The work on the two churches in town begins to
show up to good advantages. Mr. Ove'rfield is now
fairing the frame work of the Methodist bouse. The
brick work of the Presbyterian has the appearance
of being nearly finishsd.
Salt
Mr. D. Billings has received at his store
near the canal, a large consignment of salt,
which will be sold in large or small quanti
ties to suit purchasers and at prices to
suit purchasers. Mr. Billings keeps con
s'antlv.on hand a fine stock of provisions and
family Groceries. Housekeepers, and others
who live on victuals, will do well to make a
note of this.
Loaded up.
The editor of the Republican, who it seems
rather "overdid" himself, went back to Dr.
P. John, his fountain head for arnunition, and
has returned, no doubt loaded to the muzzle.
Look out for some of Dr. John's stale lies m
a new garb. The Dr. manufactures and Yost
peddles. During the Dr.'s short term as
lie Venue Assessor, he got a perpetual Lie
cense, for dispensing "new and enlightened
views" among us old fogies.

up in the respective election districts. Every
Democrat should see to it at once, that all
new comers, who will vote our ticket, are as
sessed. Do not neglect this matter. It will
be two late, if not attended to this week.—

ceived by E. J. Keeney. Prothonotary and
are now ready for distribution to those en
titled to them. Justices of the Peace will
send in their orders tor them. This document
is said to contain some queer laws, applicable
to the citizens ot Wyoming County. Our
black republican law makers uf last winter
were all great men—especially the one from
thia County, who, besides making laws, made
some singular prayers—so they say.
Fixed up.
The trunk of the aqu aducr, across the
creek at this place, was discovered, one day
last Week, to be giving away. A belli was
framed, placed under the weak point, which,
II is hoped, will secure it against danger
of breaking down for the season. A

Mr. T. B. Wall, owner of the premises,has

but recently worked, arejustly regarded as

never does any thing by the halves, contem
plates farther improvements in the way of

The Bridge at the lower end of town near
Marcy's, which has been not only a disgrace,
but a constant source of expense to the Boro.

and durability. Marcy, who has the contract
for its building, has laid the foundations,deep
and strong and seems to be intent upon doing
the work in the most substantial manner.—

Geo, H.Shippey, who is charged with steal

No effort has yet been made to recover the
horse ; but it is known in which direction j
it was taken aud but little doubt of its recov
ery is entertained. Shippey, who it seems
has a propensity for stealing, had but a few

itentiary for Larceny. He will probably
have the benefit of a longer term for fur- j
cber reformation.
Bams Burned.
The two large barns, with the extensive
he<ls and stabling, attached, belonging <•
Mr. Perry Marcy at the lower end of t WIJ,
were, with their coDtents, entirely destroyed
bv fire on MouJay evening last. The tire,
which is thought to have been the work of
an incendiary, when first discovered was on
the north end of the buildings, fartherest
rorn the house, and appeared to have been
u recently kindled. Mr. Oscar Good win,
who first saw it ami gave the alarm, thinks
s beard a person running from the premises,
Mr.farcy with rare presence of mind was
enabled to take his horses fron. the stables.
Everything else connected w-th the barns
and sheda was lost. Both barns were well
ailed with gram and hay One with a large
quantity 0 f wheat yet in the sheaf.
Mr. Marcy's loss probably exceeds §2OOO.

The anxiety on the account, of newspapers
is uncalled for. There is not one in twenty

ested parties.

As an Investment.
The rapid progress of the Union Pacific Railroad
i now building west from Omaha, Nebraska, and for- (
rningt with its western c mnecti >ns, an unbroken line i
i across the continent, attracts attention to the value 1
of the First Mortgage Bonds which the Company
now offer to the public. The first question asked by ,
prudent investors is, "Are these bonds secure I"
Next, "are they a profitable investment ?" to reply
in brief;
Ist. The early completion of the whole great line
to the Pacific is as certain as any future business
eventjean be. The Government grant of over twen
ty million acres of land and fifty million dollars in (
its own bonds practically guarantees it. One fourth i
of the work is already done, and the trsck continues j
to be laid at the rate of two tniles a day.
; 2d. The Union Pacific Railroad bonds are issned j
upon what promises to be one of the most profitable i
lines of railroad in the country. For many years it ,
must be the only line connecting the Atlantic and
Pacific; and being without competition, it can main
tain remunerative rates,
3d 425 miles of this rond arc finished, and fully
equipped with depots, locomotives, cars, Aj., and
two trains are daily running each way. The materi
als for the .emaining 131 miles to the eastern base
of the Rocky Mountains are on hand, and it is under 1
contract to be done in beptember.
4th The net earnings of the sections already fin
ished are scrcral limes greater than the gold inter
est upon the First Mortgage Bonis upon snch sec
tions, and if not another mile of the road were built
the part already completed would not only pay in
terest and expenses, but be profitable to the Com
pany.

parties who consider a first mortgage upon such a ;

and who sell their Governments to re-invest in these
bonds—thus securing a greater interest.
9th. As the Union Pacific Railroad bands are offer
ed for the present at 90 cents on the dollar and ac
crued interest, they are the cheapest security in the
market, being over 15 per cent, less than U. S.
