A Practical Joke,—ln a western State one
of the political parlies had for twenty years
been in the habit of holding their nominating
convention at the house of Mr. G .
He happened on a recent occation, for the first
time, to be in when they had finished their
business, and hear a little delegate move that
“this Convention adjourn Sine die.”
“Sine die l”said Mr. G—■ to a person stan
ding by, “wher’s that ?”
“Why, that's away in the northern part of
ibe county/’ said the neighbor.
“Hold on, if you please, Mr. Chairman hold
on,” said the landlord, with great emphasis
•*od earnestness, “hold on, sir; I ; d like to bs
beard on that question. I have kept a public
house now for more than twenty years, and am
a poor man. I have always belonged to the
party, and never split in my life. This is the
most central location in the county, and its
whare we’ve,always met. Iv’e never had nor
asked for an! office, and have worked day and
night for the party, and now I think sir, it is
contemptible to go and adjourn this Convention

That landlord must have been one of the
bright lights of the Democracy.
Old} Senator Clarke of llhode Island, speak

Dr. Ga in, and others upon tlrfe Treasury of the
United States, used the homely figure that that
Commonwealth reminded ’him\of a cross bady

The following is aunt Betsy’s description of
her milkman ; “He is the meanest man in the
world,’’.she exclaimed.—“He skims his milk
on the top, and then he turns it over and skims
it on the bottom.
A printer’s apprentice says that at the office
they charge him with all the pi they do find,
and at the house they charge him with all they
don’t find. He does not understand that kind
of logic I
A queer genius being asked why he did not
attend the funeral of his wife, replied, "That he
could not leave his shop, and that it was better
to attend to business before pleasure.” •

ANOTHER TRIUMPH!
PnILADEIiI-HIA, Sopt. 29, ISO 9,
To the President of the Penmylruma Agricultural
Society .—The subscribers, your committee to examine
the contents of a Salamander Safe of Evans & Watson,
after being exposed to a strong Are on the Fair Grounds
for eight hours, respectfully represent
That after- seven cords of oak wood and three of
pine had been consumed around the Safe, it was open
ed in the presence‘of the committee, and the contents
token out, a little warmed, but not even scorched.
Several Silver Medals beretofbre reoeived by the
manufacturers, and a largo quantity of documents
were in the Safe, and camo trfit enciroly uninsured.
The experiment satisfied ns of the capacity of Safes
of this kind to protect contents from any fire to which
they may be exposed.

and Watson, Philadelphia.
Gentlemen: The Saiamandcr Fire-Proof Safe of
vour manufacture, purchased by us from your Agent,
Ferris & Garrett, of olir city, some nine months ago,
was severely tried by burglars last Saturday night,
and although they had a sledge hammer, cold chisels,
drill, and gunpowder, they did not succeed in opening
the Safe. The lock being one of Halls Patent Pow
der-proof,** they could not get the powder into it. but
drilled a hole in the lower panel and forced in a large
charge, which was ignited, and although the door, in
side and out, showed the explosion not to have been a
.small one, it was not forced suppose they
were the greater part of the night at "W e

K.vox vjli.e, Tknesski:. March 13th, ISs9.—Messrs.
Evans <fc Watson, Philadelphia;
Gcntkmen : It affords me great pleasure to say to
you that the Salamander Safe, which I pundia?ed of
you in February, 185« S, proved to he what you recom
mended it—a sure protection from fire. My store
house together with several others, was burned to the
ground in March last. The Sale fell through into the
cellar, and was exposed to intense boat tor six or
eight hours, and when it was taken from the ruins and
opened, all its contents were found to bo in a perfect
state, tho books and papers not being injured in the
least. I can cheerfully recommend your Safe* to the
community, believing as 1 do. that they are n? near
fire-proof as it is possible for anv Safe to be made.
