Pol© Haimng at Tioga.
PniBND Cobb> Dbab Sir: Saturday evening we
had a little ovation hero in the shape of a “pole
raising/*
Tho “ PHlsbury Democracy*' bad raised a diminu
tive hickory,' at the time of tho great Democratic
rally, at which there were twenty-nino “heroic men”
assembled to listen to that same Pillsbnry, who, by
the way, is said by one of his apostles in this Boro
to be “an escaped Rebel prisoner.”' .This “Jack
son pole,” as they call it, is a clore adjunct of the
Hotel of Mr. J. H. Wells ; so that it become necessa
ry for Mr. Farr to declare bis position. .Ilenco ho
caused a Lincoln pole to be raised nest bis hotel,
Saturday evening. It is a very beautiful polo, bear
ing the names of Abraham Lincoln and Andy John
son, as a lit rebuke to the Sham Democracy of “Lit
tle Mack, the Unready.”
It so happened that our friend', Geo. M. DcPui,
Esq., of Williamsport,-ivas here upon a short visit to
hia native place, and he consented to address the
meeting. The whole affair was entirely impromptu,
and a complete success. Young America was out in
fulb strength, and the boys listened to the speech
with close attention and great satisfaction. It is a
good sign to see tho young of the land thus- early
evincing such interest in tho cause of their country :
When Ibose who now control the affairs of the coun
try shall havo passed away, they may rest assured
that these young and intelligent Americans will not
surrender their birth-right to the enemies of Free
Government! The speech gave entire aatisfaciion
and tho ponple of this vicinity are proud to find so.
able an advocate of their principles in the person of i
a native of our own village. TiodA. j

THE SECRETARY OP THE TREASURY gives
notice that subscriptions will be received for
Coupon Treasury Notes, payable three years from
August 15, 1864, with semi-annual-interest at the
rate of 7*3loths percent, per annum, —principal and
interest both to be paid in lawful money.
These notes will be convertible at the option of tho
holder at maturity, into six per cent, gold bearing
bonds, payable not less than five noY more than twen
ty years from their date, as the Government may
elect. They will be issued in denominations of $6O/
$lOO, $5OO, $l,OOO and $5,000, and all subscriptions
must be for fifty dollars or some multiple of fifty dol
lars.
The notes will be transmitted to the owners free of
transportation charges as epon after tho receipt of the
original Certificates of Depbsit as they cab be prepar
ed, ‘
As the notes draw interest from August 15, persons
making deposits subsequent to that date must pay the
interest accrued from date of note.to date pf deposit.
Parties depositing $25,000- or upward for these
notes at any one time will he allowed a commission
of ono-quarter of,oneper cent, which will be paidVy
theJTjeasury Department upon receipt of biU foc tjie
amount, certified to by the officer with whom the de*
posit was made. <Ko deductions for commission*
must be made from deposits. -
Special Advantages of tills Loan.
It is a National Savings BarJ:, offering a higher
rate of interest other, and the*hest security;
Any Savings Bank whiclr pays its depositors in U. S.
Notes, considers that it is paying in the best circula
ting medium of the country, and it cannot pay in any
thing better, for its own assets are either in govern
ment securities or in notes or bonds payable in gov-
eminent paper.
It is equally convenient as a permanent or tempo*
rarj investment The notes can always be sold for
within a fraction of their face and aconmnlated inter
est, and are the best security with banks as collater
als for discounts.
Convertible into a 6 per .cent 5-20 Gold
Band.
In addition to the .ray liberal interest on the notes
for three years, this privilege of conversion is now
worth about three per cent psr„annum, for the cur
aent rate for 5-20 Bonds is not less than nfne per cent .
premium , and before the war the premium on United
States stocks was over twenty per cent. It will be
seen that the actual profit on this loan, at the present
market rate, is not less than ten per cent per annum.
Exempt from Stale or municipal
Taxation.
Bat aside from all the advantages ire bare enumer
ated; a special Act of Congress exempt! all Treasury
notes and hands from local taxation. On the average,
this exemption is worth abont two per cent per an
num, according to the rate of taxation in various
parts of the country.
It is believed that no securities offer so great induce
ments to lenders as those issued by the government.
In all other forms of indebtedness, the faith or ability
of private parties, or stock companies, or separate
communities,-only, is pledged for payment, while the
whole property of the country is held to secure the
discharge of all the obligations of the United States.
While the government offers the mest liberal terms
for its loans, it believes' that the very strongest appeal
will be to the loyally and patriotism of the people.
Duplicate certificates will be issued for all deposits.
Tbe party depositing must endorse upon the original
certificate me denomination or notes required, and
whether they are to be issued in blank or payable to
order. When so endorsed it must be left with the of
ficer receiving the deposit, to be forwarded to the
Treasury Department.
Subscriptions will be received by the Treasurer of
the United States, at Washington, the several Assist
ant Treasurers and designated Depositaries, and by
the FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF TOWANDA,
and by all National Banks which are depositaries of
public money, and ALL RESPECTABLE BANKS
and BANKERS throughout the country will give far

£ hi « de !£ b !?- * * * * I have known
Hoofiand’s German Bitters favorably for a number of years.
I bare used them In my own family, and bare been so
pleased with their effect* that I was induced to recommend
them to many others, and know that they have operated la
a strikingly beneficial manner. I take great pleasure ia
thus puMicly proclaiming this fact, and calling the attentica
of those afflicted with the diseases for which they are recom
mended,'to these Bitters, knowing from experience that my
recommendation will be sustained. Ido this more cheer
fully as ffoofland’s Bitters is intended to benefit the afflicted,
and is *• not a rum drink ” Yonrs truly.

Although not disposed to tavor or recommend Patent lied
icines in general, thr< ugh distrust of their ingredient! and
effects,! yet know of no sufficient reasons wbramas may
not testify to the benefits he believes himself to have re
ceived from any simple preparation, in the hope that he may
thus contribute to the benefit of Others.
I do this the more readily in regard to Hooflands German
Bitters, prepared by Dr.C. M. Jadcson. of this city, becanse
I was prejudiced against them for many years, under the
impression that they were chiefy an alcoholic mixture I
am indebted to roy friend Shoemaker, Esq., for the
removal of this prejudice by proper tests, and for encour
agement to try them, when suffering from great and long
continued debility. The use of three bottles of these Bit
ters, at the beginning of the present year, was followed
J>y evident relief, and restoration to a degree of bodily and
mental vigor which I had not felt for six months before, and
had almost despaired of regaining.. I therefere thank God
and my friend for directing me to the use of them

Dr. Jackson Dear Sir: —l have been frequently request
ed to connect my name with commendations of different
kinds ol medicines but regarding the practice as out of my
appropriate sphere, I have in all cases declined; but with a
clear proof In various instances.and particularly In my fam
ily, of the usefulness of Dr. Hocfland’s German Bitters, I
depart for once from my usual course, to express my fhll
conviction that, for general debility of the system and espe
cially for liver Complaint, it is a safe and valuable prepara
tion. In some cases it may fail; but usually,! doubt not,
it will be very beneficial to those who suffer from the above
cause. Yours, very respectfully, J. B. KENNARD,

Dr. C.M. Jackson; —Dear Sir;—l feel It a pleasure thus,
of my own accord, to bear testimony to the excellence of the
German Bitten. Some years since being much afflicted with
Dyspepsia, 1 used them with very beneficial results. 2 have
often recommended them to persona enfeebled by that tor
menting disease, and havo beard from them the most flat
