the horse of Mr. James Harris—4 flo .
tice of which appeared in the Democrat of
last week, was arrested by F. M. Crane and
John Wilsey of this place, at Wilkes Barre.
yesterday, and brought here for a hearing
The proofs of guilt are said to be conclusve.
No effort has yet been made to recover the
horse ; but it is known in which direction j
it was taken aud but little doubt of its recov
ery is entertained. Shippey, who it seems
has a propensity for stealing, had but a few
weeks since finished up a term in the pen
itentiary for Larceny. He will probably
have the benefit of a longer term for fur- j
cber reformation.
Bams Burned.
The two large barns, with the extensive
he<ls and stabling, attached, belonging <•
Mr. Perry Marcy at the lower end of t WIJ,
were, with their coDtents, entirely destroyed
bv fire on MouJay evening last. The tire,
which is thought to have been the work of
an incendiary, when first discovered was on
the north end of the buildings, fartherest
rorn the house, and appeared to have been
u recently kindled. Mr. Oscar Good win,
who first saw it ami gave the alarm, thinks
s beard a person running from the premises,
Mr.farcy with rare presence of mind was
enabled to take his horses fron. the stables.
Everything else connected w-th the barns
and sheda was lost. Both barns were well
ailed with gram and hay One with a large
quantity 0 f wheat yet in the sheaf.
Mr. Marcy's loss probably exceeds §2OOO.

Our New Gordon Jobber.
The swapgeriog sense of satisfaction and
sell-importance which a boy feels on first fob
bing his longcoveted bulls*eye ''time keeper,"
and the waving dignity which a young Miss,
on the sweeter side of oweet sixteen, feels
when her watchful Ma, first allows her to
hang a long skirt to her latest calico, is akin
to the pleasure we feel in speaking of our
new Gordon Jobber. We're proud. We're
a little stuck-up. We begin to think we're
a—mammoth pumpkin—(our pocket-book
though, !eel, and looks very squashy) —No
matter, we've got the press. A new Gordon
Jobber—the first e*er brought into this Co.
with which we are prepared to do the neatest
and tnost expeditious work in our line, ever
done in this region. It is a most perfect and
admirable piece of machinery. Mr. Geo. P.
Gordon the Inventor, Patentee and Manufac
turer of the Gordon Presses, is one of the
very few men of real genius in this or any
other age who has lived to secure the rewards
of his genius. Though receiving a snug for
tune, annually, for his presses, Mr. Gordon's
mind is in no danger of rusting out,nor be*
coming dulled by satiety. Knowing that he
had a ''good thing," he is not content to
sit down under the hallucination tbat it
could not be made better. He has spent
mind and money in making, irom time to
time, new and important changes in his
presses, until now, it would seem, the ne
plus ultra of perfection has been attained.—
Perhaps Ac may still improve them, but oth
er men need hardly attempt the task. Call
and see our new Jobber, and bring along your
job work, such as envelopes, bill heads, let
ter heads, posters and blank work of every
description.

Messrs. THOS. AI.LCOCI: A Co —Please send, with
dispatch, twelve dozen Allcoed's Porous Plasters
Our daily experience conGrms their very superior
excellence. At this moment of writing a man ap
plies for one, who, by, entanglement in the shfat of
machinery, had both his legs broken, spine severely
injured, and was for nearly a year entirely helpless.
This man found relief very soon by the application
of a plastei to his spine. He was soon enabled to
work, and now he labors as welt as ever. He would
cheerfully pay S3 for a single Plaster it they could
not be had at a lower rate: lam surprised that
surgeons do not make usa of tbe perforated plasters
to the exclusions of all othe s. as their flexibility and
and adhesiveness are greatly in advance of all other
plasters with which lam acquainted ; while the
perforations peculiar to them rendered them greatly
superior to all others for ordinary surgical uses -
Knowing the pilasters to lie so useful, I havo no
scruples that my sentiments should be known.

Dr, SCIBMCK'S PULMONIC II STRUP
Tbis great medicine cured Dr. J H. SOIENCK, the
Proprietor, of Pulmonary Consumption, when it h;id
assumed its most formidable aspect .and when speedy
death appeared to be inevitable. His physicians
pronounc -d his case incurable, when he commenced
the use of this simple hut powerful remedy. His
health was restored in a very short time, and no re
turn of the disease has been apprehended, for all the
symptoms quickly disappeared, and his present
weight is more than two hundred pounds.
Since his recovery, he has devoted his attention
exclusively to the euro of Consumption, ami the dis
eases which are usually complicated with it, and the
cures effected by his medicines have been very nu
merous and truly wonderful. Dr. SCHKNCK makes
professional visits to several of the larger eitie
weekly, where he has a large concourse of patients,
and it is truly astonishing to see poor conusmptives
that have to be lifted out of their carriages, and in

