FRUIT AS A MEDICINE.
Ripe fruit is the medicine of nature. Noth
ing could be more wholesome for man or
child ; and although green fruit is, ot course
almost as fatal as so much poison, the ripe is
fully as thorough a health restorative and
health preserver. Strawberries are a favorite
with all classes and constitute a popular lux
ury. But who cao compute the amount ol
general health promoted by this relish for
Strawberries? Who ran imagine how many
pills that relish throws out. of the market ?-
or, in other words, to what exteot these pills
pndared by Mother Nature, and sngar-coa'-
ed,as it were, to render them more palatable,
crowd out of use those prepared by the chem
ist and the apothecary ?
Who can tell the number of disordered
livers, deranged stomachs, and rBl eted di
gestive apparatus generally, the grateful acid
of that delicious food gradually restores to
sound condition, mocking at all the skill ol
the ablest physician, vindicat ng the simple
laws of Hygeia by their radical action, and
teach ng us how often a pannacae for some
of the most painful of human tnaladtes lies
directly at r.ur feet, and is condemned because
it is so unassuming ? After strawberries ;
we do h< mage especially to peaches and ap
ples. They are the kind ol dru s that cost
comparatively little and do comparatively
much, when ihe patient is not 100 far gone
for tne use of such uieiiiramtr.ls.
We knew a person once, who believing
himself in a decline, and having been com
pletely wont out in patience by the experi
ments of his doctors determined to eat from
four to six apples evety day and note the re
sult. In '.hree months he was well ! We
knew of another who, with, ut being afflicted
with any particular disorder, was never tn
gocd health, and for twenty-five years could
scarcely be said to et joy a single week's ex
emption from stiffinrg. He then commenced
the habit of drinking a glass of plain cider
every morning, and for the next twenty five
years never had a single day's illness. Such
remedies are simple enough !
To PRF.VENT CATTLE FROM JUMPING FEN ]
CES —The following singular statement was
made at a late meeting of ihe Ami rican lus ,
titote Fatniera' Club at New York :
•'To prevent steers from jumping fences
clip off tlie eye lashes of the under lids, with j
a pair of cissors, end the ability or disposition |
to jump i* as eflectually destroyed Samp
son's power was by the loss of his locks. The
animal will not attempt a fence until the!h
es are grown again. Of this we are informed
by Samuel Thorn, the greater breeder ot
dutchess country county, who as-ured os
that he had testid it upon a p-ir of breechy
oxen. As it was of great value to bun, be
hopes it will be tried by others.
To MAEE A STACK SETTLE TRUE.— There
are two things to do this; keeping the center
up ; pitching on from all sid;s. This will
make the stack settle evenly. Pitching on
two aides will balance it ; but it is not good
as it does not make it evenly solid all round
but leaves some parti, lower, where the water
is apt to settle. By keeping the stack high
in the center, ss it is built up and sloping
outward, the rain will be unable to pene
trate, as, like a roof, wards it off. Keep high
in the middletrom bottom to top; aud pitch
on all sides to make equally solid.
GREEN TOMATO PICKLES. -Cut in slices
one peck of green tomatoes, about one hao
an inch in thickness salt them and let thei
lie twenty-four hours. Then drsio and pie**
dry with a towel. Cut six large onions into
thin rings. Take one-quarwr pound tnustaid
flour, one-quarter p >un i English mu*tar.l
aeed, black pepper, on? ounce allspice, one
ounce cloves, half ounce gri und ginger, mix
spices. Put a layer of onions, tomatoes, and
spices alternately Into the k ttle, c >ver with
good vinegar and boil til! e'ear This make*
an excellent pickle which all ladies will ad
mire. — Germantovn Telegraph.
To PROTECT SHEF.P FROM BOG*. —lf sheep
are keep in the same lot with cow* or fat
cattle, DO dog will disturb them. As soop
as the dog* approach the sheep they run to
the cattle, who drive off the dg*. A farmer
for thirty tears in Shelby co., bv adopting
this plan, never lost a shtephv dogs, al'ho'
io the same night s me dog* killed sheep on
tha farm north and south of biro.— Rural
Gentleman.
John Johnson writes to the American Far
mer that sheep fatten more rapidly in Octo
ber aDd November,lf they have fltst rate pas
ture, than at any other ,eann of the year.—
In fattening sheep during tl., winter, it ia of
special importance that they he in good con
dition befire being put on their winter feed
F To CCRE WARTS ON CATTLE. A correspor
dent of the Ma'n Farmer cured warts upon a
oows teat, bv a few application* of spirits n
turpentine. In a few weeks the warts a!f
disappeared, and she was never troubled af
tenrards.
The only fruit which grows in every cli
mate is the strawberry. It is the only fruit
which somewhere on the earth is picked
every flay the Tear round.