SIGNIFICANTS
The Dew system ot Advertising adopted by
i Geo. P. Rowell Sc. Co., Advertising Agents,
j No. 40 Park Row, New York, is attracting a
good deal of attention.
The following extract from a speech deliv
ered before the N. Y. State Editorial Conven
tion, (lately holden at Penn Yan,)by a prom
inent Advertising Agent of N. Y. city, goes
to show that he at least acknowledges its
advantages.
From JameMovrt, N. Y. Journal of Aug 2nd
Edited by C. E. BISHOP, Chairman of
Committee on ADVERTISING AGENCIES.
"Mr. Petliogill spoke in opposition to that
plan from the publisher's stand point alone.
He showed the publishers that by this system
|of contracting they were giving lower rates
than they gave their own home customers or
| others equally as prompt and good customers;
that thev were selling one portion of their
paper to be used to compete with and under--
bid the other columns ; that the owner of the
space thus sold could come right, in and beat
the publisher's prices aed take his business
away from him ; that if the publishers, lully
understanding this, still wish to continue
so irregular and business like a system he
(Pettingill & Co.) should of cotirse cease try
mg to get advertising for the papers at their
regular rates and go into the other system of
contracting—which he could stand if the
printers could."
The anxiety on the account, of newspapers
is uncalled for. There is not one in twenty
which would not prefer to receive all their
foreign patronage on this plan, when it is
fully understood. It is too generally recog
nized as thoroughly beneficial to all parties
concerned to be injured in the least by any
thing which may be said against it by inter
ested parties.
Advertiser* should send for a circular giv
ing full explanations.

'■Some of these exercises are specially beautiful
as well as useful, a mingling of the dulre et utile
which secures the interest as well as the improve
ment of the student. The various sty leg levc'opcd
in these exercises reader them invaluable in an edu
cational point of view, as they tend to enlarge the
intelligence and the appreciation, and at the same
time form the taste of the pupil. They must bo
studied carefully with reference to the innumerable
marks of expression and forms of ornamentation.—
Upon the minute accuracy with which these are ac
complished dopends the actual sterling advancement
of the pupil; any evasion or slurring in these re
spects is time and effort utterly wasted, while, on
the other hand, a close and patient.investigation, and
a minutely and faithful execution of them will give

student the means and resources by which great

RAIL RAD CO.
! 7EEIE PEES7 MOETGAGE
BO.YDS J
As an Investment.
The rapid progress of the Union Pacific Railroad
i now building west from Omaha, Nebraska, and for- (
rningt with its western c mnecti >ns, an unbroken line i
i across the continent, attracts attention to the value 1
of the First Mortgage Bonds which the Company
now offer to the public. The first question asked by ,
prudent investors is, "Are these bonds secure I"
Next, "are they a profitable investment ?" to reply
in brief;
Ist. The early completion of the whole great line
to the Pacific is as certain as any future business
eventjean be. The Government grant of over twen
ty million acres of land and fifty million dollars in (
its own bonds practically guarantees it. One fourth i
of the work is already done, and the trsck continues j
to be laid at the rate of two tniles a day.
; 2d. The Union Pacific Railroad bonds are issned j
upon what promises to be one of the most profitable i
lines of railroad in the country. For many years it ,
must be the only line connecting the Atlantic and
Pacific; and being without competition, it can main
tain remunerative rates,
3d 425 miles of this rond arc finished, and fully
equipped with depots, locomotives, cars, Aj., and
two trains are daily running each way. The materi
als for the .emaining 131 miles to the eastern base
of the Rocky Mountains are on hand, and it is under 1
contract to be done in beptember.
4th The net earnings of the sections already fin
ished are scrcral limes greater than the gold inter
est upon the First Mortgage Bonis upon snch sec
tions, and if not another mile of the road were built
the part already completed would not only pay in
terest and expenses, but be profitable to the Com
pany.
sth. The Union Pacific Railroad bands can be is
ued only as the road progresses, and therefore can
never be in the market unless they represent a bona '
Jide propertv.
6th. Their amount is is strictly limited by law to \
a sum equal to what is granted by the U. S. Gov- j
eminent, and for whi hit takes a second lien as its |
security. This amount upon the first 517 ici.ce west
from Amaha is only 816.900 per mile.
7th The fact that the U. 5. Government consid
ers a second lien upon the road a good investment,
and that sonic of the shrewdest rai'road builders of
the country have alread- paid in five million dol
lars u|*>n the stock (which is to them a third lien),
may well Inspire confidence in a first lien
Bth. Although it is uot claimed that there can be i
iry better eei unties that Governments, there are j
parties who consider a first mortgage upon such a ;
property as this the very best security in the world,
and who sell their Governments to re-invest in these
bonds—thus securing a greater interest.
9th. As the Union Pacific Railroad bands are offer
ed for the present at 90 cents on the dollar and ac
crued interest, they are the cheapest security in the
market, being over 15 per cent, less than U. S.
Stocks
10th, At the current rate of of premium on gold, |
they pay I
Over .Vine per Cent. Interest.
